I prefer the Max Payne style. I have seen some funny after effects from killing hapless cleaners in Max Payne 2.
Realistic Vs. Over-The-Top Physics

i like the gravity gun from hl2
-
It depends upon the game. If it is supposed to be a realistic FPS such as HL2 is supposed to be, then the more realistic the physics the better. If it is an "old school" FPS such as Painkiller, then the crazier the better (within reason). Speaking of PK, I can´t wait until the expansion comes out! It´s supposed to be November 28 or something like that.
-
The PK expansion looks a bit crappy. I still need to play HL2
-
I don´t know about that, but the expansion *is* more of the same, but that is to be expected.

well, i like how its set up in halo 2. (i just love seeing a grunt flipping backwards and landing on his face when i shoot him with the battle rifle zoomed in while he´s running at me)
-
Phisycs is Realism, Realism ofcourse! 3 things that are most importent in a game for me are: 1. Impresive Realism. 2. Impresive Game-World, and Game-World elements. 3. Impresive Gameplay and Dynamics.
-
so your a hl2 man are you?

I like the over the top deaths. While I do like having realistic ones now and then, I prefer the over-the-top ones the most.
-
Meh, Im still to be thoroughly impressed by a physics engine. They seem to do the gravity thing fine but really haven´t incorporated mass properly into their modelling yet, HL2 is the only one I can think of that has even attempted it. Everything falls in relatively the same manner, joints on bodies move like they have been sitting a vat of baby oil, soft objects bounce the same as hard objects..etc. Don´t get me wrong physics engines lend a lot to the game, but it´s really only the tip of the iceberg.
-
The physics engines in games are getting better and better, but why the hell can´t they get rid of those damn clipping issues? Even HL2 has them! Meh, maybe I´m just getting picky in my old age .
-
I like both. I love realistic ones for games like Halo 2 (Yes Halo 2 is realistic because if chief can flip a 66 ton tank those grunts should fly when melee´d) Well now that I think about it it might not be realistic enough . But I like turining grav to low in UT2K4 turning on a stronger ragdoll setting then putting slow motion deaths on so I can see realisticly how they crumble and fall with style. Especially when running the matrix mod and using bullet time. Looks AWESOME.

what about physics in space sims? Over the top, or realistic? If you want realistic try I-war 2

You know, im speaking from a consumer standpoint here (so this may well be impossible) but I always found it funny how things cant be combined and used in games as far as engines are concerned. I mean you have Havok, which is awesome physics and ragdolls, then ya got something like Geo-Mod from Red Faction, and maybe a bit from that crappy game Soldner (completely destructible buildings) . I suppose its not really possible (or someone would have done it by now) but I think games could go really much farther than they are going currently by incorporating something like that into a single-game. I LOVE PAINKILLER Even played pincushion with the enemies? FWOOMP splat then they stick to the wall
-
@ff I am not meaning HL2. HL2 is just a FPS. I mean games like Frontier or Entropy, where thay are open ended, have impresive realism, impresive gameplay, and impresive gameworld. Not just 100k map, but a whole full universe consisting of billions o

HL2 rocks man, I have personally seen it in action. Nice blood and gore, people flying through the air and being impaled on sharp ojects from explosions, the gravity gun flinging radiators and anything not tied down through the air. It´s realistic physics, in an obsessive, over the top way. richardson wtf are you on? no one gets impaled on anything in hl2. at least nothing you can kill
-
Get impaled by all the nice sharp pointy objects you can shoot at them.

In every other genre yes, but a game modelled on 3-hour turning circles would not sell many copies
