Yes exactly. Missiles are just a tactical option. VS some players you will find them forcing you to eat alot of your own missiles, and it forces you to change your patterns, or else dicontinue use strategically for that fight. This is one of the reasons pure missile duelers are a risky proposition. Once a person gets your number, in terms of timing, they can see you finished very quickly. This also goes for mine-spammers, who get owned by CD spammers in short order. When I see a pure missile ship I sit up and take note. I adjust my flying patterns, and remain wary. But I also have a feeling of confidence that I´ll win as long as I don´t get careless. It´s the guys with a balanced loadout that scare me, because either they copied it from someone else, or they are used to winning, and selected a balanced loadout to give them tactical options so that they maintain their win-possibilities in any type of match.

These are what I call ´unbalanced´ loadouts. That is, they invite a veteran player to explore the weakness of the config. For instance, when you see a guy who doesn´t have at least a cutter mine, you can stop and turn at will. It can sometimes give you an edge. Or, if you see a loadout like 6TDC+sunslayer, all you have to do is refuse to go head on, and you´ve basically won. Some people use pure TDC/missile loadouts, like 4 TDC and 2 firestalkers. These are very hard to beat, but the trouble with them is that when the tracking bug strikes, they always lose. It´s not good to trust your fate to a lack of lag, or to a head on pass. It´s best to be capable in all situations. Mine is typically 2TDC, Hornet, Ripper, Cball, 2 cannons and 1 blaster. I´ve seen many other effective loadouts, but i feel the versatility of the CD, the insta-kill of the Cball, and the all-weather performance of the nomads gives me many options in a fight, that I can exploit when i need to. If the counter-missile skills of the oponent are very good I can just decide not to use my cball, and still do alot of damage with my guns. It´s all about having options...

Now Fear Factor, that is a good response lol! Well put! Sorry you took this so serious guys. You asked for gripes, and that´s what it is. Just a rant. Nothing logical or serious.

My Gripe is about regular forum-goers. Why do they come here? Is it that they´ve forgotten the address to their local IRC server and are jonesing for a chance to express themselves? Or is it that they were browing for that latest mod (which, of course, they will play for a grand total of 15 minutes anyway) and got sidetracked and sucked into posting here for 8 hours out of the day? You see these regular posters patrolling the other forums so as to prevent a new player from making a similar post to one which was posted a year ago on the 22nd of november by a Mr Whoreallygivesadam, and these forum regulars take their jobs seriously. If anything, it is a measure of their own personal worth that they know each and every post made in each forum (evar). Also, they have developed a borderline miraculous skill with the borderline retarded search engine that allows them to call up any thread based on any criteria they can imagine. And of course, they expect the newcomers to the forum to have developed this very same skill, regardless of the contradiction between the terms ´newbie´ and ´search engine user´, which as we know, exists because the search engine takes months of time to master to the point of being able to preform even the most trivial of tasks. So the irony of the situation is of course that these ´regulars´, in fact, seem to rarely play the game itself, for which the forum was designed to provide information. They have post counts in excess of 6000 but should you be lucky enough to actually spot one of these fellows on a server, you´ll find that you can annahilate them inside of 3 seconds because they are still using the ´masterful tactics´ put forward by some guy a year ago, and haven´t seen a need to allow the topic to be re-opened since. Interestingly enough, these forum regulars will frequently admit their lack of skill for the game which they have commented on for the past 6000 posts. It boggles the mind why one would bother to come to a forum and blather on about a game one plays infrequently, and skillessly, but these fellows are certainly known to do it! Ahh. And then there is the off-topic forum, where it´s like the Cheers Bar, and everyone seemingly knows your name. Until such a point, that is, at which they forget your name. But nevertheless, they know all about each other´s lives and ambitions, and hopes for the future, but they haven´t fired a blinkin´ gun in the past 3 months. "Why isn´t that little piece of information in their bloody bio?", one might ask. Well because it´s off-topic! Yes indeed, it makes one wonder what the point is of having a webserver where the off-topic forum is the only valid forum anymore, since it is patently obvious that all the other topics have been discussed nearly to death. And to emphasise the absolute perversity of the whole situation, a regular user makes a post about past posts, and it gets 400 responses, and is stickied, and placed at the top for all to recognize as the great post it is! The ultimate Icon of irrelvency! Here it is: The post: about posts! I can tell you, it is almost enough to make one wonder about the sad urge to express, and wonder why the Bio´s mentioned in the forum have failed to mention how much of a life it´s regulars need. Yeah. Here´s the thing. The CD travels fast. It hits the enemy ship and creates a nice explosion with a nice big fat radius. Any munitions *live* within that radius are detonated. Therefore, when you hear "incoming missile", and fire a CD right away, it zings to the enemy ship at up to 800 m/s and detonates, catching any emerging missiles/torps/mines IF it was fast enough to get there before those munitions left the blast radius. Typically, If you are within 350 meters of the enemy or so, and have good reaction speed, you can detonate any single munition he fires, by shooting your CD. On the other hand, if he´s smart, he´s spamming you with CD´s too, and you can´t tell the cballs from the CD´s. Never feared a torpedo. Ever. Actually, I´m happy when people are packing sunslayers, because I make them eat them on their own shields. If they were firing missiles, they could use cruise disrupters to spam out the missile warning so I don´t know when to counter with a CD. But with a torpedo, they don´t have that luxury. Torps will thin out the newbs really fast, but a good pilot with a CD will eat the torp users for breakfast. Besides. Cballs have all the hull killing power of a sunslayer (insta-kill), turn 5 times as fast, and allow you to still mount a CD.

Roger. Great server. And for me, the strongest attraction of excelsia: there´s actually a reason to fight wars on this server. Territory DOES exchange hands. Remember those long drawn out wars on Elite that amounted to nothing more than dock-camping each other for weeks on end? Well, finally, there is incentive to strike, incentive to win, and incentive to choose your battles carefully. Political machinations abound in the rich RP environment (a bit over my head though - i´m more of a slugfest lover), and the admins are fair and just. On the other hand, server slots are at a premium. Don´t bother checking the server out. I´d hate to have to wait to log in, over a new player...

An interesting question Stinger. As always, the ´common sense´ aspect we attempt to apply to the subject fails miserably, since we have absolutely no (zip, zero) conception of two critical factors in the equation. We don´t know how large the universe is (infinite, or finite?), and we don´t know the odds of life spontaneously occuring. Time as well, is possibly finite, as for instance, with a big bang theory. Without knowing the answer to these there is nothing to apply common sense, or gut instinct to. Yes the universe is big, and yes it is old. We have (BigX) times (BigY) times (smallZ) = (BigX)(BigY)(SmallZ), where X is space, Y is time, and Z is the probability per unit of time of life occuring in a given area of space. Without knowing at least the degree of magnitude of any one of these factors, we can´t even surmise whether it is probable or not. The likelyhood of life on other planets remains a complete unknown. Maybe, maybe not. We can let gut instinct stray into this territory where it has no right to go, or we can just use some simple math to realize we end up with a big X. On the other hand, that´s no reason not to hypothesize and investigate, or even attempt to support our hypothesis that there is other life. We should just be aware that we don´t have the tools to test that argument as of yet.

I´ve read about more security flaws for PCanywhere by at least double than Terminal server. Microsoft flaws get the press, and it´s all the ´hax0r´ rage to say microsoft apps ´suxx0r´, but i´d never use PCanywhere on my network, thank you. I´ve found Terminal Server to be fairly good. The level of security (as always) really depends what you do with it (and your firewall(s))- configuration-wise.

Terminal Server anyone? It´s free for up to two administrative connections - no additional licensing needed, and comes with win2k server. PCanywhere is clunky by comparison imo. Additionally, every XP machine can connect via remote administration, without further need for a client. Edited by - Navigation_Boy on 21-09-2003 21:08:34

Meiyo is biased alright. He is biased in the way that everyone is. Bias is not a vice, it is a common trait shared by anyone who lives their lives in only one body. I have a list of personal biases myself. I am biased against cheating. I am biased against racism. I am also biased against hanging around servers where name-calling and flaming is the common mode of communication. Actually, I hate all three of these, and refuse to play in an environment that harbors them. I am not biased against killing though, or pk´ing. I love that stuff. Fortunately, on browclopsia, the admin shares the same biases I do. When someone cheats, they are punted. When someone repeatedly makes racial slurs, they are punted. When someone tries to turn the player interactions on the server into a large flame war, and posts things like "We are going to destroy the server" then they are... well, you get the picture. I resigned from AE because I did not want to be personally represented by a flame fest. I´m biased against it. I think you can see where this is going. Flaming, name calling etc. is not a personal luxury. In most real world situations you will be removed for this kind of thing. I see people fired from my company every month for the same reason. You may not be able to be arrested for it, but you do get excluded from social situations for it. I can´t imagine inviting a **** to my poker night, for example. Frankly, I didn´t actually read all of any of your posts cleaver, no offense, but I don´t see what relevance you have on the server now. I´m trying to pick things out that are important to me to read. Edited by - Navigation_Boy on 19-09-2003 00:31:03

Yeah getting debris to spawn weapons would be an interesting trick. That kind of thing is worthwhile keeping. It might have a good role in areas like the hispania wreck. I´m betting you get asked about using that little peice of work in the future, to be honest.

Did something change? The last time I dropped in the admin was no where to be seen, and i met 3 modders within 3 minutes in New York. If the server has been cleaned up it might be worth a second visit. It seemed to me at the time to be a pretty titanic job though..

yeah Richard_s had the answer. On the other hand, if the velocital difference were great enough, I suppose the wave compression and (thus) spectra deviation would be much greater.. It´s just that this usually seems not to be the case.

´Turret´ has to be one of the most mispelled words in existance. This is just a random observation. I even have a few friends who say ´turrent´ on a regular basis. It´s odd, because the two do not sound even remotely the same, unless you´re talking to someone with a lisp.. OK, i know.. I´m wayyyy off topic. 8D

Account registry exports contain the entire account. Therefore, you can only send an entire account complete with it´s capability of 5 characters. Account creation is often locked when admins experience problems with modders. Most admins unlock the servers on a random basis to allow account creation. This keeps out all but those seriously intent on playing on the server, as lazy modders can´t be bothered to learn how to tie their own shoelaces without a cheat, let alone check repeatedly for unlocked account creation. If you have a friend you desperately want to bring into your game, you might want to try contacting your admin. He/she might help you. Most Admins are happy to have new players, they just want to keep out the anonymous modders.

My Calculations concur with yours. I made the roppongi run in 11 minutes though, and it yeilded 5242 credits/cargo unit/hour. It was a perfect run with no interupptions. Taken down to the second (instead of the minute) and assuming no interruptions, it seems only slightly less profitable than the yanagi->new berlin run, but on the other hand, it´s far easier to be neutral with all parties in this sector of space.
