Shroud question

  • I´ll second that! Run the missions in the Pheonix first to see what´s it´s like to really be in a battle. • Shroud is kinda cheating, you can cloack, and for a long time too, but then again the enemy´s fighters can cloack, but they don´t cloack that long ----------------------- Mad Dog <img src=´http://www.nukevillage.com/cgi…vatar/custom/00000002.jpg ´> United SL Modelers¸ Administrator for Nuke Village Webmaster for Red Faction Village

  • rofl, people that fly pheonixes and wolves tend to say that the shroud is a boring ship, shroud pilots tend to laugh at wolverines pheos, i wonder why 101st Wolfpack Wolfpack forum

  • Clarification Spawn...Nowhere did I say the Shroud was a boring ship. My point being this, if you fly a Pheonix, you´re forced to learn piloting/dogfighting skills much more intensely than the Shroud. Take 2 pilots (otherwise evenly matched in skills), one learns to fly exclusively in the Shroud and the other learns to fly the Pheonix first. Then put that same pilot in a Shroud up against the pilot who only trained in a Shroud and the pilot who flew the Pheonix will, no question, be a better pilot because they have inhierently better flying skills. BUT do the reverse and put that pilot who learned to fly in the Shroud into a Pheonix and they simply lack the dogfighting skills of the pilot who trained in the Pheonix. It´s all about pilot training, not which ship is better for Pete´s sakes. You´re a great pilot in the Shroud Spawn, no question there. But if someone (with same abilities from the beginning and given the same amount of time to learn piloting skills) learned first in the Pheonix, they domininate in a head-to-head dual in the Shroud simply due to the skills obtained along the way. The abilites of each ship are almost identical with very few minor exceptions, we´ve had this debate before and the stats of the ships don´t lie. The biggest difference is the cloaking of the Shroud. They fly and feel almost identical. Flame on! • MD, it took some real guts to fly a WW I biplane, but I´ll take an F-16 and blast his ass out of the sky even if he calls me a wuss for doing so, I like the odds to be in my favor and if something goes wrong I´ll try my own ingenuity. <img src=´http://www.lancersreactor.org/images/news/mssig.gif ´> The Major.

  • Well I use it for the manuverbility and speed. I even had my friend over and I disabled the cloak with sledit. He still says it´s cheating ´cause ti´s faster than all other fighters. Man he´s annoying. Krystina... i love you...

Side by side comparision: Pheonix Shroud Look closely at both, in every single catagory there might be a difference of maybe one or two stars...save one! Look at the acceleration of the Pheonix compared to the Shroud. No contest! Also, the Pheonix has more firepower and more decoys. Sure, the Shroud is barely "faster," and is ever so slightly more agile but in a dogfight the acceleration differencial becomes an issue. Flame on! Edited by - Stinger on 18-02-2002 20:41:06

  • 1. acceleration is wrong, the shroud acellerates far faster ingame, and burners remove the issue of acceleration 2. i can rape wolverines in h2h stinger, yes i lose to the best woles in h2h, buh only just, and this is head to head not dogfighting 3. the pheo is basically an easier ship to fly than the shroud because its slower so everything happens slower and can be thought about more 101st Wolfpack Wolfpack forum

  • SL doesn´t behave like most flight games where the slower you´re going the more manueverable you are (this is sensible) so if you are in the faster ship then theoretically you have the advantage from a maneuvering standpoint. I know there´s a lot of Phoenix fans out there but I´m not so hopped up on it. I preferred the Wolverine and I enjoyed flying the Shroud, maybe its cheating but it was a neat diversion from your normal space fighters. <img src=´http://www.lancersreactor.org/images/news/mssig.gif ´> The Major.

First of all you´re counterpoint is flawed from the get go Spawn. Why would the idea of the burners removing the issue of acceleration be considered IF it really wasn´t an issue to begin with? Acceleration wrong?? . Now that´s just boo-hockey. You think out of all the specifications of all the ships, weapons, and hardpoints the one for the acceleration of the Pheonix is the only one that is wrong? That´s quite a coink-i-dink if I do say so myself. Bottom line, have you ever had a race (in game) with a Pheonix while flying a Shroud? You know, like a drag race of sorts. I haven´t either and we both know that is the only way to decide the whole issue. The burners being better on a Shroud are a given (slightly better, but nominal at best), but unless you´re running AWAY from getting your clock cleaned by a Pheonix, why would the burners even be a concern? Chasing one down you say? Again, any pilot that would run in a dogfight ought not be "pulling on supermans cape to begin with." Hehe, I just love this debate. Edited by - Stinger on 19-02-2002 01:20:55

  • actually your sorta correct, i don´t know how good the pheos accel is compared to the shrouds, although the pheos deceleration is a lot worse, so i´m just guessing burners do remove accelaration, i´m almost always buring, and burners will acclerate you to full near instantly in the shroud, or at least get you up to 400 if u don´t want to burn constantly - thats why they remove the acceleration issue and if a shroud loses in head to head it can retreat, if a pheo loses in head to head its dead because it can´t escape 101st Wolfpack Wolfpack forum

  • Actually, if you look in SLEdit, the Phoenix´s acceleration is .15 worse than the shroud´s. How I came to this conclusion? Look under ´inertia.´ Max speed determines engine power, and inertia determines acceleration, decceleration, etc... The Phoenix´s max speed is 380 (Only 20 behind the shroud, and 40 when both have afterburners), and inertia .95. The shroud has 400 max speed, and .8 inertia. This means that (although the links you pointed to stinger prove otherwise) the Shroud has better speed and inertia. I guess you could make a formula: s/i where s=max speed and i=inertia. Using this, the Phoenix = 400, and the shroud=500. I have no Idea what those two numbers mean, however. Don´t get me wrong, I´m a Phoenix flyer (and when I do go back to the shroud for the rare mission, I find it overresponds to my controls and the guns get too weak). Hrmmm... maybe the formula is s*(1-i), which puts the phx. at 19 and the shroud at 80.... that can´t be right... (Minor topic rambling: StarLancer would have a lot more realistic movement (physics engine) if they could just eliminate the friction. Actually, this would make the engine almost perfect!) There are also pitch, yaw, roll, and their respective inertias to deal with. I think this is rather self-explanitory. The various rotation (yaw, pitch, etc) displays your rotation power, and the inertia displays how hard it is for the power to affect you, and how long you keep rotating in your current velocity. See how the shroud has higher yaw and pitch max´s than the phoenix, and lower inertia´s? And, of course, the armour/shields are pretty easy to figure out, the higher the armour/shield rating, the better your armour/shields. Gun energy is how long your ship´s energy stores hold up against weapons. This still means that the proton cannon´s as weak as usual, just you can fire it longer. Gun recharge is how fast it recharges. Okay... I forgot where I was going with this! I think it was to help prove about their acceleration which was inertia... When I was flying the shroud, I found that it stops almost on a dime without using rev. thrust. This is because it keeps only 80% of it´s speed once you turn off engines, one computer cycle. The phoenix keeps 95% of its speed. Which means that the phx. is harder to speed up when it´s stopped, and harder to slow down once it´s going. If two people had a drag race, the shroud will win. Unless it´s an obstacle course, then its more up to pilot skillz, but the shroud guy will still have an advantange. I still prefer the phoenix, and I can hold my own against many shroud pilots (not the best pilots, however), and on many times I can just keep yelling to the other guy to "Hold still will ya? Just let me kill you!". And on a personal note, I think that the shroud has too strong shields. A fully charged Nova Cannon only takes away about 80% of the shields (shield strength of 22, a bit stronger than the wolv´s.). *sigh* All this makes me wish my firewall would allow me to play SL again, but nooo! Argh! My posts are so long, I forgot what I was talking about! I just woke up from 7 hours of sleep too! This teacher´s strike is making me lose my intellect! My mind and body are withering away! • wow impressive post, it is actually possible to kill with the nova cannon, the trick is to charge it, keep trigger held down, swap to other guns whislt still holding trigger, when their charge runs out (quite rapidly) switch back to nova cannon which will still be charged release trigger and kwazapow though really it is a ****e weapon its the pheos inertia that annoys me, i dislike the way to hug a small rock u have to be pointing at it all the way around 101st Wolfpack Wolfpack forum

  • Does it really matter if it can cloak? I mean you can still see it anyway, even when cloaked. And Major Striker, that metafor you brought up with the A Bomb is really dumb if you ask me. First off all it is not a laughing matter that it was actually used and second totally out of line. Japan was already defeated, they just wanted to see what it would do.
