GTA, Hands off???

 • heard a report yesterday on the news that staeted that rockstar game did indeed place the sex scene in the game themselves and it was not the work of a hacker ( guess thatts their work for modders) and that the scene is also in the ps2 and x-box versions. Now I think the whole thing is geting out of hand for cristes sake its a game !!! If I didnt want my kid to play a game I wouldnt let them, its that simple. As for them playing it over at a friends house I would be intouch with the friends parents and POLITELY ask them to see that while my child is there they dont play certain games!!!Why must we be a blameless socity?!! Blessed Be to all those that still dream of the flight to the stars.

 • I find it kind of hypocrytical myself in fact. A game that already has a M rating and which is clearly been labelled as a violent game where you can rob houses, steal cars in a violent way, kill innocent bystanders, shoot cops in the face, pick up prostitutes, do pimping missions and more. Then there´s fuss about a sex mini-game where low-poly naked characters doing some hankypanky? I mean, what´s the fuss really about huh? The fact that Rockstar put it in the game in the first place, but at the last moment didn´t find it appropriate or whatever their reason to pull it was and locked the content? I mean it surely can´t be the sexual content right? Sure, the code was already in there and was hacked and made into a patch that unlockes the mini-game. But tell me, what´s the difference if the code was already in there or if the code was not initially in there, but a certain ´mod´ puts that kind of content in there? I mean, if some modmaker decides to make a ´hot coffee´ kind of mod for Freelancer where a sequence comes up where Juni and Trent are doing the Adam and Eve thing, what would happen then? Are they going to give FL an AO rating than? Of course not, it´s due to a ´mod´, so nobody can do anything about that. But since the code was already in GTA: SA, eventhough it was locked, but hacked eventually, Rockstar is bad and responsible for destroying the youth? This is what I mean hypocrytical. I think it´s all about the parents and not the companies that make games, nor ESRB. If I see parents buy games like GTA: SA for their ten-year-olds, they can´t seriously be worried about their kids being exposed to some nudity or humping movements. Come on, shooting cops in the face, riding over sweet little old ladies in wheelchairs with a monstertruck and the streets covered in blood is OK, but nudity and a little sexual activity is bad? And what´s even worse, the group of parents that buy these games for their little kids and not knowing anything about it and eventually they find out what the game is about and what their kids are seeing in the game and then them getting mad at the companies who created the game. Excuse me parents, isn´t it your job to review the stuff you buy for your kids before you hand it to them? Didn´t you ask the shop what the game is about or didn´t you see the M rating label? I really think it´s the parent´s job to check what you buy for your kids or what your kids buy when they are on there own. And it´s the job of the shops to not sell M or AO rated games to little kids, same as sigarettes and booze (unfortunately this still isn´t the case often). I mean, I think it´s so naive and hypocritical that certain people always blame videogames or movies for violence taking place in real life. And another thing, I have played Fable and in the game you can marry and have some ´good time´ with the Mrs. She´ll ask you if you two are going to bed and the camera switches to a black screen, but you can hear some breathing etc. sounds that give a pretty clear indication what they are doing. But as I said, the screen goes black so nothing to worry about for kids right? But what if there was some code stored in the game by the creators that has the sexual content locked just like GTA: SA? And what if someone would hack that code and unlock that code? Well? See what I mean? What is the difference between a patch or mod that unlucks certain content already in the game and a mod that adds certain content? In my opinion there is no difference, because in both cases the owner of the game has to specifically look for the mod and knows what it does. So again it all comes down to parents having to monitor their kids better. Sure it´s easy to blame things on society or moviemakers or gamemaker or Santa Claus, but when are people going to take a good look at themselves and their own part in ´the destruction of our youth´ as they call it? A better world always begins with yourself right? ______________________________ Eraser Webmaster of The Lancers Reactor E-Mail: eraser@lancersreactor.org MSN: eraser@lancersreactor.org <img src=´http://www.lancersreactor.org/t/i/lan_butt.gif ´>

 • Wow, Eraser. You managed to say that way better than I was going to. And without any swear words in it. Agrees.

 • Hillary Clinton and Bill O´Reilly are the discarded halves of a Push-me-Pull-you(dr dolittle reference a little out of place? perhaps..... but are they both spewing llama dung from their oral cavities? certainly)

 • Heh. I used to think that putting the two in the same sentence would embody the essence of juxtaposition... But I agree. I still don´t get it, though. The violence, heartlessness, torture, and murder--not to mention the misogeny--are completely fine for children. But a short cutscene involving *gasp* NUDITY.... And the nation is in an uproar. People are so stupid.

 • Ya know,it´s amazing Duke Nukem 3D didn´t cause this much aggro when it came out..it had porn shops, porn mags, birds who´d take off their tops for a dollar and sex screens all over the place!lol Hillary is just doing it for the sad vote

 • disturbing news for all modders.( copied from my internet provider tech. news page) Video Game ´Mods´ Under Scrutiny By MATT SLAGLE, AP Technology Writer Fri Jul 22, 8:07 AM DALLAS - With many video games, there´s no "game over" screen, no reason to ever get bored. In a long-standing practice called "modding," fans create their own new chapters, artwork and other twists to extend the lives of their favorite games. Many game makers freely encourage the practice and give away free software tools to help. But some in the industry are now wondering about the ratings implications posed by mods after a Dutch programmer created one that unlocks a hidden sex level in the violent action game "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas." After all, video games aren´t like the feature films you see in the theater or get on a DVD. They´re made of software code. They´re malleable. The Grand Theft Auto mod, called "hot coffee," was developed by Patrick Wildenborg, who made downloads freely available on the Internet about a month ago. Most major retailers promptly removed the game from store shelves after the Entertainment Software Rating Board, an industry body, changed its rating Wednesday to "adults only" from "mature." Like souping up car engines or expanding the capacity of TiVo digital video recorders, modding is largely unsolicited and uncompensated. For most, modding is all about the love of games, not of dollars - though many large publishers have found ways to cash in on the tinkering that can change the way characters appear or add elements the creators hadn´t intended. Though most mods are written for PC games, it is becoming increasingly popular on consoles. In 1999, modders turned Half-Life´s "X-Files" world of government conspiracies and alien invasions into Counter-Strike, a multiplayer game that pits soldiers against terrorists. The mod, which remains popular to this day, had completely new maps, weaponry, graphics and sound effects. Half-Life´s owner, Valve Corp., eventually released Counter-Strike to commercial success. Many workers at the Bellevue, Wash., company are themselves former modders. "Hot coffee" in many ways is unique among mods because it accessed content left in the game by its maker, Rockstar Games, instead of adding new material, said Jeff Gerstmann, senior editor at the review and news Web site GameSpot. When the sex scene was discovered, Rockstar initially blamed malicious hackers for the problem but later conceded that the material had been left in the game by its commercial developers. It depicts the fully clothed lead character having sex with a woman wearing a thong and T-shirt. The mini-game can be won or lost depending on how well players fill up an "excitement meter." Even though Rockstar admitted the mini-game was hidden in the retail game, the "San Andreas" ratings flap could change the way game companies view mods. In a statement, the Entertainment Software Rating Board´s chief, Patricia Vance, called on the industry to proactively protect games from illegal modifications by third parties, "particularly when they serve to undermine the accuracy of the rating." But completely stopping modders could to be a near impossible task, said Sid Shuman, an editor for GamePro.com. "It´s something, frankly, that digital entertainment is not really well equipped to deal with. You can´t really stop people from making changes," he said. "People will always find where that one file is, and they will always be able to modify it." Another catch is that the game-development process involves programming concepts or levels that are never fully explored but left in games because altering or removing them could cause other parts to stop working. "Grand Theft Auto" was released in October with an "M" rating, for players 17 and older. It was last year´s top console game, selling more than 5.1 million copies in the U.S., according to market analyst NPD Group. Xbox and PC versions were released last month. Rockstar has now stopped making that version of "Grand Theft Auto" and is working on secure update that complies with an "M" rating. In a bit of irony the company is apt not to find amusing, Rockstar says it will also offer a downloadable patch to fix the sexual content in current PC versions. Copyright 2005 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed. what makes this disterbing is that rockstar games already had this content in the game but the press is makeing the modders the guilty party and as I read it the game development companies may try to impliment canges that make mods not only more difficult but in a extream case aginst the law. • it may not work for M$ but writing your Congresspeople a bonefide paper letter could have a serious effect on their willingness to support any anti-mod legislation.if you´re too lazy or cheap to do that you can send them an email(which is undoubtedly only read by chance by an intern who doesn´t give a crap about modding - but might notice if every email coming in says ´save modding´ etc) the modding community as a whole must band together in this struggle for sanity,we number in the millions(counting coders and users alike)and we can have a serious impact if we choose to.Will you?

 • while I am not a modder ( I currently have my hands full with my own projects) but I have every intention of contacting my congressman. how about the rest of you ? this has gone on far enough. Blessed Be to all those that still dream of the flight to the stars.

 • GTA San Andreas is awsome. (if thats how you spell it) And long time no see everyone. Is locutus still around? moderating all my good posts lol. Anyhoo yes, game raters have gotten stricter over the year. The N64 game James Bond: Goldeneye was rated teen, and if you shot someone there would be spots of blood. Now it seems that if theres any blood is games it´s mature. ESRB sucks now adays.

 • Yes Demon, im still around, although im not really a moderator anymore, whaddyawantmefor eigh?? anyway, what me old boss said..
