You got it right on. <img src=smilies/icon_smile_wink.gif width=15 height=15 border=0 align=middle> Mouse support is majorly stressed in FL. So it makes an easier entry for newbies and opens a much larger audience. <img src=´http://www.lancersreactor.org/images/news/monkeydance.gif ´> -ph34r t3h m0nk3y- EB

I have a joystick, but I also like to use the mouse to play a space sim. But I really prefer to use a combination of the two <img src=smilies/icon_smile_big.gif width=15 height=15 border=0 align=middle> Hopefully FL will support both and no, I will not bring up <b>that </b>subject again <img src=smilies/icon_smile_wink.gif width=15 height=15 border=0 align=middle> <img src=´http://www.msnusers.com/mypicture?user=4263~4AAAqAAAAEmjXFs4wy5IB*FdWohIQJdAdeXO2ohCDaVDoHrse2ToLaEw$$~4AAArAAAAGV6mpsmIeuX6PheoDI1V!*5xWR15CLGcJ8ZM$ ´> &quot; What we do in life echoes in eternity &quot;

Sorry, but I´m definately ´old school´ about this. I started playing computer games when Mice didn´t exist. I started with keyboard, then moved up to a joystick when I could afford it. Hell, when I bought ´Elite´ for my beeb all those years ago, I had to build my own joystick analogue joystick out of a Quickshot digital and some pots from Maplins because I couldn´t afford a proper analogue. So, great, by all means have mouse support for the masses and so on, I may even find it helpfull for targeting. But when it comes to manual ship control, sorry. I want a joystick. I got me a MS Sidewinder forcefeed back, and I like it. It works. Its fun. And I can use it. AND it stays in one place without needing a desk the size of an A1 drawing board to be able to control things. I hope to God that DA/MS really do put in full joystick support, otherwise I´m gonna be severely disappointed personally. Andy

I prefer mouse control, namely because I cannot afford a decent joystick. It will add to a broader appeal, having a focus on mouse control. James Gallen, Smoking Monkey Studios This is the night. Relax, there should be support for both so nobody need to get their panties in a bind. Several interviews have quoted Jorg (among others) saying they intend or are working to put in joystick support. The coding to input joystick support probably wouldn´t take much longer than a week so just have some faith in the dev team. <img src=´http://www.boomspeed.com/colgreen/Elvis-Sig.jpg ´> Check out <A href=´http://www.geekorgy.com´ Target=_Blank>Geek Orgy</a>

I got to mention..... I´ve heard that there will be NO joystick support planned for the final release of Freelancer. So my panties are well and truely bound up already!!! And, looking back thru the Jorg Neumann interview, there was no mention of joystick support there.....ONLY MOUSE SUPPORT. So, gotto say that those who WANT joystick support, better make themselves known, and maybe we can ask Bargib to re-run his poll on ´game controllers´ to send back to DA. Andy

Face it, we really don´t have much say on whether there will be joystick control or not. The hardcore people who have been playing flight sims since before there were flight sims or whatever can get up on the box and speak their piece all they want, but they <i>are </i> the minority. For every person who would rather use a joystick, there are hundreds who could only use a mouse. I´m not saying they should leave out joystick control at all (frankly, the only reason I could care either way is if it would hurt sales much, and I don´t think it will) but whatever they decide, we have to live with, because even if they don´t tell us, they have a <b>legitament </b> reason whichever way they go. Like Hellcat (get yer ass on ICQ BTW) said, same discussion, but different people. By the way, Freelancer may not have full fledged joystick support, or any at all, (I honestly don´t believe that the pseudo-support that has been mentioned, that is using the joystick to aim but still not fly, is an option. If they put joystick support in, it will be real.) but theres nothing stopping you from binding your joystick to the keyboard buttons, like w-a-s-d (w for up, d for down, and so on) and still using it. It would be a little more hassle, but you can still probably find some way to use a joystick, even if a user-patch has to be made.

Woo-Hoo! I´m a minority!! I hear what you say guys, I do. There are hundreds of thousands of FPS and RTS style players out there who only EVER use mice. And so far all I have been able to do is read about the control system in pre-view articles, etc. And I *do* think that for autopilot/navigation type stuff, the mouse is going to be far superior. But (and this is a very PERSONAL opinion) every ´flight´ sim I´ve played, be it planet or space based has always used a joystick. I accept that such a precidence is no reason to continue using that means of control, but for me it has a certain ´rightness´ about it. Tachy, you say ´it´ll be possible to bind keys to the joystick´ if no native support is included, but that gives you pure digital joystick control, and that is AWFULL to use. My joystick has 4 axis of control; X,Y, rudder, and throttle, and ALL in unadulterated analogue. It is a beautiful thing to use. You can´t replicate such a range of movements, all together, on a Mouse ..... ever! It works in 2 axis at once, maximum (unless you can count the wheel thing.....urgh). And I gotto say, no matter HOW intelligent the A.I. in Freelancer, in multiplay, using the ´autopilot´ tracking option to follow your target....whilst you blast hell outta it in true FPS style crosshair action with your mouse, is not my idea of ´Combat´. With two machines both running Freelancer, they are BOTH going to use the same A.I. with no account taken of piloting skill, just speed on the ´point and click´. If you decide to go manual, then mouse is definately the poorer control option (for me), as it lacks flexability. So. Many poeple may not own a joystick, and may well be used to mouse control, but my feeling is give it a try. Its worth it. A far more immersive experience. Andy

Actually, you underestimate the amount of user input the neuronet will require. One NN user against another, and the one who takes advantage of different maneuvers and tactics will win. I´m all for having an opinion, but please get all the facts before you start going off about immersive experiances. Which human input device you use has very little to do with how immersive a game is. Otherwise, no game would be immersive, including Freelancer.

Sorry Tachy. You are right there. And I apologise for drifting off half cocked like that. All I am saying is that for me ´personally´ the immersive experience is heightened by using a joystick in flight sims that have a combat theme. I am not saying that the intended Mouse system is any less immersive for those who wish to use mouse control, and I´m sure that there are many optiions for control that we no nothing about when it comes to its use. It will probably be very complex, but at the moment all I have to go on are magazine articles and rumour from here. Until I try it first hand, I am going to remain skeptical. Besides, when it does come to ship movement control, if left entirely to the NN (which I believe is intended) no matter the user overlay onto that system, the ´code´ is going to be identical in every machine running Freelancer. Ok? Andy

The code that runs the NN may be the same, but I agree with Tachyon that we may be underestimating the NN, and no two people will use the same combinations and timing of moves. Add to this the fact that different NN´s will be available, as well as a different ship configuration for everyone. Since only a select few (who aren´t talking) have played the game it comes down to being skeptical about the NN, or being hopeful about it. I´m trying to be hopeful, but we´ll have to wait and see. You are all right ! We just have to be very patient and again, what does it matter wether it has joystick support or not ? I´m looking forward to see what the NN has to offer and DA told us that you can always turn of the &quot; automatic pilot &quot; and &quot; steer &quot; for yourself <img src=smilies/icon_smile_big.gif width=15 height=15 border=0 align=middle> BTW, I recently installed Windows XP on my computer and since then my joystick doesn´t work anymore <img src=smilies/icon_smile_angry.gif width=15 height=15 border=0 align=middle> It´s because I have a Logitech Wingman Warrior, which has no support for Windows XP <img src=smilies/icon_smile_angry.gif width=15 height=15 border=0 align=middle> <img src=smilies/icon_smile_angry.gif width=15 height=15 border=0 align=middle> Ok, maybe that´s not entirely right, because I can still steer, but the rudder and throttle don´t work anymore <img src=smilies/icon_smile_angry.gif width=15 height=15 border=0 align=middle> and I´m not about to buy another joystick ! Oh well, maybe I´ll just swop to Win. ME again when FL is released and when it <b>has </b>joystick support <img src=smilies/icon_smile_tongue.gif width=15 height=15 border=0 align=middle> <img src=smilies/icon_smile_wink.gif width=15 height=15 border=0 align=middle> &quot; What we do in life echoes in eternity &quot; Edited by - Eraser on 06-09-2002 09:00:29
