The asterisk (*) means that there are more bases/objects in that vicinity of space that aren´t showing up because you are not zoomed in (the map can´t fit all the names in one spot). Zoom in on those locations and you will see there are more bases in that area. Those are my thoughts, not yours, I´m WapCaplet[!

Kodakmoment, Do you realize you just spoiled the existence of **EDIT** Planet and a **EDIT** Planet? So for those people who never knew about them, it has now been spoiled because you mentioned them. I think that is somewhat ironic... **EDIT - Kodak removed those references, so I have aswell. It´s all good...*** The problem is that the term "spoiler" has as many definitions as there are people... Those are my thoughts, not yours, I´m WapCaplet[! I suppose, theorhetically, you could select the furthest waypoint in your current system and then hit F2 and let your ship take itself there. But that could take a while. (I mean selecting the final jump gate waypoint, not simply the NEXT waypoint. Doing this would take you right to the jump gate, albeit quite slowly). I find it interesting that people even WANT the autopilot feature. I mean, we haven´t really had that feature in other flight-sim/space-sim games, have we? Wing Commander still required that you take manual control of your ship at some points, same with all flight sims. Manual control is a FEATURE! If the box said "Automatic Flight!! Never worry about controlling your ship again! The game plays the game for you!!" no one would buy it. Well, I wouldn´t, anyway. Those are my thoughts, not yours, I´m WapCaplet[!

First of all, it NEVER hurts to try in situations like this. The worst that can happen is they say no and you are in the same position. However, that being said, I think it is pretty unlikely that MS would replace a "missing" disk. Perhaps if it were damaged or corrupt, but if you are unable to produce the disk, it could be tricky. You´re best bet is to write a letter, and offer to return the box, manual, and store receipt in exchange for a new copy. I would think their main concern would be in verifying that you did purchase the game in the first place. The box, manual and receipt would go a long way toward proving that than if you simply ask them to replace a CD you lost. So, I say go ahead and try, but you may have to work for it. Also, it could be useful to contact the store you purchased it from. Perhaps they have a gurantee or refund/return policy. It´s tricky with software, but you never know... I am an IT Security Analyst in an Internal Audit department and we have this sign on the wall that says "Arguing with an Auditor is like wrestling with a pig in mud. After a while, you realize the pig enjoys it." I think threads like this one can be likened to that statement. I´ll let the more perceptive of you figure out the connection. At any rate, I find the thread entertaining and thought I would add my thoughts: There are three "sticky" messages at the beginning of this forum, very clearly indicating that they should be read by newbies. If someone posts a question that is covered in those messages, then NO I don´t think they should be flamed for asking the question, but YES it shows disrespect for the forum and the rest of the people here. Please read those messages. They are not there for decoration. The other posts that bother me are the unannounced spoilers. I don´t flame someone if they post a spoiler, but I do ask them to repost it in the spoiler forum. This is simply because spoilers can wreck the game for some people, some even consider spoilers a form of cheating. Doesn´t really matter though, to each their own, but that´s why there is a spoiler forum. So, I agree that we should NOT flame people who post silly questions or inappropriate comments, but I also find it disrespectful when people post a question that is clearly covered in the manual or "sticky" messages, and especially when they post a spoiler. But it´s not worth flaming... Anyway, as always... Those are my thoughts, not yours, I´m WapCaplet[!

No one said it was impossible or difficult. We just stated that the enormous size of a realistic system/galaxy/universe would make the game useless. You must really try to grasp the sheer enormity of space. It wouldn´t be as easy as just flying to a planet and docking at a base with everyone else. Your ship, in comparison to the planet, would be a speck. The planet itself, in comparison to the rest of the galaxy would be smaller than a speck. It IS possible, but dogfighting would be done with. Dogfighting does NOT happen in real space. Space is too big and the ships would be travelling WAY too fast. You can´t just "scale" everything down. It doesn´t work that way. If DA made the game as realistic as real space, no one would play it. Anyway, it´s a moot point. I think there are just some people out there who cannot even begin to understand how phenominally big space really is. You could literally travel at 5 times the speed of light for a thousand years and not encounter ANYTHING. It´s really, really big. And Freelancer fighters are really, really small in comparison. It would not work. Those are my thoughts, not yours, I´m WapCaplet[!

The game wouldn´t play anywhere remotely the same. Changing the scale of the speed and distances would have a PROFOUND effect on gameplay. There would no longer be ANY dogfights. Try to imagine dogfighting at over 10000kph. The main issue is the vastness of space. If the distances and speeds are increased but the size of the ships themselves are kept the same, then no one would ever see each other unless they picked each other up on scanners. And then it would take great focus to eventually end up in the space vicinity of space. Flying around in space is NOT at all the way it is depicted in these games. And that is NOT a bad thing. Anyway, I could go on and on (as we all continue to do). I just wanted to point out that the game would not play the same if you simply changed the scale of the distances and speeds. It doesn´t quite work that way. I think the problem is that we really have no way to wrap our heads around the unbelievable vastness of space. Imagine that your ship is a speck of dust and space is the ocean. Try to imagine navigating and the amount of time and effort it would take to FIND anything. Sure, you could use scanners and such, but moving at incredible speeds would just make it even more difficult to find and and engage in combat with another speck of dust. Now to put it in perspective, imagine your ship is still a speck of dust but the ocean is actually a million times bigger. You get the idea... Those are my thoughts, not yours, I´m WapCaplet[!

I find a good way to avoid the line-ups is to simply steal the jump gate. I attach an industrial strength titanium reinforced cable to the jump gate and then activate my power thrust booster engines and tug the gate somewhere less "busy". The only problem is if you get caught hauling the thing around: "Freelancer Alpha 1-1, this is Liberty Patrol. Mind if I take a look in your....WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!?!?!" Those are my thoughts, not yours, I´m WapCaplet[!

Not sure EXACTLY what you are referring to, but the zoom in feature is on the Nav-Map. You can click anywhere on the map and select the icon that looks like a magnifying glass with a plus sign in the middle. This will "zoom-in" to give you a more accurate view of that part of the system. Handy for sorting out the number of bases that sometimes are found clustered at trade lane junctions and planets. Perhaps you are referring to something else though. I find it very surprising that you would have made it that far through the game without noticing that feature. Those are my thoughts, not yours, I´m WapCaplet[!

But even with the way I did it orginally, the cargo space itself would only be 10 meters long X 5 meters wide X 5 meters tall in the Humpback. You could even say the humpback is 40 meters long and 10 meters tall. That means that less than 15% of the humpback itself is for cargo space and the other 85% is for the systems you mention. If that were the case (and from looking at the size of your pilot in relation to the rest of the ship, it seems that the ship itself is still only about 20 meters long), let´s give the humpback the benefit of the doubt and say it´s 40 meters long. That would make the transport ships still 10 times longer and that´s not including any of those systems for the transport itself, which would just make it even longer. No matter how you do the math or figure the dimensions, based on the way they appear in the game, there is no way those transports should be capable of carrying 800,000 units of cargo and the humpback can only carry 250. The math alone shows that the transport is capable of carrying three thousand and two hundred TIMES more than the humpback. It doesn´t add up when you compare the sizes of the two vehicles. For the math to work, the transport would have to be CONSIDERABLY bigger OR we would have to assume that the humpback is using less than 0.5% of its total capacity for actual cargo and the other 99.5% is for ship systems. I wouldn´t call that a freighter... Anyway, it seems obvious that the transports are not as big as they should be. They either need to be bigger OR their cargo capacity needs to be considerably reduced. Those are my thoughts, not yours, I´m WapCaplet[!

Well, since posting that first question, I have played MUCH Freelancer and have learned all about trade routes. I made a little over $450,000 yesterday doing runs from Colorado to Edinburgh. In my opinion, trade runs are totally worth it, and FUN!! Nothing like the challenge of trying to take a full hold of goods from one end of space to the other, fighting off pirates and hackers while desparetly racing to reach that next trade lane or jump gate. Much fun. To answer your question about the colored dots, they indicate what kind of "deal" you are getting. Generally, if a commodity has a red dot in the seller´s window, it means that that commodity is over-priced at that location. IE, you would be able to find that commodity cheaper somewhere else. Yellow indicates that it is still over-priced, but not as bad as red. Green indicates that you are generally getting a good deal. Although there might be lower prices elsewhere, overall, you aren´t getting hosed. As for your screen, the colored dots indicate how good of a deal you would get if you SOLD that commodity at that location. That is why the color is opposite of the seller. Let´s take an example (made up, no spoiler). Say you are on Planet Manhatten and the commodity trader lists Luxury Food for $1350. And let´s say it appears with a red dot. That means that Luxury Food is overpriced at this location and you could certainly find it cheaper somwhere else, say, at Planet New London. Basically, the red dot indicates "bad deal, don´t buy!!". The same commodity, Luxury Food, would show up with a green dot in your screen if you currently owned some though. Why? Because Planet Manhatten is obviously the best place to sell that commodity! If $1350 is the highest price anywhere for Luxury Food, then selling it at Manhatten will make you rich!! Does that make sense? Basically, it´s an indicator of how good of a deal you are getting. In the commodity seller window, it indicates whether an item is over-priced or not, when you buy it there. In your cargo hold window, it indicates whether or not you are getting a price for selling it there. Generally, you want to buy green items and then sell them at a base that lists them as red. Or another way to look at is to only "deal" with green items. That is, buy green items and then once they are in your cargo hold, only sell the green items (green on your list). Keep in mind however, that this is only a general rule and you may still be able to make a decent profit when buying a red or yellow item, just as long as you can find another base that will buy it back from you for even MORE credits. Trading is totally where it´s at. Until I can afford a better fighter and become a pirate. Arrr matey.... Those are my thoughts, not yours, I´m WapCaplet[!

In my opinion, and it´s only mine, I think that if people take this GAME that seriously, then their priorities in life are a little out of whack. It´s a game. The announcement was meant in fun. It´s all entertainment. That being said, it´s obvious that everyone has their own opinion, to which they are all entitled. I do not mean to offend anyone, I do not mean to put anybody down. I am merely expressing my opinion. I constantly hear people rant about "this is a Freelancer Fan Only site". I do not understand why someone would even be here if they didn´t like the game. I don´t think they should leave or anything, it just boggles my mind that someone would waste their time and energy posting complaints about a GAME on a website dedicated to that GAME. Whatever. I´m sure the rants will continue, it just baffles me. I wouldn´t even think of going to a Barbie site to post my comments about how I hate Barbie dolls and playing with them is boring, etc, etc. What´s the point? So maybe not everyone thought the announcement was funny. That fact of the matter is Freelancer is a GAME!! It is a form of entertainment, leisure time activity, FICTION. It is not real life. It´s purpose is to provide fun and entertainment. That´s it. If you take it so seriously that you are upset about a fake announcement ON APRIL FOOL´S DAY (hello??), then you have missed the point of the GAME. In my opinion... And remember, those are MY thoughts, NOT YOURS. I´m WapCaplet. Edited by - WapCaplet on 02-04-2003 00:10:14

Here´s the thing. Seems to me that most people found it funny. I know I did. Therefore the majority of people were entertained by it, had some fun with it, generally it was a positive experience (except for EB, whom we all are going to kill) For those select few who were offended or put off or thought it wasn´t funny enough or whatever, I think you must come to the conclusion that the main factor in preventing you from enjoying the humorous nature of this announcement, is YOU. You can rant and rave all you want, but the fact is that MOST people thought it was funny. And really, that´s the definition of a joke. If enough people think it´s funny, then it is. That´s how you measure funniness. There is no equation or set of "rules". If I tell a joke and people laugh, then it was funny. If someone tells a joke and everyone laughs except YOU...well, you figure it out. "He who laughs last, probably didn´t get it." -Anon Those are my thoughts, not yours, I´m WapCaplet[!

Clans continue to baffle my mind. I have not, nor am likely to ever be part of a clan. My friend and I set up a nice size LAN party at his office once. There were the two of us and about 5 or 6 of our friends who enjoy the occasional gaming session. In addition, one of our friends had invited a group of people he sometimes games with. This "group" turned out to be one of these so-called "clans". So there were about 14-16 of us gaming, playing CounterStrike or something. At any rate, this stupid clan took over and managed to kill everyone else in mere seconds, again and again and again and again. It was unbelievably frustrating. I asked them how often they game and the average was about 4-6 hours per DAY!!! OMG!! And they didn´t seem to be having any fun. It was simply point and kill and start over. Eventually we shut the whole thing down, not because we were losing, but because the constant losing to this unrelenting clan was the complete opposite of fun. Maybe some of you would say we were poor losers, but the comparison would be like a parapalegic playing a little one-on-one with Michael Jordon. Can you see the fun? Niether can I. Anyway, please tell me all "clans" are not like that. These guys were arrogant pricks whose lives seemed to revolve around playing games. No, not "playing" games, winning them. At all costs. Even at the cost of fun. I won´t even begin to discuss the complete lack of social skills... Anyway, there´s my rant on clans based on a one-time experience. Please tell me clans are not so flippin´ annoying. As always... Those are my thoughts, not yours, I´m WapCaplet[!

Whatever your definition of a joke is, you cannot deny the masses. If the majority of people found this announcement to be humorous in the end (as I did), then it was funny. I think it was clever as it played on all our rantings over the past weeks about improvements we´d like to see. I enjoyed it in the end (because I was fooled for a moment too) and it sounds like the majority of people were able to smile when all was said and done. So for those select few who are trying to "inform" the rest of us what a joke´s true definition is, please RELAX. First of all, Freelancer is a GAME. It´s not real life. It was designed for one purpose, FUN. And the faux announcement was designed for the same reason, FUN. So chill out and stop trying to "explain" the non-joke-ness to us. Taking "jokes" that seriously is inherently ironic. Anyway, I just needed to get that off my chest. What´s the big deal, after all? It was all in fun, and most people ended up thinking it was funny. Well, now that I have read over my post, I´m sure I´ve started something...sigh... As always... Those are my thoughts, not yours, I´m WapCaplet[!

Just my opinion, but I think a game with TRUE newtonian pysics and a space environment with TRUE distances and object sizes, would be incredibly boring, unless you´re an aspiring astronaut. The age old pilot quote comes to mind, but altered for space travel: "99.999% utter boredom, 0.001% sheer terror" Space is really big. I mean, really, really, really big. In a universe of accurate size and physics, you would literally spend years exporing without finding anything except gaseous anomolies and micro-meteors. Dog fighting in space would never happen. It would be incredibly inefficient and time consuming. Anyway, as always... Those are my thoughts, not yours, I´m WapCaplet[!
