Freelancer, 12 years old this past March. I still pay the game, not as much as I used to but, there's not a week that goes by, I don't. I have a lot of good memories though. I can't remember everyone that I've run into, (old age catching up with me) but, I do remember and can see where a lot of those times have faded away when I open my Freelancer Account Manager. Of all the accounts I've created for the multi-dozen characters I've used, many of them are still stored in that application. All I have to do is, click on an account, look to the right side of the page where I can see all my characters names listed, with each server they were on and the memories return, however, many of them are no longer available anymore. Even so, I haven't deleted those characters from that list of accounts. Memories are stored in them and all the good times I've had playing Freelancer.

I've yet to install Freelancer on my W7 due to the complications I've run into over the years of trying but, I have it installed on other XP systems I have without fault. Multiple installs for all the different Sp/Mp, mods/servers I've played and joined as well. Even my bookmarks list in my browsers, still have websites I used to visit but, nowadays when I click on one, it comes up empty for they are no longer available. Saddening to see.

With all that said, as the title reads, I'll never forget all the death & destruction I caused and all the good (bad) players I've come to know over all those past years playing the game.

I'm on Steam a lot now and whenever I see a familiar name that reminds me of those days when playing Freelancer, I always ask that player/member if, they've ever played the game to see if they are one of those players of long ago and in hopes of reflecting on some of the times we had. Many times, that hope & dream, fails. Many times, when I mention the game, often, their reply is that they've never even heard of it. :(

All that being said, Freelancer will never fade, as long as, I have mods and my computers to play it on. It's still fun in single player and multiplayer when I choose to go online. Less multiplayer due to W-XP not being supported but, I have yet to have any issues with it every since. There's not been a Space Sim created that is, as good as, Freelancer and to me, there never will be.

It's also a shame that all the people that have played it for all these years, don't log in to vote for just any Freelancer mod now. If they would, interest may return when so many others visit to vote for any other mod.

Whenever someone asks me what my favorite game is and I tell them, 'Freelancer' they've not even heard of it these days. It's not gone yet. :)

This is good news. Good going, OP. Great the read about how successful this game has been since, it was dumped 12 years ago. Well, let's say 10 since M$ closed the servers down. Recognition on great mods is even better. :)

IMHO of why Discovery is so popular is, all the original server files are left intact so, anyone can run a server and play it the way they want it to be played by the indicidual and at any time you wish to go elsewhere, there's 15-20 Discovery servers to choose from and you don't have to change mods in order to change game play. This offers you, RP with strict rules, RP with less restrictions, Rp/PvP for fun no matter your faction alignment, No RP at all, a place to just relax and hang out with friends or, time to just enjoy the mod itself for what it is and nothing else. Discovery is credited mostly for it's availability to be hosted more-so by the individual than anything else.

Another thing is, you can play on a server that's hosted in your language than just in the English language so all can understand your game play. That's a restriction that's hard to deal with, especially if you don't speak the language the sever is operated by. Many server require that you speak English only and with that, and it being the only server out there, players are going to go where they aren't restricted as to what language they can and cannot speak. You must take language as a barrier for the amount of game play a server gets as well. I would much rather play on a server where 90% of all players speak English than 90% of all players are speaking German, Chinese, French, etc..etc... and Discovery makes that possible. I would also like to add that, Igiss has allowed others to make certain modifications to Discovery to allow it to be more of a challenge than it's original creation like, -=[Discovery of Discovery]=- modded by He||oween.

I'm not saying it's the best mod/server but, that it has more of an advantage than others due to the fact that it retains all files needed to host your own server for your type of gaming.

Well, I could go on but, I think I've posted a fair piece.

I play on the Underverse/SW:WT/Void mostly and FlyByU's when it was running. I have been on many servers though and have experienced most of the mods out there that are hosted on a server.

Well, this thread is too old for me to make a choice but, I would say that there are many mods out there to enjoy and many are MUCH better than Discovery ever will be. Disco has pawned so much from Freelancer's original design just to accommodate it's own purposes. Faction info has changed considerably and so have their abilities.

It wouldn't be fair for me to make a choice from the list above because, there's other mods out there that are just as good as those posted that have been left out. Many players don't even give them a chance and are hung up on one so much that, they've never left to find out for themselves just how many other mods are as good, if not better, than the one they're stuck on. Afraid, I guess? Many that play on Disco.gc, don't even know the story line or, half of the characters in the game, they just wanted to play Freelancer with their friends and jump in game having no idea as to what to do next so, they are lead around by the collar until they get used to it.

I understand how you feel when you've never been anywhere else and only know of one mod but, you can't claim that this mod or, that mod is the best when you haven't tried out any of the others yet.

Explore, isn't that part of being a Freelancer?

As for females playing Freelancer? I know of many than can kick butt, for real playing this game. 8o ;)

Been away and bored for years. Running win 7 64, will install FL again, open to suggestions, tips. Nothing compares to the joy I had in FL and other pilots.

Welcome back. There's a lot to see and explore out there now. Enjoy.
