New sectors etc

  • Hi folks, a Newbie here to this forum but an old hand at FL!

I am looking for some new sectors to play on my Freelancer here at home. I'm 50 and not that brilliant at PC's so going to one of these global FL servers is no doubt out of my league. Probably because my PC would not be fast enough and neither would my internet ADSL connection.

I bet it must be exciting though from what I have been reading. However, as I said, I'm happy just to potter along with my original game.

I did download the "Freelancer Mod Manager version 1.4 beta 4" a few years ago and that expanded my ships and a few things ( when they worked) I quite like my Babylon 5 ship mod and the speed mod but now I would like to have a go at a new universe or something.

Could anyone suggest something or am I out of line with forum policies?

    Hope to hear soon,

    Steve :)

  • to be honest , i didn't really understood what you asked about, but:

    1. if you asked about a mod that had new ships, probably you should try discovery, monkey universe, nightstalker's universe, freewolds, new universe (+plus some other more, i don't know them all...)
    2. if you can't connect to global server that is because windows closed it, but there are still some fixes to that, like: FreeLancer Server Direct Connection Tool (FLSDCT) http://www.freelancer-foren.de/havenadm ... FLSDCT.rar , alternative global server http://fllistserver.com/news/ or GLS Workaround 1.0 http://www.freelancerserver.de/download ... nd_v10.zip

    have fun ;)

  • Tekagis Treasure is always a blast too, I managed to load it up with OpenSP as well and explore a bit. The new version has two very fun / frustrating minefield mazes :D Some challenging npc's as well, and not too rough to make cash.

Nightstalker's Universe is great, but you'll find it's only Multiplayer and can be a painful start (but well worth it). ADSL should be good enough connect for nearly any server out there.
WTS 3.42 has some nice additions and was SP compatible if I recall,
TNG also had quite a few fun additions.

I'd recommend using FLMM 1.3 -just check for mod compatibility (in the filename, most mods have the modname.zip.flmod or modname.(7zip or 7z).flmod
The .zip.flmod are *usually* FLMM 1.3 and 7z/7zip are *usually* FLMM 1.4

With 1.3, mods uninstall more reliably, with 1.4 mods are easier to download because of 7 zip's much better compression.

I'd recommend doing the following though:

    • Either route you take, it's best to first back up your Multiplayer ID (if you've played online at all) using the [drive:/path]\Freelancer\EXE\myflaccountid.hta utility -open that file and make a hard copy of the info.
    • Next head to your save games folder (My Documents\My Games\Freelancer\) and make a copy of that so you can copy it back when you re-install fresh.
    • Then completely uninstall FL, delete the directory and all inside
    • Now reinstall Freelancer and the Quickfix patch from EOA (link on Lancer's homepage)
    • Now you can back up your install using Windows Backup -just choose the base Freelancer directory and a safe place to store the file- or you can just ZIP the entire Freelancer directory.
    • Lastly, I prefer to create a shortcut on my desktop pointing to the backup file

It seems like a heap of work, but once you do it once its a real time saver in the future. Some times mods dont uninstall correctly, so you can just go in and delete the whole Freelancer directory, click your icon to restore FL and be back ready to install a new mod within about 6 minutes total.

Oh and if you have crashes, many times this is due to incompatible save-games. With the mod active, go to FLMM's menu bar>Tools> and choose "Delete Autosave". If it's a popular mod, chances are your savegames are what causes crashing.
Anyways, there are tons of great mods to provide months of new gameplay experience. And don't let the pvp scare ya off from multiplayer =) it's only a game death, and many times the players / server police / admins there will be glad to help answer questions or even help you get started.
