I hate to say it, but I just get the feeling that they simply abandoned it. First there´s all the delays -- as well as the fact that certain aspects were still incomplete -- it´s like they weren´t devoting enough resources to finishing of the game properly. And what activity have they done after it´s release? Basically there was a terrible problem with cheating, so they quickly made a minor patch for the server program. And for the game itself, there´s been nothing. If they still had any interest in FL, they would have released patches for the game, improved cheat protection for MP servers...and maybe even provided dedicated servers themselves. As for the developers, DA, I think I heard they were working on something else...possibly an X-Box 360 game. So if you´re talking about Freelancer 2, I´m seriously doubtful. But if you´re talking about a completely new game following the "Freelancer" concept, we can only hope that someone else (preferrably a big company who can afford a large budget) decides to give it a shot

In all my time of playing it never really occurred to me. Now that I think about it, it would be nice if you could choose from a few different ones.

I know a lot of people seem to have complaints with Windows, though they do seem to be getting better. I remember loads of people complaining about how bad Win98 was. I didn´t realise it myself until I got XP (In the 3-4 years of using XP, I only ever saw a blue screen ONCE). So after some vast stability improvements -- and after a million or so security fixes, it looks like MS finally has a fairly solid OS. So if Longhorn (now called Windows Vista) follows this trend, I look forward to upgrading. Mind you I´m a little pi$$ed that they´ve probably removed the sidebar...it was one of those little additions that I was looking forward to trying. On to the topic itself, with the virus that targets the new OS. Frankly, I´m not surprised that this happened. After all, with all the MS haters out there, you probably had hackers out there determined to create something the second they got their hands on it.

While everyone´s giving their little arguments, I thought I´d make a few observation of my own. Firstly, perhaps it´s not showing it as it happened, but maybe a RECONSTRUCTION of what history says happened. Afterall, the narrator says "that was 800 years ago", so he was telling it from the perspective of someone in the FL timeframe. Secondly, you have to keep in mind that the Coaltition ships were bombarding the launch site from orbit. Now surely it´s possible that during the bombardment, slepper ships could have been destroyed -- or at least damaged, making them unable to launch (explaining the "failure" report that someone pointed out). I´m not necessarily say that there were other sleeper ships, just pointing out that it´s a possibility. But when it comes down to it, it´s not like it really matters. Well I was just going by the alert signs that I´ve seen. Actually, out of all my countless hours playing, I´m not sure if I´ve actually had a trail alert ... or maybe I have and I just didn´t notice. At any rate, this has given me something to think about, and I´ll look out for it next time I play.

Chrisbee - you are obviously talking about the E3 2001 trailer. We´ve all seen it...well those of us who have been here a while. I should point out, they were NOT real clips from the game. They simply created a bunch of cutscenes using in-game graphics (at the time), showing what they PLANNED to have. I may be wrong about this, but I´m convinced that there´s no version where that stuff is implemented (at least not properly) into the game. Though I will agree with you on one thing. That trailer is what got me all excited, thinking of the amazing potential that Freelancer (or a game like this) had. Shame it never turned out that way. I can only hope that in a few years time, someone makes another Freelancer-type game and gives it the time and resources to reach that potential. Edited by - Braxton on 8/21/2005 2:42:11 AM

I think it usually appears when an enemy fires a missile at you, and it´s warning you that a missile is tracking you. At least I think that´s what it is... EDIT: When I wrote this message, I didn´t notice that you said, "It´s just like the red missile alert symbol, but on the other side of the navigation bar." Silly me, I should read these post more carefully. Edited by - Braxton on 8/21/2005 2:33:02 AM

Dan, I should point out that Nomads did not destroy the Sol system. It happened in an old version of the intro but they cut it out. So I think for all intents and purposes, the Sol system is still there. Since I was looking through the message board, I thought I´d just mention that.

To me it appears someone went out and bought the "freelancer2.com" domain name basically so he can sell it for a proit. Did you notice the link at the bottom? It´s a place where you can buy the domain name. The funniest part is the description: "This makes this domain a perfect environment for a website about the game. Especially with Freelancer2 coming out soon." It´s been almost 2 and a half years since the first games release, and no word of a sequel (and hopes for one slowly fades with each passing month), yet this moron is claiming that it´ll be "coming out soon", lol. :p Edited by - Braxton on 8/16/2005 4:29:20 AM

Correction: that´s not a Beta version, that would probably be an early Alpha build and I´m guessing that no one here has such an early version. While I´m here, for those who don´t know what the Beta stage is, I thought I´d enlighen you. It goes into this stage after the game has been completed, and they do playtests (they get people to play it) so they can identify any bugs, or tweaks that need to be made before its release.

If someone started development (whether DA or someone else) and basically kept tight lipped since then, they may say something soon. I mean the first game was unveiled 2 years into production, and it´s been 2 years since its release. So if someone is working on a new FL title, they may finally unveil it at E3 in May. It probably won´t happen, but it was a nice thought.

You look down the right hand side of the home page, you´ll see a list of places to get it. BTW, it´s spelt "buy". I´m not criticizing, just trying to be helpful.

@ Bakedpotato - I´ve seen those shots before. They´re on the last 2 pages of screenshots at GameSpot, I even started a thread and made a link to the page. Even then, I had people telling me it was old news. Besides, the "space sim" ones loo

Sometimes I can come up with decent ideas, but I´m just not all that good at things like names. If it´s not "Freelancer 2", then I´ll say "Lancer 3" (since it´s the 3rd installment). On the other hand, they might just forget about FL and create a COMPLETELY new game. If that´s the case, they could call it just about anything.

Well your suggestion is basically to make Freelancer into a "Massively-Multiplayer Online" game, which isn´t exactly a new idea. Then as good as it seems to have all players on one server, there´s one problem. I mean lets say this server is American-based, but what about the players in Asia and Europe? You see, unless they have a fast connection, it means a lot of potential lag for them. Anyway, just because this idea was no good, I hope you aren´t discouraged. Speaking of FL-based ideas, I´ve written down a whole bunch of stuff in a word document. One day when I get around to completing it, I might put it online and provide a link on this board.

With the way Freelancer is, it would really benefit from an expansion. [Add the usual, extra storyline missions, more random missions, and perhaps integrate some of that anti-cheating stuff. Though it´s almost a year and a half, and expansions are usually announced by that time. On the other hand, if it´s a whole new game that´s going to take quite a few years, it´s understandable for them to keep it under wraps for a while longer. The thing I don´t like is that since that minor patch for FLServer, I haven´t seen any activity on their part. I mean all the anti-cheating programs were made by the community. So far they haven´t released a SINGLE patch for the game itself...the only patch I´ve seen is that unofficial patch created by someone in the fan community. To be honest, if they had no plans for another FL game, I wish they would just tell us. I mean if there isn´t going to be one, I would like to just know now.
