Make sure you hit your cruise engines right at the beginning. Hovis will take a lead even so. Keep your eye on the next gate. Miss one and it's over.

A good game can stay good for a long time. For example, I recently took out my old X Beyond the Frontier CD and started playing it again. That game came out in 1999 - which is ancient by PC game standards. Still, I've been having blast with it. I'd also forgotten how much Freelancer is derived from it.
Now FL is a much more interesting game than XBTF, in which the action is very slow in comparison. Notice that new folks are still discovering FL and getting hooked on it. I expect FL to be around in some shape or form for many more years.

I've never liked the race and thought it didn't belong in the game. Still, there is no way around it. At first, I'd lose every time. I'd miss a gate and that was it. Then I sort of fell into a pattern of hitting every gate without trouble. Hovis messes up near the end, so if you make all of the gates you'll beat him.
One good thing about the race: it is the only one in the game!

FL won't die. Look at Elite. Elite came out in 1984, yet it's still got a following. In fact, I just saw this on Wikipedia:
<< A new sequel, Elite 4, is currently in a lengthy development phase which started in 1998 and is 5 years overdue from its original scheduled release date. It is not currently scheduled for release, with Braben stating that full production will commence after the release of The Outsider. The Outsider is expected to be released by Christmas 2009. >>
Wish someone would spend that much time on a sequel to FL.

Since you were a pirate before, maybe you can just steal a new ship. I've never seen any guards around them on the bases.

In the vanilla game, sometimes Nomad ships leave behind Nomad guns, sometimes they don't. You're at a high enough level, so it's just a matter of luck. Keep at it.
Oops ... how did I manage a double post?

Whatever is going on, it's fascinating to try and figure out. Sort of like Trent getting bits of information as the game proceeds.

Yeah, but us "old guys" had fun with a lot of great games before the young folks were even born.

Cheers!

The one really irritating thing about the old Privateer game - which was sort of an early version of Freelancer - was that ships moved as if they were sliding around on a table. It hardly felt realistic.
Seems to me you can roll in Freelancer though. Let me go check ...

Play the "vanilla" game through at least once, just for the fun of it.
One tip to make it more interesting. Just because Juni radios and says she wants you to meet her somewhere, you don't have to drop everything and go. Explore around, fly some missions, make some money or do whatever you want. Juni will wait. Let her!

Ommagawd, I see I'm a recruit. I'd already been recycled to the Academy as a cadet. What's next ... civilian? :o

Hi, Rankor. Lots of luck on your marriage and all.

I mean they've probably got a pretty good idea who did it. But if they accuse someone and can't really prove it, they might get sued.
-
Presumably, the poobahs know who it was. They may not be able to prove it though and naming names might lead to legal problems.
Just a thought ...

Hadn't even noticed the ranks are back. Wonder how many posts it takes to become a Nomad.

-
I suppose I should. All they can do is say yes or no.
I was surprised at many of the negative comments on the Wikipedia entry. So the game isn't perfect. Well neither am I!

Hmmm ... no link on Wikipedia and a note not to add links! Says to submit a link, if you think it's useful. I'd say this site is.

Is there a link to this site on the Freelancer Wikipedia page? Would it be allowed?
I'll go check ...

Homeworld 2? Ack ... I give up in frustration on that game. I could never get Captain Sobhan to leave the #$%@!! station when I rescued him. I must have tried 20 times and he still wouldn't leave.

I suppose the Homeworld 2 mod would have to have a fatal flaw in it too.
