Do they really have to "wake up to reality"? If people want to live in a bubble why can´t you let them? Maybe they´re only fooling themselves but you´ve got to think pretty damn highly of yourself to presume that you have a right to force unwanted realities into their lives. If the powers that be want TLR to be a "sanitized, kiddie forum where everything is happy, U.S.A is always right and the sun is always shining" forum, then let them have it. If you want to make a forum that´s mean, gritty and "realistic" (whatever that means) by all means, go ahead. In fact you don´t even need to do anything; there´s already a place for you, if you´d only visit.
Take a good long hard look at yourselves

It may be just me but I don´t get the point you´re trying to make. @Esky: that America comment, that´s called sarcasm Edit: Hmm... it´s starting to make a bit sense here. Darkov, somethings just aren´t allowed to be discussed here. Politics or religion for example. Why not? Just look at the past. There´s a reason why wedon´t allow it. Sure, there are those nasty grey-areas. Sometimes we make the right decision, sometimes we make a wrong one. As for the homophoibia... no one who is part of the staff is homophobic or whatsoever, trust me on this one. Edited by - Wizard on 3/2/2005 9:06:31 PM

"Darkov, somethings just aren´t allowed to be discussed here. Politics or religion for example. Why not? Just look at the past." So add to the politics and religion ALL the Homosexual related things. It sure is causing a problem now. Edited by - Alpha_Leader on 3/2/2005 9:27:10 PM

I´m truly sorry. What I have done by starting one thread here has allowed Alpha Leader to vent his homophobic spleen upon the community of TLR. If you were mod, would you lock up any thread that has the word "gay" in it? Ban gay and bisexual members from talking about problems in their relationships, or even mentioning it on here because YOU have a hard time keeping your mouth shut? Maybe parade over to the Fanfiction forum and check out every character in every RPG and fanfic to make sure they´re niiiice and straight. (The reason why FD locked the "bigotry running rampant" thread, by the way, is that he rightly felt that it would inevitably provoke flaming from certain members, and then counter-flaming, and so on--despite the fact no one had done that yet.) I´ll take Wizard´s word for granted that none of the staff are homophobic, so none of the above topics will be so augmented. Edited by - Wilde on 3/3/2005 4:06:18 AM

I am gay. Am I not welcome? I certainly don´t feel welcome thats for sure. "Sanitised" is a great word for this place, but "Over-sanitised" would be more appropriate. I´m 24, gay and I live in Northern Ireland. Therefore (apparently) I´m too old to have an opinion, of the wrong sexuality and I live in a place that is not only NOT the USA, but also pretty much anti-USA. Yet I am an "average gameplayer". So go figure. This website isn´t a welcoming, friendly place. Its a homophobic, pro-usa, bigot-fest. Moderators - Stop hiding behind the wall that you´ve built yourselves and give the users what they want. You pretend to offer a service, yet you are merely satisfying your own egos. I pity every sad little one of you....especially the ones that are so frightened by a sexual choice that they have to lock down every thread that barely mentions it.
-
that´s a bit strong dude. I wouldn´t call it pro-USA per se, or a bigot-fest, but certainly the rancid smell of it is in the air. Hey, I´m bisexual, 13 (far too young to have any good opinions), and from Canada. So we´re in almost the same position here and frankly I´m not feeling exactly welcome either at this point in time. Edit: What´s your msn? Apologies Wilde if I stepped over the line a little. But as you will probably know by now, living with a sexual preference that is "not the norm", can sometimes be very hard irl. Witnessing prejudice like this on the internet, a media that revels in freedom, pushes me one step closer to the edge. These people shouldn´t be allowed to carry on forcing their potentially-dangerous opinions on kids...they forget that by saying discussions of homosexuality are not allowed, they are in effect making it a taboo subject irl, which in turn has the knock on effect of homophobic violence which I witness on a day-to-day basis. I don´t use MSN I´m afraid, but we can always talk here for as long as it takes the moderators to delete all trace of me.
-
that´s unfortunate...you should get an account.( if/when you do you can add me at your_secret_detractor@hotmail.com) But yes, I have felt discrimination (you´d probably be more experienced in the matter, though). And THAT, of course, is on top of inner torment, and THAT is on top of social issues in my class that compound the issue. And to all those lucky straight bastards out there, being in the situation (and I´m sure slartifartfast can back me up on this) really, REALLY sucks. Because right off the bat based on your sexual choices, you´re pretty damn sure 75% roughly of all humans on the planet hate you. And there´s always the chance of being gay-bashed and killed when coming out of a bar one night. Altogether, because of this kind of homophobia (which is greatly different from FD´s point of view), growing up queer is horribly, demonically frightening. And if you "ban all topics that have to do with homsexuals", you´re buying into that and compounding the problem. Whether homophobic or not, it is bigoted. Edited by - Wilde on 3/3/2005 4:46:00 AM

Well said. I think that all homophobes should try and spend one week living the life (not practicing of course) of a homosexual. I´ve been spat at, had 7 of my limbs broken, my nose shattered by a bottle, my walls graffitied, my family attacked, my mother spat at on the street - and by who? Homophobic ****ers that hide behind their religion. Telling children that it is right to scorn gays, or even simply by saying the subject is taboo (same effect), is not only immoral and offensive but dangerous to the next generation. I feel sorry for you Wilde, my school years were the worst.
-
I by no means mean to make light of it, but, you had 7 of your limbs broken? Are you in actual fact an octopus?

lol. I should have said bones 2 in my right arm, one in my left, my right thigh, 2 ribs and a bone in my neck. It happens so often, its hardly reported anymore. Anyway, after my little chat with eraser (another thread), I´m going to stop this now and disappear again. Good luck all.

I have a problem with this conversation. Now I don´t know how bad it can get in NI but most of what you describe is history, I do feel sorry for you if your mother was spat on etc due to your sexual choices. To be honest, I´m English, and there isn´t a big anti-gay sentiment here. Obviously its not perfect and you do get the occasional ´gay-basher´ but then again you do get the occasional racist, facist and terrorist. Most gays live their life like an other normal person. Concerning your homosexuality, the one thing that I do know is that the average mid twenties homosexual male is possibly one of the people with the most open mind and are very sensitive to stereotypical prejudices. Until they make one themselves against somebody who disagrees with their lifestyle choice. "Religious Fanatics anyone?" Now, this is interesting as that word and what you mean by that offends me. I am a very devout Christian and the suggestion that we instantly inform homosexuals that they are evil deviants who are going to hell is just plain wrong. There is no other word for it, its just wrong. The one thing about the church that nobody ever mentions is that it does accept anybody from any class, race, gender or sexual viewpoint. We´ve moved on a bit since the days of burning people on the stake for their sins (unfortunatley ) and the quicker the world recognises it, the quicker we can all just......get along

Reading your post back again, it seems I misinterpreted it. My bad, sorry . I do agree however that somebody who hides behind anything to air their blatently homophobic beliefs should be *going back to before* burned at a stake Its a shame when I think of all of the good things that come out of religion, some people will think that they are all homophobic facists due to the select but vocal few.
-
It is true. The vocal ones do tend to be the extremists....whether that be christian, muslim or whatever. Its a travesty really. Anyway, I´m glad we´ve sorted our misunderstanding. Now I really WILL sink back to where I came from Cheerio

I would like to take the opportunity to point out the Loc is an openly gay man! He is a moderator, and do you think that if the moderating staff were homophobic, that they would be comfortable, or even get on with him?? I take insult, because I am being sterocast into what people think we are by virtue of what others say we are. I live with a gay 24 yr old man - whose bf comes round regularly (who is a top bloke, as is my housemate). However, apparently I am a raging homophobe simply because I am moderator. Thanks Now obviously you cannot generalise everyone like that, and I think its unfair for anyone to even attempt to state that TLR is anti gay at all! Seeing as an openly gay man was made a moderator by two admins should give an indication that, simply by the virtue that they didn´t give a monkeys what his sexual persuasion is, that the site cannot promote an anti gay atmosphere. Indeed, Wilde accepts Finaldays judgment (although I have talked to Finalday myself, because I still disagree with it ), however, everyone else is putting an emphasis upon ´our´ homophobia. Indeed, just because the thread mentioned gays, and the fact that FD is openly religious, its being held against him and labelled homophobia instead. Once more I see people putting 2 and 2 together to get whatever they want to see. I know some will not accept this, simply because they disagree (thats fine). As to my disagreement with FD locking the thread - I know some will be ´fascinated´ by this. There is nothing to be fascinated about at all, I disagree because I am not the same man as FD at all. We all have different thoughts, acts and more. However, FD emailed me to explain why, and I emailed back my disagreement. He is no more wrong than I am right! Its called a difference of judgement or opinion. I know where he is coming from though, and therefore I am satisfied with his call. I know other members are not satisified with his explanation, but that is because they formulated their opinion before hearing his reasoning - and therefore don´t believe his reasoning. Does that make them any more right than FD is right? No, its called a difference of judgement and opinion once more. The only difference I see is that this has been turned into a mini war against one person, simply because they are not willing to believe his statement or reasoning. Furthermore to not believing it, they have decided to label him as something purely on the basis of that thread and his religion. Not particularly fair in my opinion - but then again, everyone wants to be allowed to vent their opinions regardless of anyone elses personal feelings these days. We are also supposed to let anyone post their opinions for as long as they like as well. Guess we will end up seeing how long thats likely to be as well *edit* - just to let you know that I know there are spelling mistakes - I just cannot be bothered to go through them correcting them Edited by - Chips on 3/3/2005 10:57:33 AM

My point is that the forums just seem way waaay too protected. I mean I know we have to be a "family website" but the youngest I´ve seen must´ve been Little Monkey. I´m going to go out on a limb here a suggest that pretty much 90% of these users can deal with these issues and don´t need to be protected from them. Of course we can´t let the forums drop into a flaming ninja samurai chaos gorefest but surely some balance can be struck. There are some things that you downrght can´t talk about for obvieous reasons, but I dunno, maybe a certain posting area dedicated where people who want to discuss those "heated" topics as such with others. And it can be contained in here. I just feel like these days you can´t discuss much without it getting some warning. This goes for everything. I know I havn´t been here as long as others, but some say it was easier to talk about "hot topics" in the old days. I don´t know, I wasn´t there and I know that people get in an uproar but like I said before, there could be a place where people can discuss it like reasonable adults. Without flame wars being started. If someone wants to be gay, devoutly religious, bi or whatever then that´s fine. Far be it from me or anyone else to class them as "inferior" or in-human. We´ve all got arms, legs and eyes and are all still human regardless of our opinions. And if you guys really are reluctant to make that new forum then could we pull back the forum control police, ease the "clicker" back and de-sanitize slightly to the level of a forum and just see how things turn out. If i´m wrong, tell me so in a couple of months. but until you let things play themselves out, you can only predict what is going to happen. And let me tell you from experience, assumption is the mother of all f****ups Whenever death may surprise us, let it be welcome if our battle cry has reached even one receptive ear and another hand reaches out to take up our arms -- Ernesto "Che" Guevara
