the War of the Worlds (Spoilers may be within)

 • I dunno, haven´t seen the original

 • *sigh*...It´s got to be worse. It has Ben Affleck. They keep on pumping out horrible films and remakes of those horrible films based on Wells´s novels. It´s quite pathetic. No doubt this one will be as horrible as the rest.

I´m going to see it tonight with some friends. Spielberg likes to screw up endings, but perhaps his special fx prowess alone will redeem the movie. I forgave Lucas for that, and Spielberg has at least ten times as much heart and soul poured into ANY ONE of his works than Lucas ever will. I will post a review later after watching it.

 • I saw it, i rather liked it...aside from the fact that it pretty much ripped the book in half. While watching it, I couldn´t help but think that everyone but the main character were complete morons. Especially that little girl, I almost wanted her to die just for screaming the whole movie.

 • i really liked it kudos for thinking ben afleck was in it, i like your comments, really shows you know what the crap you´re talking about and puts all your OTHER coments in a new light as "maybe you havent got a clue what you´re on about " the tripods are awesome, their weapons go pow-puff in a satisfying way of taking care of the scum of the earth. There are all kinds of continuity problems which bugged me, but for visuals and story, its pretty good. Lets not pretend this was going to be anything else but a whiz-bang SFX extravaganza. We all know the plot, even if we´ve not seen the original or read the book, we´ve seen Independence day, which is the same movie but...different. cruise is good in this, not ´Collateral´ good but adequate. His role was a bit cliched but thats forgivable. The kids are annoying and you dont really believe the bond between them. Plus dakota fanning is far too smart for her age, so she just comes off as unbelievable. especially when her smarts go completely out of the window half an hour in. i couldnt help but think of half life 2 by the last quarter of the movie and im looking forward to someone pumping out a hl2 mod for this so i can drive a tripod around and blow up people. go see it for a fun adventure and dirty aliens who think they can take over earth. dont go thinking its going to be an epic of Dune proportions. It´s better than the original movie but also different. completely different character we follow this time around. -arc

 •

Is it as bad as the original film?

<font face=´trebuchet ms, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica´ size=2> Which one? There were two: one in colour and one in black and white. I saw parts of the black and white one but can say for sure that the colour one was shocking. The radio series remains far and away the best, though

 • I saw it and it was kind of..... awesome! Arcon really took the words right out of my mouth for every technical bits, and I only want to add one thing: this movie is about survival, not victory. It´s a drama about human nature and human beings facing jeopardy. The aliens are there just as an excuse. Keep this in mind, expect good acting and good special effects, instead of big bangs and typical bravado-that-can-overcome-insurmountable-odds plot. Some would find the ending to be laughable. If you are one of them, remember that Indepence Day aliens were booted because they forgot to install a friggin firewall.

 • Damn. I´m oblivious. Oh well, even worse. Tom Cruise cannot be forgiven after the Last Samurai. Collateral was a damn good film, but Cruise´s performance was not nearly enough to redeem him. Edited by - Wilde on 7/3/2005 11:48:00 AM

 • well i mostly went to see this movie to see the massive distruction of a large portion of the world that led up to.... Edited by - Wolf_Demon on 7/4/2005 11:55:45 AM

 • I saw War of the Worlds today, and for the most part, I was impressed. Except for the ending. The movie was really dark and creepy and the acting was, for the most part, impressive. "He´s a freak, ladies and gentlemen! He´s a freak!"

 • Ok it is set, I will not see this movie. In fact it is arcons review that set my mind. After seeing batmans begins, war of the worlds would be a supream disapointment. That and I have not been a fan of tom cruise for years. Blessed Be to all those that still dream of the flight to the stars.

 • Arc, if you haven´t watched the first two films, read the book or heard the radio series, you are probably too sheltered anyway and this is your punishment. EDIT: Disclaimer: This is supposed to be ironic, please do not view this in any way as actual, serious consideration. The Evil Thing in no way holds elitist views in the respect of depriving people of the chance to watch any film without spoilers and this was also in no way a personal attack on Arcon. Edited by - The Evil Thing on 7/5/2005 1:41:28 PM

 • dont be a cunt, im talking a little bit of consideration for people who ´havent´ being all elitist about it isnt gonna help any. i went to see this version with a guy who had no idea what the story was, nor how it ends. im sure there are people who didnt give two hoots about ´reading´ or maybe didnt catch the less than good movie made before this. maybe i should just tell people how fight club ends, how the usual suspects turns out? maybe i think people that havent seen/read the endings to those stories needs punishing as well. -arc

 • Nice rant Arcon. I thought the emoticon made it clear I was being ironic but that clearly escaped you, so just to clear things up a little... I was joking

 • I just finished reading the book, and despite some glaring differences between the book and the new movie, the movie is surprisingly accurate. The real main difference is the setting. The book took place at the end of the 19 century in England while this new movie takes place today in the United States. Some of the scenes in the movie were switched around from the book, probably because of pacing. The main characters were different, but how they dealt with the situations were fairly similar. I also like the fact that in the new movie, all the technology in the world, couldn´t stop them. Just like the book. The movie is not exact to the book, there´s plenty of inconsistencies, but the story is the same. If you guys haven´t read the book, I would strongly suggest that you do. "He´s a freak, ladies and gentlemen! He´s a freak!"
