13%, was a bit surprised at the loading screen as the arrow just kept tilting over and over towards 100% gay! I don´t really see the point though, all it´s trying to find is if you have sterotypically feminine attitudes to things and labelling that as being gay.

Gotta go with EB I´m afraid. Work would most likely be tougher for lower pay, much less time to spend lazing about. Judging from the pictures you posted FD you yearn for the days of cowboys, and if you were there you´d probably be doing some sort of agricultural work. Even now with all the machinery available to make the job easier being a farmhand is incredibly tiring. I did it briefly at one time, you´d spend your lunch break wolfing down a lunch you´d never normally have the appetite for and then you´d pass out and bleed every ounce of rest possible out of your break. Not exactly relaxing, huh?

Welcome back Major Striker, I joined up in Feb ´03 and I recall you being around but not for long! EB has only just arrived back from a long hiatus himself from what I´ve seen. I think it may have been due to a pesky girlfriend! Last I heard from Mustie he´s been having troubles accessing a lot of websites at work these days. (He´s a mod now, if you didn´t know) Fear Factor (also a mod) moved to Indonesia, he´s here from time to time. I remember RubberEagle and Spear. They´ve shown up every once in a while, only briefly and then left. You forgot Zeratural! He disappeared and has made one or two brief reappearnces but he´s never stuck around. Many of the other names, I at best only vaguely recognise, they may still be hanging around other forums, but I think many have left.

Sawubona "Intombazanyana"! I have no idea what your name means but I do know a Zulu word when I see one! Welcome to TLR!

Oh man, I recognise a Boricua Delight post when I see one.

Nice one athena, make massive generalisations about half the world´s population from your limited perspective. I don´t think you could do anything much stupider than that.

Anyway, after the trapeze breaking and me falling a few feet directly onto my head I managed to get up and bring the two bits of the bar back indoors. I sat down for a bit watching the telly with a sore head. About two or three minutes later I turned to my Dad, pointed at the broken bar and said "what happened?" Edited by - Recusant on 3/7/2005 1:54:50 AM

Being prejudiced can´t be compared to killing someone. Those that killed Matthew Sheppard knew that killing was wrong and did so anyway regardless of whether they knew homophobia was right or wrong. There´s a fair bit more to Apartheid in South Africa than what you wrote, you really can´t compare them. There was international outcry against S.Africa. It became a pariah nation and suffered all sorts of embargoes. The people advocating apartheid were well aware of the arguments against it. If you´re kept in an environment where you´re told that this group of people are bad and inherently evil and then hear the same thing from everyone you speak to. When your source of spiritual guidance also tell you this, you´re going to reckon that God agrees too. You aren´t going to associate yourself with them and hear their side of the story. You are isolated from knowing or understanding anything different. I didn´t say that Wagner was right about anything, merely that he may not have been aware that he was in the wrong. There´s a difference between being mistaken and being intently malicious. Finally, my point was more that, it´s difficult to look at someone who lived so long ago that their environment was effectively totally alien to your own and declare that they are bad people based on modern morals. Otherwise perhaps we should go round demonising nearly every famous man in history for being sexist.

well... as a human being, he was a loathesome, elitist, rascist, sexist, homophobic anti-semite. His music is brilliant, but he probably didn´t have a talent for writing anything under 3 hours in length. (And almost all of his operas, especially the Ring cycle which features the Nibelung dwarves, have strong anti-semitic references. And Siegfried is filled to bloating with Oedipal ideas...uggh)

<font face=´trebuchet ms, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica´ size=2> Is it really fair to denigrate someone who was no different to all of his peers and his society? Wagner may appear to be a nasty piece of work by modern values, but during his time it was normal and acceptable to be racist, sexist, homophobic etc. Don´t forget religion plays a heavier part in people´s lives at this time than it does now and the bible was taken much more literally. For example there were those that believed they were ordained by God to rule over the blacks , some considered the Jews to be "Christ-killers" etc, it all depends on their interpretations. Anyway, before I go off on a tangent, what I´m trying to say is that Wagner´s ideas and points of view will have been moulded by his upbringing in a society that had yet to learn much about equality, so it´s not really fair to judge him by today´s standards.

Although all our improvements never fail to also induce stress. As we advance we increase the complexity of our society and actually end up making our environment even more stressful. It reminds me of a quote from "The Gods must be crazy" where the narrator compares the lifestyle of the bushmen to civilized man:

...Only 600 miles to the south there´s a vast city, and here you find Civilised Man. Civilised Man refused to adapt himself to his environment, instead he adapted his environment to suit him. So he built cities , roads, vehicles, machinery, and he put up power lines to run his labour-saving devices, but somehow he didn´t know when to stop. The more he improved his surroundings to make his life easier, the more complicated he made it. So now his children are sentenced to 10 to 15 years at school, just to learn how to survive in this complex and hazardous habitat they were born into, and Civilised Man, who refused to adapt himself to his natural surroundings, now finds that he has to adapt and re-adapt himself every day, and every hour of the day, to his self-created environment. For instance, if the day is called "Monday" and the number "7:30" comes up, you have to dis-adapt yourself from your domestic surroundings, and re-adapt yourself to an entirely different environment. "8:00" means everybody has to look busy. "10:30" says you can stop looking busy for 15 minutes....and then you have to look busy again, and so your day is chopped up into little pieces, and in each segment of time you have to adapt to a new set of circumstances. No wonder some people go off the rails a bit.

<font face=´trebuchet ms, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica´ size=2>

From a slightly more pragmatic point of view, watch your water intake. Having the squits that much is going to make you dehydrated. So, uh, have fun.

Sorry Boscoe, but dead bodies causing epidemics after a natural disaster is an unfortunate myth. The WHO will tell you itself http://www.who.int/inf-pr-1999/en/pr99-42.html (just search the document for the word malaria and you´ll find the section you´ll need). They do say that malaria and dengue fever are a problem in Aceh, but do not contribute it to anything to do with the dead bodies. The main problems are the contamination of water supplies and disruption of medical services that allows preventable diseases to kill people. The disruption of pest control may allow mosquito populations to get sufficiently out of hand but it still has nothing to do with dead bodies. Mosquitoes can sense body heat and carbon dioxide concentrations which allows them to find warm blooded animals, a cold dead body wouldn´t be on the menu.

kimk is Korean but he lives in Malaysia. EDIT: Not to be pedantic Boscoe, but the presence of dead bodies is not associated with the transmission of malaria. Edited by - Recusant on 12/28/2004 11:20:55 AM

no problem! I remember watching the second episode of Top Gear on the Hilux. It was just hilarious really, watching that thing come to life again after being blown up as well as all the other stuff they did to it.
