A Few Hidden Modder Tricks

After talking to Friendly Fire about a few tricks I discovered for modding Freelancer, he suggested the idea of starting a thread for other modders, as well as myself, to post pictures and information about tricks that they know that they've just been holding on to. Here's my trick;

[center]Combining Two or More Files Into One[/center]
You may ask why do this, well for several reasons. One, it allows Freelancer to load slightly faster. After combining the ship goods with the shiparch, it cut the load time down by .8 sec., then when I combined initialworlds, empathy, and faction_prop, it cut the load time down by 1.9 sec. Also, by combining these files, it makes it substantially easier to mod. There's one downfall to this that any larger TC mod designer will love; 3rd party programs don't like this that much. Here are some pictures of how I created all new .ini files.

You mean Fedora Linux? No thats Windows Vista. Well you can run Freelancer und Linux with wine, bu you need an expansion for wine which only works on debian and suse Linux.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I just set up my pc to dual boot fedora and xp. Those pages look remarkably like fedora pages. Sorry.

@Alfa Astrix: Can you give a few lines on how this "discovery" works? Your screenies tell some things but not alot. And what`s that "body_relfector" at the ca_pod_package?

Ok, open up your freelancer.ini, and scroll through it. You'll see a lot of things like:

Ships = ...
Goods = ...
Loadouts = ...

The "..." is the file path to where your .ini (and I'm testing something else now too) is. Creating "new" .ini's is easy. Just copy an existing one, delete everything in it so it's blank, rename it to what you want where you want, and in your freelancer.ini, make sure it's set as that kind of file type. If your new file has both the shiparch directories and the good directories for all your ships, then in freelancer.ini you have to have ship = "new File" AND goods = "same new file". Freelancer will load it as both. If you really wanted to, but i don't advise it even though I tried it, you can combine ALL the .ini files into one, and as long as every line in Freelancer.ini are directed to it, it works.

As for the "body_reflector" thing. Custom engine I made for the pod. It's so small, all the engine trails look bad on it, so I made a more fitting custom engine. That was the name of it.

2. linux can run freelancer server, in wine, however it cannot run client coz of native DX support is failing, theres something fishy there with fl and DX tho most games can work fine in vmware virtual machines, or some of them works fine eaven with wine, freelancer CANT.
(ps on top of his window it says notepad.exe .... it wold b strange for linux to run notepad wouldnt it b :P)
