H BD At this point you could tell us how much MS did pay for using your name for the game. As we all know you had this name before the game even existed So: how much ?

It´s not a virus but it looks like ... I have here a funny little screensaver you can install on - let´s say: your dad´s PC - and he might think he got a terrible PC-disease: it looks like someone had breathed from the inside of the screen on the glass. The little Program is called "Blur" and you can download it here Just give the screensaver some minutes to take full effect you can edit the effect too Edited by - zazie on 10/12/2005 12:28:55 AM

As a short summary: the Drake Equation is a formula combining several factors to estimate how many intelligent communicating civilisations are in our galaxy. You can play with parameters of probability and the factors here . Off course this is an interesting speculation - and though I am sceptical I think it is probable that there is some life somewhere else in our Galaxy. Hopefully even intelligent life unlike on Earth . But: there is a parameter that lets puff the idea of "communicating" like a ... soap bubble. In e=mc2 c is the "Speed of light". This parameter is not a theory but a fact. So how should communication work with a intelligent, communicating society 3´000 light years away ? Off course this question has been asked many times before. The "Believers" have different pattern of answers: - tachyon - there are physics beyond the light speed barrier - anti matter - there is a world beyond the knoen physical galaxies - telepathy - direct non-physical communication from brain to brain (Don´t blame me on the details, just summing up roughly.) All those patterns for a theory have one thing in common: Humanity doesn´t know that technology now. And it is for the least unsure if we will know it as a technology in the near future. (And look at the average values in the Drake Equation: their default value for "the planet´s life during which the communicating civilizations survives" is 10´000 years. Yeahh. lol. On a sideline: Do you believe humanity could survive as a communicating civilization another 9950 years ? back to topic - and back to facts: the probability that existing forms of inelligent life could communicate within a galaxy is extremely small. With substantial rate of probability for intelligent lifeforms MY formula (off course this is pure speculation too) only gives 0.02 % of probability that there is another intelligent and communicating species in our galaxy. Now out there somewhere, they just must have the same rhythm of civilization. If they have 100%, we remain at 0.02 % probability of contact. But maybe their communicating phase ended at the times of Hiob ??? Or will begin in 25´000´000 years ? If you have read all this then you might understand why I think the Drake Equation is a nice toy for an interesting debate of some friends round a table with a bottle of wine (or two). But it is not suitable for a scientific debate. EDIT: Damn [ - brackets Edited by - zazie on 10/12/2005 12:06:37 AM Edited by - zazie on 10/12/2005 12:09:51 AM

Ooops - You DO have Steam installed. I was wrong then

I ain´t payin´ through Steam, I can tell ye

<font face=´trebuchet ms, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica´ size=2> I read here: "I ain´t playin´ through Steam". Small difference in writing, big difference in meaning. Sorry. I thought you don´t want to install steam. Like me. But in this case it´s another story. Edited by - zazie on 10/12/2005 12:31:18 AM

Now that´s a new one! Must be weird but funny to play FL like this - lol. Sorry, more serious: Have you installed some special drivers with your mouse, like Logitech´s own drivers ? If so go back to standard Windows mouse driver; I heard that in other games (some first person shooters) such a change could help. Second possibility: I know that some Mods had difficulties running on your version of Windows. Try to run it in W98-compatibility mode.

About three months ago a FL-vet wrote in a thread here on TLR that he could not manage his 6600 to work with FL - that´s why he got back to his older card just to have the fun of playing Freelancer online. Now THAT is a fan, isn´t he ? Other 6600-users had success with different driver settings. And it may also help to read this thread

I do not have the knowledge to discuss the subject on a technological base - but I have recently read an article about an ongoing political debate on the US-controlled root-zone of the internet. On an international expert-conference in Geneva in the first days of October 2005 preparing the World Summit of Information Society there were severe controversies about "Internet Governance". China, Brasil, Iran, but also NGOs want a broader control of the root-zone. Their argument: it is against the idea of a universal net that one government could close it. Martin Boyle from the British Departement of Trade and Industry said his government feared that the "system" of internet could break if the central (i.e.US) control would change. And US Ambassador David Gross was "very disappointed". These statements are pointed at the ORSN (Open Root Server Network) and other ´concurrence´ for the 13 IANA-Root Servers (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority). Sources: Article 1 Article 2 (in German). I gave as much info as possible that you can google for english content on the subject. Personally I don´t think that China and Iran are the best witnesses for independency in the web you can possibly imagine (mullahs might have other opinions here ). But I don´t see any reason why the 13 IANA-Root-Servers should not been under the control of a supranational authority like the UNO. On the other hand if regional controls of the Root-Servers apply it is easier for governments to control access to sites and contents.

I speak about the steam-less installation - you never get connected to steam. There are (at least) two "cracked" versions around, one originally from a guy with an italian name (i forgot) based on a russian crack; the other one the so-called t****t-*1-steamless-fix. It works, but you need the game for installation (the other version is simply a crack with all files you need). That´s why I dare to talk about this kind of crack here (where even bp has a FL-No-CD-Crack ). * replace letters/numbers

Esquilax You know that there is a (all in all not too complicated) way of playing HL2 without Steam ? It works perfectly for me. If you want details write me an e-mail. @ everybody: Just to make it clear: I am not promoting something illegal

In another thread Argh suggested to edit the weapons of Jumpgates killing even strongest ship/shield. That would be a de facto closed JG. For Jump Holes you had to create/edit some weapon platforms nearby. If you set the damage values high enough even the fastest freelancers in space would have to face zero-tolerance

You are right. This is often a statement like "I am a redneck and pruod of it". On the other hand I think many of those Confederalists want to make a statement "Against Washington" or "Against Administration" or the like than "For Slavery".

i´ll have you know that the Tawakalnistan Aerospace Industries Mk XXIV *al-Haddji* Surface-to-Air Interceptor missile reached 3,500feet with a 1lb payload, and the partially-completed Al-Haddji 2 (which I may rename the al-Madina ) is designed to reach 5000feet with a 2lb payload.

<font face=´trebuchet ms, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica´ size=2> About 10 years ago I made a reportage about people who build and start "toy-rockets" as a hobby (I worked as a radio-journalist). I was impressed. The smallest fully functional rocket (with parachute) was very much looking like a pencil. But this small object could fly almost 100m high. The biggest rocket I have seen was about the size of Taw´s MKXXV. For contests (longest flight, highest flight, most precise landing of the little parachute-pilot (!!) etc.) they needed an understanding with the ground and air control.

I was heading to the younger generation - but don´t worry, i am older than you

No offence here, guys (and gals) Most of your repertoire of classical music here is limited to a "The most popular classical music of all times compiled for a romantic candlelight dinner" - which is veeery ok. My point is different: After reading your posts i am quite sure that some of you have never/long time not been in a classical concert. Personally I love Hard-, Metal -, Prog-, Art Rock (remember ??), Techno and so on. But to hear the tremendous power of a symphony orchestra in 12m distance or the incredible boost of a big pipe organ beats ANY PA-System. Maybe the sound engineer FOH makes the sound louder than an Orchestra. But the dynamics never are the same. Believe me: go and listen. It will be an unforgettable experience. Oh, and your reputation as computer-addicted could positively change at your possible parents-in-law

My belly proves I am an expert on food @ FD and Indy: the bright red colour is not a sign of quality for lamb (talking here first about the surface). It can even be a sign for chemicals used to give the customer this "freshy" impression (in combination with a blue-spectre daylight lighting inforcing red colors). Meat surface reacts chemically with air (oxidation) and the natural colour of lamb is a quite dark red with about 10 % of brown in (that´s my personal estimation - nothing else ) . The colour is more Bordeaux than Burgundy - btw: both are excellent with lamb though I prefer the Bordeaux here. On a sideline: bright red meat means more muscle and less ´storage´ (butcher keeps meat and takes care=better taste) of the meat. That means: longer cooking and not suited for barbecue. About fat: A lot of people may like lamb but hate mutton. So lamb is the better choice for a party. But if you want to put chops on your barbecue then choose the ones with the whitest fat (as little yellow/brown colour mixed in). That´s a sign for a young (and tender ... yummi) mutton chop.

There is an other upcoming space-sim game with promising features: Darkstar One ( Link . The features show that the game will place itself "somewhere in the middle" between FL and X2. They promise "Special missions, for example in canyons, on the surface of planets or inside of planets". But there will be no Multiplayer-part (Source: fansite Darkstar-network) Publisher is the German Ascaron company. Daniel Dumont has published there the games "Patrizier 1&2" (no idea if this was published in English too). Reason why I mention this here: This game had a fully functional dynamical trade system. It´s not a space sim of course, but you have to trade for getting credits to build up your home city and colonies. Quite an interesting game btw.

Don´t want to repeat already mentioned big names (though I have to say that Mozart would never be on my list - too much functional music ; i.e. muzak of his time). I am switched on - Beethoven. Just after J.S.Bach I´d like to add some more: Jean Sibelius (1865 - 1957) best known for his Karelia Suite - If you ever have the chance to listen to it in a live concert, do it. If you prefer Rock to Classics the you MUST know one of the different versions Keith Emerson (and The Nice) played the Ouverture to Karelia Suite. Just great. György Ligeti (1923 - ) Ligeti writes some of the most emotive music of the 20th century. His Lux aeterna was used for 2001 - A Space Odyssey (Second Main Theme, the other one was Strauss´ Donau-Waltz). But listen to Lontano - the perfect Soundtrack for a trip into outer space (I will not make comparisons with any drug-experience here nor give advice ) Ligeti is not only cosmical but also comical. One of the rare composers in 20-century-classical-music with humour Krzysztof Penderecki (1933 - ) I am completely atheist, Penderecki is MUCH catholic and actually working on a Polish Requiem in memory of Pope JPII (omg ). But: Penderecki did not write "Spirituals" but some just great, impressive and emotional music. Listen to "Stabat Mater" for three choirs - with the most astonishing final chord in D Major you probably ever have heard. A word about "an arrogant, self-obsessed, narcissistic, mysogynist, elitist pr*ck of gargantuan porportions..." - Wilde created a classic ! You´re right on Wagner. But even a complete @sshole can write great music. I´d even say: the percentage of "arrogant, self-obsessed, narcissistic, mysogynist, elitist pr*cks" among composers/movie makers/artists in general is much higher than anywhere else. You want examples ? Robbie Williams, Madonna Louise Ciccone, Ritchie Blackmore; Alfred Hitchcock, W.C.Fields, Marlon Brando; Edit: Spelling Edited by - zazie on 10/3/2005 4:32:59 AM
