Sigh! This question seems to come up every 6 months or so. Basically a locked gate, whether in ANY saved game file (character file) or in the initialworld.ini file (server-side) will reinforce the locked gate in each other. It is of course reinforced through modification of the saved game file itself yet for the initialworld.ini file only the copy in memory is affected (FL INIs are never modified by the game or it´s files, INI files are simply data files). There are two ways to unlock one or more gates NOT unlocked in the original FL: - This is alluded to in several of the posts above. Edit EVERY saved game file AND the INI file at the same time! If not as I said above any "taint" of the INI or saved game file played in the game with any gate locked will reset all previously unlocked gates to locked next time the character is played. - The second way is drastic and often seen on many servers. Wipe and restart the server anew with NO previous characters and the INI file edited. While drastic to some, it is a better option than trying to edit hundreds or thousands (in my case) of saved game files. _____________ Earendil SysAdmin of Boston Freelancer server Server community website & forum: EarendilsPlace.net (server rules)

If you can´t ge your FL MP ID# then work with each FL admin at each server you have characters with. Usually all but the busiest of admins will help you transfer your old character files to your new account. Be prepared to list all your characters though to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt you are who you say you are. _____________ Earendil SysAdmin of Boston Freelancer server Server community website & forum: EarendilsPlace.net (server rules)

Although flserver will work with either WinServer2003, WinNT2000 and WinXP, use what you want. I, too, have been using nothing but WinXPPro. Boston has been up for 2 years 4 months and WinXPPro can go for a month without a restart. I usually have to do one though because of some Windows update that comes along and demands a reset. _____________ Earendil SysAdmin of Boston Freelancer server Server community website & forum: EarendilsPlace.net (server rules)

FL MP is about the people you play with, rarely about the pretty pictures and finding the next system. Play on a server that has more than just you and your friend. Play a hostile group or be hostile (within their rules of course!) and see how you fare. It can get frustrating dying a thousand times but take it well and you´ll earn respect. In this nebulous ether called the Internet that´s very hard to earn... _____________ Earendil SysAdmin of Boston Freelancer server Server community website & forum: EarendilsPlace.net (server rules)

Hehe! Some of us have been playing a while and have found plain vanilla FL just too easy. You think starting with $500k is easy? Well even some newbies can make it nearly out to Omicron Theta in a Starflier. OK, that´s stretching it a bit but it really is easy. Some minimalist mods (like the one on my server, Boston) are minimal in the fact they little change the original FL vista. What changes are things we´ve agreed would make the game more challenging. Lello´s mod and I think a few others go along this same route except they usually add more powerful weapons (like the Paralyzer launcher) to the game. Still the idea is to continue challenging the FL purist without exstensively changing the FL experience. Nevertheless try servers at will. Your mileage may vary. _____________ Earendil SysAdmin of Boston Freelancer server Server community website & forum: EarendilsPlace.net (server rules)

As an example you can use my link below to go to the home page of my website. On the left side there are links to data files, regualrly updated, for my servers. These are examples of what FLStats, IFSO and FLAC can do with some creative CMD command file editing and FTP directing. The file with info on who´s online in which system is directly from IFSO as Chips said. _____________ Earendil SysAdmin of Boston Freelancer server Server community website & forum: EarendilsPlace.net (server rules)

There is often a firewall in your gateway (some people call them routers, even wireless routers but they do more than just route!). If you have wireless you probably have a firewall built in. So you must follow my instructions here on how to open that tunnel or virtual server or whatever your gateway calls it in EVERY firewall. Today´s ADSL and cable modems are even including hardware firewalls built in so you may have more firewalls in your LAN than you think. _____________ Earendil SysAdmin of Boston Freelancer server Server community website & forum: EarendilsPlace.net (server rules)

I post some interesting reasons to play FL MP here. As for other reasons bp and elle have said most of it. The one thing I think is the most important difference is with playing the ´puter, once you beat it you usually continue beating it. You figure how to win against it. Against other players with their myriad of styles you will never get tired of the endless ways you go boom or make others go boom. _____________ Earendil SysAdmin of Boston Freelancer server Server community website & forum: EarendilsPlace.net (server rules)

I can think of several reasons: - It´s EASY! Let´s face it FL is easy. If you don´t know what you´re doing (i.e. You didn´t play SP) then it will take you a week to get to a high level. If you did play SP it should take you a couple of days. If you are elite it should take you less than 1.5 hrs to make a million. Yes, this is on a plain, vanilla (no mods) server. - It´s free! Well you still have to have an Internet connection but you can even play FL on a modem (just don´t expect coherant player versus player fighting interaction). - Play where the NPC´s are more powerful, smarter, better aimers, faster, more agile, meaner, tougher, etc. There are several mods out there, some are minimalist like just server-side mods (like the one on my Boston server) and some are more (like the Epsilon mod on Boston2). - Player interaction is by far the best part of MP. Depending on the server you could be looking for months or find that special server right off. There are plenty of servers that entice you with cash, ships and other nonsense. The only thing that really matters is playing with a bunch of like-minded individuals. So start looking, there are a lot of servers out there. - Time must be spent. Whether fighting, chatting in TeamSpeak, hanging out in NY or even in the forums you must spend the time playing (i.e. interfacing). Some extreme examples. Boston3 has been around for 6 months, Boston2 has been around for 7 months, my forums have been around for 19 months, my Boston server for 26 months and myself playing FL 27 months (FL has been out for 28 months, March 2003). No, I didn´t play every night (well, close but not EVERY night) but I play more than once a week. Oh one more thing to Striedes. Your comment to Trev1 to buy another ´puter since he has one ´puter for more than one person? Right on! _____________ Earendil SysAdmin of Boston Freelancer server Server community website & forum: EarendilsPlace.net (server rules)

Well I waited a good year and a half for someone out there to start a good FL Admin board but nothing was secure enough. So I started one. True it´s as secure as the people I let in but then I also ask for advice and information from the other FL admins. If they aren´t happy with a prospective FL admin, then I am not happy. This is why it can take some time to be elevated to FL admin status on the board. We still try to contribute to the broader FL community and this is why we have both public and FL admin areas. New and prospective FL admins can still ask questions of the FL admins on the board but they are also coagnizant of the potential of leaking certain secrets to the general public, especially cheaters. In the FL admin areas talk can be unrestricted about any FL admin secrets so even more can be learned there. I don´t promise we have all the answers even in the "secret" areas but we do have a smart bunch of FL admins. My FL Admin board is one of a few places where we can talk about our "job" with few restrictions. If we each contribute in a constructive way, we can all benefit. _____________ Earendil SysAdmin of Boston Freelancer server Server community website & forum: EarendilsPlace.net (server rules)

This has been kicked around more times than a soccor ball at a World Cup match! Unless someone is willing to start this large project AND the fact FL is M$´s, I doubt it would happen. Besides the modding aspects, why place a server in Linux? I am not trying to start a war or slam either side. Just wish to discuss the technical pros and cons of such a choice. I have been running at least one server for 26 months and have had few OS problems, just FL issues so is this to address those issues? _____________ Earendil SysAdmin of Boston Freelancer server Server community website & forum: EarendilsPlace.net (server rules)

There is a caveat for broadband phones but it depends where you place the phone, before or after the gateway. <pet peeve>Remember the gateway is what the sales dweebs associated with these gateway manufacturers call routers but they do much more than just route!<per peeve over> Broadband (BB ) phones can be placed in either location but I prefer after the gateway to ensure the gateway is the last thing connected to the Internet and by far the most stealthy. If you connect the BB phone after the gateway, your gateway should support QOS or Quality Of Service. With this enabled and set to the right queuing matching what the BB phone uses, then you should have priority access between the BB phone and the Internet through your gateway. This insures no dropouts in your BB phone conversations. The next thing to do is read the phone´s requirements for ports and ADD them to the gateway along with flserver ports They should never overlap and with 65,536 possible ports that usually never happens. The downside is you could never use those ports your BB phone uses on your LAN but that´s usually of no consequence. If you connect the BB phone before your gateway, you do not have to worry about QOS and opening the BB phone´s ports in your gateway. In fact you have to do this if you gateway doesn´t support QOS! With the BB phone before the gateway, all BB phone related traffic is intercepted before your gateway and your gateway never has to route anything related to the BB phone traffic. Usually BB phones will pass anything else on any other port other than the ports it needs for the BB phone. So with the BB phone before the gateway you can setup the gateway as I mention in the other post under The Complete Guide to Setting Up an FL Server . The downside is you now have a device connected to the Internet that may not be as stealthy as your gateway and thus may be detected and exploited. Still everything is safe downstream of the gateway and that is the most important stuff to protect. Hope that helped. If not feel free to set up some time on TeamSpeak via email and we can actually talk through it. EDIT: I wondered why all my black eyes using B - ) (take away the spaces) wasn´t working. Only B ) (take away the space) can make this . _____________ Earendil SysAdmin of Boston Freelancer server Server community website & forum: EarendilsPlace.net (server rules) Edited by - Earendil on 7/9/2005 6:40:34 AM

Unless someone (usually the mod author) creates files for IFSO that recognizes all the NEW ships, weapons, engines, etc. placed in the game, then IFSO will have problems with it. You could try doing it yourself, going through the IFSO error log but that is tedious - due to Epsilon I know! _____________ Earendil SysAdmin of Boston Freelancer server Server community website & forum: EarendilsPlace.net (server rules)

I know of nothing that actually places ships at coordinates. Besides you´d have to have references for every single system and that may be too much for anyone to remember or bother programming into some editor. Best to use the FL editors out there (IFSO comes to mind) and place your ship at some dockable point. _____________ Earendil SysAdmin of Boston Freelancer server Server community website & forum: EarendilsPlace.net (server rules)

Preacher, I was about to get all hot and bothered in a post telling you how wrong you are! Then some of my past programming experience and microprocessor classes from my distant past came bubbling (struggling?) up to the surface and I realize you are right. Most threads in a program are not written for seperate, stand-alone programming tasks. Instead most threads are used as a way to serialize a task or many of the same task which are (usually) by the fact it´s in a program, interdependant. Since it isn´t important it´s actually in a thread, it becomes more important that the tasks are clear, defined and seperated in mind and in practice. This really isn´t what threads were designed for. Yet today´s ´puter systems this is not much of a problem as the speed of programming is so fast switching from one task to another and back again is is only a minor performance hit. Thus the code gathers some threads that really shouldn´t be threads at all. I sincerely agree with you on one point. With the dual-processor systems coming, I hope programmers are more aware of thread interdependance and independance so that programs will run much more efficiently on multi-processor systems. _____________ Earendil SysAdmin of Boston Freelancer server Server community website & forum: EarendilsPlace.net (server rules)

cjabates, I´d have to disagree with you in theory. flserver runs on either of my servers about 7-8 threads. As long as there is MORE than one thread, a dual processor system in theory will run two threads at the same speed a single processor system runs a single thread. Of course it´s more complicated than that and possibly what you see if you have a dual processor intel system. There is memory sharing that intel does (yeck!) but in AMD Opteron systems each processor has their own memory. Still how does this show up as true performance in a FL server? Only a side-by-side comparison will do. I know of others with dual Xeons and such intel stuff but not a dual Opteron. I happen to be in the market for one but they are rarer than hens teeth and I have not the time to build one. I DO have the cash to buy one!
