I believe AVG is good and I do use it along with McAffee, but the AVG free version is about to go away... Currently trying AVAST and it does look good.

Maybe try replacing that dll file - C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\DLLS\BIN - that's the location, and maybe - just maybe - it's corrupted?
