NEW info regarding the Elite and E2 servers

  • Well some people are psychotic enough to do that. Too bad about the server, was starting to enjoy it, considering it´s the only one I played on since the others I used to use, either have disapeared (!C4´s) or just always seem to be down when I get on. Hope things get fixed once the patch comes out and the monitoring tools are ready.

  • Gutted... Just managed to get FL working again too after i screwed up the babylon-5 mod uninstall... I was wondering why the server wasn´t showing up, so now i guess i know... Can´t you prosecute people for this kind of thing? (obviously you need to find them first...)

Them -"This is Kusari police, scanning your cargo for contraband" Me - "Sure" Them - "Now thats what i`m talking about" Me - "H-fuel is contraband?"

  • Damn those Lane Hackers! They´ll get theirs..to Mactan Base! Oh wait, Elite is down, damn! I was thinking about what I was going to do with my smuggler/pirate all day and now I come home to this. Well I hope he gets his..I´ll see him in hell (From heaven) I pray for a speedy and well thought out and equiped patch to arive. Until then I will try and find a server that can somehow fill the void in the multiplayer experience that will result from this, This and Neverwinter Nights not working, it is a sad day for Zertz´s computing fun.. • That´s really too bad. I was doing well on E2 and almost explored all the accessable systems. Oh well. That´s what beating the first player game is! I think the storyline was just a really big tutorial.

  • Did anybody consider the exploit process might have taken place on the OS level, I know the host computer was running Windows 2003 based server, perhaps the person is aware of Exploits in that?

  • Your probably very close to the truth, to be honest running the server on this OS is asking for trouble. faq

  • Finally i wait 10 years to play a decent Space sim after Elite and what better server to go with than the original name, the sad geek who done this should have his manly parts put back on him.

  • If anyone has any hard evidence that there are security vulnerabilities, or possible ways to hack into a Windows 2003 server, please do speak up. If you want to have a cheat free, solid Elite server, now is your chance to help. Responses always welcome at akataka@flserver.com. Edited by - akataka on 23-04-2003 06:07:20

  • It´s been a week now... I´m sad.

  • Don´t be sad As soon as I get my hands on the patch (ahem), the server will be back up. Oh, and as a side note, Elite is getting new hardware, and will be slowly upgraded over the next month, and should keep everyone happy. • Ok, this is gonna sound stupid to an extent, but.... A Microsoft Server product, and you´re asking about exploit/crash/hack holes? For one, the people who know them aren´t sharing. For two, look at a recent opinion comic: It shows a prison with many large holes in the walls, multiple prisoners scampering through them. Title? "If Microsoft designed our prisons". ´Nuff said. I´d like to help, but I can´t : )

  • Hellif, thank you for your opinion. I don´t want to turn this thread into a discussion comparing operating systems, but wanted to clarify my thoughts. The purpose of my post was to find out why specifically there were people thinking that using Windows 2003 as a server was a bad idea. Not to say that Microsoft hasn´t had its fair share of security issues with some of their products, in fact all major operating systems (Microsoft or not) have. I´d just rather keep the generic negative comments to a minimum, as they, in my opinion, don´t really help us here. Bottom line, this product runs on Windows, and of the options available, I feel confident that the version I am using is secure. Once again, though, if someone can prove me wrong, I´m all ears (on-line or off). Now that is over (hopefully we can leave it there), I do have some good news: Elite will be back on-line starting tonight! We have made some configuration changes, and want to test them out over the weekend. If all goes well, it should stay on-line for good. All previous accounts should be there, but if you feel a character is missing, potentially due to some of the issues we encountered earlier, please send me a mail, and I´ll look into it.
