That universe is his baby, ain´t no one gonna tell him what to do. As far as the whole "parsecs" thing goes, you can imagine that the Falcon´s speed allowed Han to run a more sraight-line path, closer to the black holes (which are why the run is dangerous in the first place), thereby shaving off both distance and - obviously - time.

*WHOOOOOSH* Holy crap! What was that? Oh, just my point going straight over some kid´s head. Can´t say I´m surprised. I think Wolf_Demon wins though. I like his style.

Okay. I´ll go sit in the corner now...

Aha. Ahaha. Ahahahahahaaaahahahahaaahahahaaaahahaahahaaaahahahaaaahahaaa..! etc. Come on, C. Don´t feed me that. Unless I´m much mistaken - and I´m not - *you´re* the one who first attacked those with a different opinion. Granted it was a clumsy "well lots of other people liked it" move, but still. Don´t presume to lecture me about letting people have their own opinions when YOU yourself won´t do the very same thing. This Tawhatever guy doesn´t like the movie. Why must you try to convince him that he should? Or am I misreading your actions? If all you´re doing is taking the piss out of the guy then, well, ignore me and my self-righteous rantings. Hell, ignore them regardless, what do I know anyway?

For those neigh sayers, it now has tied with Superman in the fastest to reach $200 million An afful lot of people seemed to like it.

<font face=´trebuchet ms, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica´ size=2> "Neigh" sayers? You mean horses? Or naysayers? Or both? Are you calling the people who don´t like the move horses?! That would be very bad form. And "an afful lot of people"? More like "a lot of awful people". As for that last linguistic travesty, I´m having some trouble making head or tail of your point. I think you´re saying that if something sucks it won´t be successful. But then this "Even in your world, the tech world, look around and see how many people buy something because its popular, not because its well made, durable and all." comes along and destroys that thesis (I think). So I´m baffled. If that was your objective, well, congratulations. You win. Edited by - Aliens! Aaaah, aliens! on 5/30/2005 10:19:19 AM

well it was good to see Yoda live up to his reputation as Jedi Master, rather than just being old and wise. R2-D2? making him kick ass just didn´t work for me. I much prefer him when he gets fried, the annoying little boiled egg on stilts. My fav R2 scene is when he gets shot during the battle of Yavin, the obnoxious little mechanical git.

<font face=´trebuchet ms, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica´ size=2> So am I to understand that mister Towelkanananana identifies more with C-3PO? Hmmmm... That would make sense, your Gay-o-Meter score was rather high, wasn´t it? I hate lazyfingers. Blah. Edited by - Aliens! Aaaah, aliens! on 5/29/2005 4:45:36 PM

Legos and oranges, Wilde, legos and oranges. What do genocides have in common with Chernobyl - other than the fact that they both sucked? If you are going to draw an analogy, at least find something with significant similarities. You see, a good example (to support my case) would be the discovery of problems with DDT, resulting in the subsequent dropping of that particular pesticide. Just as Chernobyl-style nuclear power production caused problems, so too did use of DDT. That, of course, does not mean that all nuclear power generation or pesticide use must be bad. Pesticides are useful, as are nuclear power stations, we just have to make sure that we don´t use the wrong kind. So you see, it is possible to learn from mistakes and change.

No. Because that would be really, really f***ing stupid. If you "just dump" it on France, you´ll get craploads of radiation wafting over the Channel. And you´ll die. Truth be told though, that doesn´t bother me quite as much as the fact that I´d not be able to get good Camembert anymore.
-
Right, because we all know it´s just impossible to learn from the mistakes of the past. Yeah, wind and solar power are nice ideas, no doubt about that, but there are two very important things they both need: space and consistently good weather. Sure, a guy like you, living in Canadia has lots of space to spare, but someone else, say, in the UK - or even worse Japan - doesn´t have that same luxury. As far as weather goes, well, that´s really hard to guarantee unless you´re in the middle of the freakin´ Gobi desert or whatever. Spanner - I find that the best way to become a part of the community is act as though you´ve been there forever. I may get the odd "...and who the hell are you?" comment but, more often than not, I simply insinuate myself into the community quite easily.

In a similar vein... Thermal Depolymerization (TDP). Now, I know the idea is to move *away* from burning fossil-fuels, but the beauty of this system is twofold. One, it utilizes existing organic compounds which, pretty much regardless of what you do, will be released into the atmosphere (contrast with the current mining system, which brings up long buried carbon compounds and relases them into the atmosphere). Two, the resulting oil is generally low in chemicals which, when combusted, release very dangerous compunds into the atmosphere. Unfortunately, like IFRs, this system will likely be killed by shortsightedness. The main problem with the idea the we just should use cars less is that it´s a significant paradigm shift. It´s not the sort of thing people are just going to do. It takes a lot of time and effort to get people out of their ruts. Now, that isn´t to say that it isn´t a worthy goal, but we do have to try to fix things in the short-term as well. Besides, it´s not the walk to the shop that worries me, it´s lugging the god-knows how many kilos of groceries back. And don´t even think about telling me to get one of those dreadfully ugly mini-carts or whatever. Bleah. Oh, could someone please furnish me with a link to info on the Cisco thing? Looks interesting but Google´s not being all that helpful. And, as we all know, I´m a lazy, uncreative bastard.

Others of us with foresight were barely born 20 years ago. Of course any sort of sight other than shortsight has always been a rare resource indeed.

After reading about IFR in Accushot´s post I just had to Google it. This is a fairly decent resource for anyone who might be interested. As far as the point regarding an imminent crisis goes, well, it´s really not so rosy. We´d be lucky if governments and big businesses spend five years or so publishing their own studies which purport to falsify whatever original study (or group) made the doom-and-gloom proposition. A more likely scenario is that people will keep on debating and debating until one side is proven correct ten years later. If the glomers turn out to be right, it´ll be too little, too late. It´s not all bad news though. The more powerful car manufacturers (Toyota and Honda) have at least tried investing money in SULEVs and hybrids. Both these types of vehicles offer the benefits of low fuel consumpion and low emission. Granted, it´s more of a stopgap measure than anything, but what with all the research into hydrogen fuel-cells going on now, that´s really all we need. Of course this is only useful if people buy the cars so equipped by the manufacturers - something which has yet to occur on any significant level - and, if they use a hybrid, draw on a power source provided by non-fossil-fuel-burning plants (which, in some places, is unlikely). Still, there is hope. With gas prices as high as they are, economical cars and trucks should become more popular (should, not will). I wouldn´t be surprised if some companies started to apply LEV technology to larger vehicles more and more aggressively (if on a more limited scale, of course). The North American car companies, those with a heavy focus on guzzlers, have been unprofitable for years now. Hopefully they will see the writing on the wall and embrace the same technology as the Japanese. That would buy a at least a bit of time. Oh, and I do have to apologize to Spanner for my disturbing lack of creativity. I was going more for the whole "imitation is the sincerest..." feel, but I guess some people get used to insults so they just can´t help but post a comeback. Edited by - Aliens! <img src=´http://i6.photobucket.com/albu…ensAaaahaliens/humour.jpg ´> Or, it´s supposed to be humour. I like a lot of Carlin´s stuff but I have to admit that this one didn´t get so much as a smirk out of me. I suppose that´s because it´s really nothing more than a semantic game. Yes, the physical PLANET isn´t going anywhere, but if we´re not careful it´ll end up looing a whole helluva lot more like Venus than Earth. So no one is going to "save the planet" per se, there´s no Death Star bearing down on us, ready to blow us all to smithereens, but people do want to keep the Earth a place viable for life.

WOW! Good spot, that. Have you considered joining Mensa?

Oh, now I get it. We´re just supposed to have low standards so no-talent hacks like Lucas can pander to us in the cinema and then fleece us at the supermarket when the kid decides he just has to have the new General Grievous toy? Wow. Great idea.
