This is version 2. I have pretty much figured out all of the steps that people will need to take to make their own planets of any dimensions at this point- it´s really not very hard. I´ll be releasing a set of standard templates tomorrow, along with directions about how to go about making your own custom worlds <img src=´http://www.wolfegames.com/Freelancer/Tutorial/PrettyPlanet2.jpg ´> Version 3: <img src=´http://www.wolfegames.com/Freelancer/BeautyShots/PrettyPlanetMk3_THUMB.jpg ´> Version 4: <img src=´http://www.wolfegames.com/Freelancer/BeautyShots/PrettyPlanetMk4_THUMB.jpg ´> Edited by - Argh on 10/19/2005 11:37:56 AM

I think that the ocean needs to be a deeper shade of blue on the next ones to be a bit more accurate (at least to people who´re expecting something to look like Earth), although I´ll be the first to say that I´m not going for true photorealism- there are a number of technical challenges in that regard that are going to take some work to resolve properly, unless I want to spend days on a single planet´s texturemap, which I don´t Basically though, what you´re looking at is <2000 tris for two spheres... it´s not quite perfectly round, and if you get really close you can see the facets, but it´s surprisingly nice for the polycount.

Argh, I spent quite a lot of time on an arid planet, tho it needs an atmosphere to soften it, or I could ´burn´ the tex a bit.. its earth sized but I used modified NASA high res images of Venus and played with overlaps and merging and lots of stuff till I got what I wanted, if you are interested .. I can send you some jpg´s, they may interest you. The planet is about 2k polys too... tho the texture is somewhat bigger Harrier Edited by - harrier on 7/11/2005 4:49:29 AM

Take a look at the example files, and feel free to email me if you´re stuck. It really isn´t very hard to get a planet built, trust me- what was a little tricky was getting it to be easy enough for just about anybody who can read and use a paint program to use

Argh, does FL automatically light the planet based on the suns position? Or do you need to darken half of the texture to make night on the other side.

What Louva said. Oh yeah, and you can add lights to a planetary surface via alpha-channels, if you want to- it´s fairly easy to do So we could do, say, glowing lava-worlds, etc., pretty easily.

Well, players with low-end video cards will not display DDS/TGA files over 2048/2048- the textures will show up as blank white. So I tend to not go over that size- that´s more than large enough, imho, to make whatever you want with a single skin anyhow.

Argh, I just wanted to thank you for this incredibly useful work you did with the PrettyPlanet project. Using this as a solid basis, and implementing as much I could into it, I´ve been able to produce this : <img src=´http://img280.imageshack.us/img280/3026/earth3hu.th.jpg ´> Edited by - FriendlyFire on 10/11/2005 2:42:27 PM

I just thought about something.... I saw on multiple planets some "light maps"... In fact these are maps that simulate lights coming from cities when you look at the dark side of a planet. Well I wondered Argh.. Do you know how to do this? I think it would add even more realism to the Earth.

Y´know, I was planning to talk about this soon anyhow, seeing how Silvik´s already doing it with his TIE Uni stuff. I just haven´t had time to get to Imperratodd´s alien cruiser-ish thing, where I was going to use this. Basically, we can use glowmaps with defined alpha areas in the FL engine. To do so, define a texture as DcDtEt. No Ec is required. Then define the colored alpha as a seperate DDS texture. Yes, we don´t have to use grayscale- just do the lights as a seperate Layer in Photoshop/GIMP/PSP and then cut/paste into a new, same-size picture with black as the background. With Pretty Planets, I definately plan to include colored alphas like that. Among other cool uses, you could define white areas under the "clouds", so that, viewed from the dark side, planets would appear to have gently-glowing areas where clouds are partially obscuring the light pouring out´ve hidden cities... pretty cool stuff. The uses of this can range from the subtle to the flamboyant. Best of all, this method makes it virtually impossible to goof up the amount of alpha being applied- what you see is what you get, basically. The only downsides are: 1. DcDtEtTwo doesn´t work. Tested. 2. It requires that an object have two different textures applied during every render. Which could get rather... expensive... in terms of framerate, if we´re talking about having 20+ objects on screen with Et textures. Pretty minor problem otherwise.

Great to know that! I´ll try it tonight with a picture I have that shows city light and world light (Like the blue-black light coming from the seas, etc...) and see how good it shows up. Do I have to redo the model and apply the texture to the Earth, or can I simply edit the mat file?

All you have to do is edit the MAT, and add another Texture node for the glowmap. Remember, Et´s can have color in them, and use the relative levels of white for their alpha- pretty slick, really, and very much easier to work with than grayscale maps. Works just fine with DXT1 with no mipmaps or alpha channels...
