Hey drokmed! Its good to see a new player come to the game.

The capabilities of light fighters on modded servers are different from mod to mod. Some are fairly anemic and are thought of as a step in the ladder to actually being able to afford one. On other servers, light fighters aren't quite so weak. If you were flying a LF, stick to the HF's tail and stick there like glue. If he manages to shake you, avoid frontal passes. If it is unavoidable you dodge like crazy and put yourself in a good position to get behind him. Rinse and repeat until you've finally worn him down.

A good tactic to learn is the engine kill. If you are using the standard FL keyset, press "z" and you can turn letting your inertia carry you in the same direction. You can tap the thruster to make adjustments to the direction in which your ship is flying.
