Prandtl-Glauert condensation cloud (Sound Barrier) pics

  • hmm..reminds me of those things vets put on cats and dogs to stop them gnawling at themselves.... Nice pics anyway <img src=smilies/icon_smile_big.gif width=15 height=15 border=0 align=middle> and like a phoenix i´ll return from the ashes....with the help of the re-spawn key<img src=smilies/icon_smile_tongue.gif width=15 height=15 border=0 align=middle>

  • no it´s just that we prefer a sensible mix of consonants and vowels in our pronouns <img src=smilies/icon_smile_tongue.gif width=15 height=15 border=0 align=middle> sound barrier sounds so much cooler than ´prhandlt gluandetl´ i think <img src=smilies/icon_smile_wink.gif width=15 height=15 border=0 align=middle>

  • yeah but whereas one is actually the sound barrier, ther other is just a freak weather condition and has NOTHING to do with the sound barrier. In short those ARENT pictures of the sound barrier because its SOUND and cannot be seen. its like showing a picture of a lightsaber and saying that it´s the sound barrier. -arc

  • Arc, if you want to get picky the Prandtl-Glauert cloud forms at speeds equal to or in excess of Mach 1. So it does have something to do with the sound barrier. It´s due to the drop in air pressure behind the craft caused when it travels faster than the air can move behind it to equalize the pressure.

  • doesn´t anyone else have any planes other than Americans? how about? some nice pics of Lightnings; proper planes not this modern rubbish, with climb records still not surpassed today by anything you lot can knock up on the other side of the water &lt;sniff&gt; and look at those lovely Firestreaks, ahhhh happy happy memories. <img src=´http://www.vflintham.demon.co.…craft/lightning/cond2.jpg ´> <img src=´http://www.thundercity.com/PLA…ES/Lightning%20Vapour.jpg ´> and I saw a Hunter do it in a dive once. and Buccaneers, but they were transonic anyway, lovely plane, tough as old boots. wonderful aircraft. world beaters, all lost to us now. now we either have to buy American junk or *co-operate* with our Yooropean *partners* - am I the only person who sees something not q right with RAF aircraft having German bits in them? &quot;thou hast awoken from thy slumberr, o ancient Sorrowe of yearres..&quot; Edited by - Tawakalna (Reloaded) on 8/14/2005 3:07:33 AM

  • maybe they never did and it was all Communist propaganda? <img src=smilies/icon_smile_wink.gif width=15 height=15 border=0 align=middle> obv I´m kidding but they did akshuly pull the wool over the eyes of Western *intelligence* for a long time. back in the 50s when those big jet bombers first appeared over Red Square for the parades (stop that nostalgic weeping, Locutus, it´s over, ok!) Western military experts were aghast at not only the unexpected technical capabilities but also (got to laugh at this) the number of these long-range jet bombers the Russkies had. Turns out years later that they didnt have anything like that many. they were just flying what they had back to the airfields outside Moscow, getting new numbers painted on and then flown back over Mockba lickety-split. fooled everyone! and Western defence planning was based on erm being taken in by the Russians pretending to be more powerful than they actually were. 40 years we lived with a *Soviet threat* that was a complete phantom, and we all beleived it. famously there was widely circulated picture of a Mig-25 shooting off this huge AWL long range air-to-air missile, this again terrified western intelligence into thinking the Russkies had this fantastic long-range ability to shoot down Western patrol and ELINT planes from deep within their own territory. turned out it was cooked up by some lad in his bedroom with a model kit and some domestic fireworks. (wasnt me btw!) I liked those swept-wing 6 engine things best, Bisons were they codenamed? huh, can´t remember now, used to have to know all this but forgot. thought those Blinders looked groovy though, Tu-22s? do they still use any of this stuff or has it all been scrapped now?

  • Taw, if I recall correctly the American Raptor design is based on a British design built in the 60s which was pulled when the US threatened to stop selling us nuclear weapons.

  • y´see, there again, we were buying nukes off them, while we were q capable of building our own. We had Blue Steel, the most advanced stand-off missile in the world designed for the V-Bomber force (stuff your Bee-52s, we had V-Bombers; Vickers Valiant, Handley-Page Victor, and the superlative Avro Vulcan, with them the RAF could go anywhere) and what happened? Blue Steel got cancelled in favour of the American Skybolt which was already plagued by problems and ended up being cancelled itself. Our entire independent strategic military force ruined by Govts wanting to suck up to the Yanks. TSR2 cancelled in favour of F-111s that we never actually bought and we ended up with Phantoms. TSR2 would still have been in service today ffs! one of the greatest multi-role planes ever built and BRITISH. oh i could weep i really could. and as far as modern day stuff is concerned, you´ll note that our transatlantic cousins still can´t get VTOL right and had to take us on board to build that JSF thing, yet i read the other week in the FT that they´re q happy to take our VTOL technology to make it work but arent gonna let us have the proper finished plane when its done, they want to cut out the stealth bits cos they dont want anyone outside Ammurica to have it. yeh ok we´ll have our VTOL engine that you can´t build back then, build it yourselves. oh sorry you CAN´T can you? bah, everything was better in the past. except the internet but we managed perfectly well without it.
