Games for those who want an 'open' space game

  • Many of you love Elite, Freelancer, Starlancer, and other similar games.
M$ more then likely won't release the source code to Freelancer, so we are left to find alternatives, and damn are there good ones.

Several games here, an indie developer, and just look at those graphics! =O
Some reviews/info of some of the more highly rated open-source space games
Also for those who love combat and teamwork, there's the open-source version of Allegiance

    Enjoy!

  • even though you're advertising and that's frowned upon, unless it's something you've created yourself, many of those actually look rather good.

  • Taw, you have any left over kegs of Ginger Beer?
I think I'm in need of a serious hangover.

  • <yeeccchhh> I don' have non' o 'dat filthy stuff, fella! You need to go to he_who_hops for that, because it is a forbidden substance in Tawakalnistan apart from at Eastertime and that's just for the kids.

  • ah. I thought perhaps you might have some of that
contraband that you really wouldn't want.
Ok, I'm cool with that my towel hooded friend.

  • GB would just make you feel worse. You need some of Dr Taw's Traditional Heals All Medicinal Compound, only £9-99 a bottle, guaranteed to make you feel better for as long as it takes me to shove your money in my pocket and run off round the corner :)

  • Ahh, just stick with an icey cold Coke. Good for what ever ales you ;)

  • You guys REALLY must be bored.

1 - This is OT section. If 'advertising' isn't allowed here, I didn't get to see it when reading through the rules, so someone can quote that part and link to it as well, kthx.

2 - The games linked to were all either open source (not owned by anyone) and thereby exempt from 'advertising' clauses (in the most arbitrary sense) or freeware. That indie artist that I linked to actually put three very awesome games of his for free that are very similar to FreeLancer. I didn't realize 'advertising' freeware was prohibited. Its not as if I put any referral crap or receive any benefit whatsoever from that guy, he just makes some damn good games.

3 - Now I know why this board is so vacant.

  • Dw, chill out. The "No advertising", is to stop spammers and trolls from creating an account for the sole purpose of advertising another site here. If it's something you wish to share with us, its fine, but make it a discussable topic as it were. point out the points of the game(s) you liked and why.

Watch out for Taw though, he has too much sand in his mind these days ;)

  • Sez you you old buzzard.

    to stop spammers

which never stopped you and your blather, rather than my wise, brilliant, and well-considered sayings which have now been collected together and made available in printed form to the general public outside of Tawakalnistan, as "The Book of the Mullah" £9-99 from all good bookshops or Direct from Taw Towers Publishers (a division of Indycorp)

Calm down DW, I wasn't having a go, you just needed to expand a little more as to why you were posting those links. You prob' aren't aware that in the past we've had loads of problems with people making accounts just to advertise some game or other, open source or not, and we're not a free advertising site for third parties. If you genuinely want to share something, that's fine - you'll note that I did actually follow the links and say that i thought the games were pretty good.

No need to get nasty either :) Nobody has been nasty to you. Manners cost nothing, after all.

  • I'm actually researching (seriously) ...
    Such as:
    looking at game engines.
(which the more I look at, the more I want to build my own).
But, seeing what I've been seeing, it makes me want to use some of the
older tools, but put them to use on a 64bit Athelon.
Well, I mean that a lot of games are still using the 32 bit architecture...right?
My God, imagine what we can do by putting the full potential of a 64 to use?

  • FreeLancer won't use the full capabilities of x64 bit due to no software and engine to run it ,strictly speaking x86,and on a 64 bit sys it runs in wow so it will be compatabal to run as x86 in x64 bit they are just now starting to write some programing for 64bit programs and games, and i know 64bit has been out a few years, but thats how it is,64 bit really shows it self with programs such as photoshop, and programs like it,a lot of games even have to be loaded and other software, in copatabilitie mode,we have several gaming systems that we use but i get the best out of freelancer on a 32bit system, have played it on several differant OS's and machines'would LOVE to see FreeLancer and some other games with a 64 bit gaming Engine, WoW think of the possibilities of using all the threads in a quad core or duo core to run the engines would be fantastic ,espeacily now that they are coming, with Grapfics cores on the cpus, combined with a top notch card and a grapfics mod,FreeLancer would really fly

  • have not found a lack of drivers for my 64 bit computers ,except with old equitment,i can play a lot of older games even back to 95,but why, some are still fun to play, and 64bit is were we are headed,32 bit is to limited, some day there will be the 128,than 256,and it will keep on growing,in computing power right now we are in the child hood of computing
