No don´t wait for the DVD i promise unlike most movies this year it will be worth the money you spend. Besides decent box office could lead to a sequal.

I don´t actually remember them ever showing the series on Aus. television. Can the film be viewed without prior knowledge of the series, or would a viewer appreciate it more if they *were* familiar with the series?

I was in london´s west end on Tuesday night and accidentally stumbled onto Serenity´s celebrity premier. As shallow as this may be, the main girl was wandering around doing her press coverage and she is *hot*. Its getting rave reviews over here at the moment, which pleases me somewhat. I thought it would come out and just disappear with its cult following - but the critics are urging everyone to go see it, saying that its "refreshing". I´m especially chuffed for Joss Wheedon - its about time he got some decent recognition as a writer.

so this is Firefly the film, yeh? Firefly just didnt do it for me. I know Arch loved it, but it left me cold. I gave it a chance because the Archster is usually bang on, but to me it just looked the usual post-Industrial mélange of a crew in a rickety old spaceship, I´m sure I saw the same costumes and characters in Farscape and Andromeda and several other shows. And all those Buffy/Angel-esque brooding stares and banter, i kept expecting Faith and Xander to pop up, maybe Anja and Willow too for a bit of new-age adventuring on the island of Sappho. Serenity isn´t ringing any *must-see* bells in the Grand Mosque of Tawakalnistan.

I´ve gotta admit, although I found firefly watchable, I didn´t feel the need to watch it compulsively and subsequently only saw a couple of episodes before it was axed. However saying that, I do love the scripts to Buffy and Angel. Joss Wheedon´s writing has just the right blend of comedy and action to keep the viewer interested - not to mention an uncanny "finger on the pulse" type of quality that attracts score upon score of cult viewers. That coupled with the fact that even some of the harshest critics are saying that its intelligent and original, I am extremely intregued by this film.

as I didn´t like Buffy or Angel overmuch either, I´m hardly surprised that Firefly did nothing much for me. I´m not a fan of Joss Wheedon. My daughter loves his work, I find it´s just too much style, not enough content. first series Buffy was ok, after that it got silly and boring, how many times did she die? first episode Angel, a real gripper, after that it dragged, eventually i didn´t have a clue who was who or what was going on. how many times did he turn back to evil? and both series, in a effort to keep interest, turned to introducing new *hip with the kids* characters that meant nothing to me. The odd episode would eleicit a bot of interest in me, but as it went on both series just lost their way. it happens. I´m not saying any of them are *bad* - it´s not a value judgement. in fatc they´re very well made, excellent production values, clearly go down well with their target audience. But Firefly always struck me as being a fairly typical space-opera with a few quirky twists and some *hip* characters that seemed to be tailor-made for action figures, post-punky girls of a type that I´ve seen in numerous other shows and films. If it had been made by anyone else, would you have watched it? BG is far more to my tastes - much darker, much grimmer, and far less predictable. I find that to be real edge of the seat stuff (and for anyone who saw se2, ep10, you know what I´m talking about)

You´re right - if it was written by anyone else I would probably not even give it a second glance. But I´ve found Wheedon´s later work to be exceptionally good, the last season of buffy was outstanding - very apocalyptic. But that is besides the point I suppose, you´re right, Wheedon´s work is mainly about style and "action heros". I suppose thats why I like him, sometimes I crave for in-ya-face visual nonsense and he delivers. I like it in a similar way to how I enjoy John Woo or Michael Mann. That aside, Wheedon´s sense of humour is excellent and this often comes over in his scripts when allowed. On the subject of BG - I loved that series. Any news on season 2 yet? Will it be a UK release again? Is it already running in the US?

yes it´s been running in the us for the last 3 months, its up to ep 10 now, a two-parter. part 11 won´t be aired till January though (waaaah! sob sob) All I can say without giving too much away is that it´s excellent, seamlessly tied into series 1 and full of truly gripping drama, just as you think you´ve got a character pegged, they surprise you. And some interesting guest charcters too! you´ll be getting it next year on Sky, i couldn´t wait so I *acquired* them.

I´m presuming that was a dig against me... I was going to a musical ff, for my wedding anniversary, you don´t take a lumbering great 35mm camera with you to a west end musical - for one, they´d never let you through the door. And somehow I don´t think that my wife would have been happy if I´d foregone our anniversary to stand and take photographs of D-List celebrities and ex Big Brother contestants....its hardly art now is it.
