Just by reading your post, i can tell that i´m going to be very disappointed with this game. I don´t like the part where you said, "The lead designer (forgot name, think its Jorg ,) will design the game according to his own likenings". It look like Chris has no say whatsoever about this game anymore. And what about the 20 plot missions? I thought it was going to be a lot bigger than that. This isn´t going to be the game everyone was expecting. And that is very disappointing.

well, i might take a little time to respond to all that: while some may be dissapointed that joysticks will not be supported, i am far from shattered by this fact...i wouldn´t have used it anyway. they have clearly put a lot of thought into the ship control system, and if they feel that the mouse and the keyboard obsolete the joystick, then i congratulate them on a system well-made, and have no reason to believe that the game will be lacking anything with the loss of joystick control the neuronet seems pretty much like what we expected, but then there never were going to be many surprises. i think they´ve done a great job with their control interface. i love the neuronet for ship control and mouse for looking, targeting and firing combination It is a little unfortunate that chris roberts´ ambition will no longer prevail over freelancer, but by the time chris left, the game was already too far developed to change the vast majority of game aspects, so i think what we get will still be pretty much what chris had in mind i think the manual control system is great. from the way it is designed, it is clearly intended to supplement to neuronet with course and heading changes etc. rather than to replace the neuronet. while some may be dissapointed with this, i am not now to my description of how the control system works (correct me if ia m wrong sir ****soffalot): you have a central cross-hair which is the direction your ship is facing and, in most cases, moving, and then you have your looking and firing cross-hair. while the control key remains unpushed, the NN is responsible for changing the direction and course of your craft, but when the control key is depressed, the looking crosshair is responsible for heading changes. allow me to explain a little more: i suggest you have a look at the 4 1st person cokpit views in the older gamespot trailer, at 0:28, 0:34, and 0:41 0:28 is the most informing with regards to the manual flight control system, as with the other two, the craft is being controlled solely by the neuronet, and as control key is never touched, the mouse remains the look crosshair. in 0:28 however, we notice that that craft undergoes 2 or 3 minor course adjustments, and we can see the heading of the ship adjust slightly... once... twice, the second time a little more noticeably. each time an adjustment is made, a small octagonal outline appears in the centre of the ships heading, and with each course adjustment is made in the direction of the loking cross-hair, located slightly up and to the left of the octagon. now allow me to state my theory: i believe that the looking crosshair, once the control key is depressed, becomes the steering crosshair, and the direction and distance of the looking crosshair is from the central octagon determines the direction and speed of the adjustment. i would also suggest, in regards to the significance of the octagon, as well as providing a refernce point for the movement of the looking crosshair for manual control, i expect that if the looking crosshair responsible for course adjustments is placed somewhere within the octagon, no course adjustment will be made until the crosshair is moved outside the octagon again. i hope this all made sense, and as far as i am aware, that is pretty much the way it works a good little progress report there too. not finished the planets and upgrades yet, but finished the storyline...hmmm. now to a small matter that would greatly disturb come people (including me) - are you sure he said 20 storyline missions and not 200? 20 aint that much, especially considering various comments made earlier by chris roberts. i just hope they have butchered the storyline component after chris left. even so, the game will have a lot to offer, it is just a little dissapointing at the lack of linear structure for all those who like that kind of thing 15 or 20 ships you can buy? is that what andre said? the most recent microsoft release said 12 ships...of course it wouldn´t suprise me if there were the 12 (3 for each house, a fighter, a trader and the elite) and then a few more special ships, making for a total of around 15, maybe even 20 the space combat side of things sounds pretty special...flying at an angle and shooting in a different direction - sounds like fun =) AI and computer behaviour can make or break a game, so it´s nice to see they are taking it seriously they were just my thoughts To me, clowns aren´t funny. In fact, they´re kind of scary. I´ve wondered where this started, and I think it goes back to the time I went to the circus, and a clown killed my dad.

Dave: I´m sorry to hear that. Shlozza: They COULD have meant 20 missions were complete... Or, even if they did mean only 20 missions (I highly doubt, since that is FEWER than STARLANCER), there are still a LOT of non-plot missions. (Edit: I have sent an e-mail regarding the issue. I don´t expect a reply, however if I do get one, I will let you guys know!) Edited by - Tachyon15 on 5/20/2001 2:39:51 AM

I would say that was the 20 linear plot missions, not the random missions which from what I understand are infinate. Im not fussed about the lack of joystick support, the mouse will be cool on its own. Im just wondering how you tell the NeuroNet where you want to go? You know like I want to get closer to that cap ship? -------------------------- I like to talk about nothing as it is the only subject I know anything about.

you are all correct; there are an infinite number of randomly generated missions. what i was referring to was that people who prefer the linear mission structure with a linear storyline would be dissapointed if there were only 20 (which i too find hard to believe - i hope you get that reply). of course we can all still enjoy the infinite number of randomly generated ones To me, clowns aren´t funny. Yeah... Plus, the missions could be stretched out, where you don´t take them all at once... Magazine previews have said that it kind of appears around mid-game and doesn´t take place all at once. So it would actually seem way longer

Shlozza : the way you described NN and about controlling your ship with the Ctl key is right on. I couldn’t have said it better myself. =) Im pretty sure he said 20 plot missions. And im sure that he said there will be around 20 diff. Ships you will be able to buy. It’ll be kewl if the story will be stretched out. Andre told me that there will be no immediate need to fulfill your plot missions. You could put it off for as long as you want taking on other non plot based missions and upgrading your ship. System reqs: no I didn’t ask. The graphics were pretty tight and the best Ive seen on a space sim.

I didn’t bring a camera or camcorder. I didn’t download the demo but im sure the ingame flight is the same as when I played the demo. I don’t know where I flew. Just around I guess. Andre gave me a demonstration about the no load time while you are flying. You jumped to another system with a jump gate. I asked him how many systems there were. I think he said either 20 or 40. damn I forgot. Anyways he flew through a nebulae and there was no load time. He flew around a mining vessel mining in the nebulae. How did it look like?? It looked like space. Very pretty. I forgot to look at the ships though. I flew in cockpit view only.

Just a comment on the "20 or so plot missions". I really can´t remember how many there were in P2:TD. But I´m sure it was far less than 20. Perhaps about 10 maybe less... I´m sure stinger will be here soon to put things straight. in P2 they did spread it out heaps and it lasted okay (IMO). I reckon it will be fine. Specially with the bigger universe and generally more prospects. Thanks Jakoff! kumari --- "lest we forget..."

do you remember much about the avionics and HUD display? have they put in the radar yet? how does it work? were the shield and energy bars functioning? what about the little wireframe model in the bottom left corner? just curious as to how far they have got in the cockpit graphical avionics and another thing - i thought the explosions from the older gamespot trailer and the new e3 trailers looked - to be honest - pretty crappy. i know they have been through a number of different explosion graphics, but i liked the explosions in starlancer far more, so i assume they have not implemented the final explosion graphics. did you see any explosions of any kind in the demo? were they the same as those in the trailers, or have they improved them? personally, i like this one the most, and this one and even this one are better than those seen in the trailer, IMO just wondering To me, clowns aren´t funny. Tachyon: yeah.. well, sorry I wasn’t prepared. Wasn’t someone else, besides me, went to E3?? Damn.. does no one here live in southern California? Shlozza : Radar was in. I didn’t understand how to read it but it seems like the basic setup. you could see top bottom rear, etc.. and also the relative distance from them to you. About the shield bars and energy bars, I don’t think they were in the demo yet. Actually, I don’t even think the enemy was attacking me , just flying around. Wireframe model? I dunno. No explosions, just the puny ones you see when you destroy the fighters. Kumari: I think you’re right about P2 having less than 20 plot missions. You seems longer cuz its spread out, and in the meantime , you take on non plot missions.
