mission 8

 • The links here and here were the same ones that I had visited, well except the IGN one since I don´t have an account with them. Here is my problem with mission 8. Let me be honest and say I use Gameshark´s unlimited afterburner on dreamcast to beat the game. I have Coyote now which was previously unavailable to me. Kraznove just warped out of no where but send me some useless fighters that detract me away from Reliant. I quickly scan for Reliant upon hearing some messages from her to head toward her. Then the mayhem starts and the torpedoes just come really fast and destroy Reliant. I have gone as far as taking hits at my six o´clock from the coalition fighters so that I can have Reliant in my view to intercept the incoming torps. I have used a couple of Havoc´s that worked sometimes but I only have two of them. I read in the walkthroughs that there are supposed to be twelve torps that I have to destroy. That seems too many unless I use guns. Coyote has blind fire and helps me target better but its range is too short to be any useful. Bandits´ two second locking time helps to destroy some but the torps fly at you too fast. My question is basically this. How do I beat Mission 8? How should I position myself with respect to Reliant. Should Reliant be partially visible? Should I have a birdeye view looking down both at the torps and the reliant or should I be underneath her and fact the torps? Should I intercept the torps from the back or from the front? I have been in the back and when I try to shoot down the torps, I also inadvertently hit reliant. That means I have to face the torps but these critters come at you really fast. Which weapon should I use for each successive torps? Is there a chance that if I shoot down Kraznov the torps won´t come out as many? Is Kraznov sending the torps or some other smaller coalition aircraft is the culprit? If you have beat this mission please respond. Over and out.

 • Use Predator. It´s slightly faster and has blind fire. Yes, you´re supposed to shoot them with guns. It´s not that hard! Mission starts-afterburn towards Krasnaya-destroy shield generator, ignore fighters-after shield gen, destroy as many turrets on Krasnaya as possible-when torp bombers start to appear, fly towards the Reliant, hover up there and continually press T to cycle through all torps within 100k - use afterburner like there´s no tomorrow! Shoot torps down with guns. Forget missiles, your current missiles take too long to lock anyway. Believe me, mission 8 is the one of the EASIEST torp hunts in the game.

 • I guess I can destroy the shield generator quite quickly with jackhammer and some turrets with other missiles. These torp bombers you are talking about,, that´s a separate rather chucky ship isn´t it? If I shoot them down before they lauch the torps my odds would be better right? When you said hover up there that means I should have a birdeye view? The thing is I use dreamcast and it´s quite cumbersome to go through the scanning. I need to press multiple buttons in very awkward way losing control in some other area to be able to scan those torps. What should be the distance when I begin firing at the torps? The standard 30 to 35k? How far from the Reliant should I be hovering over? Thanks Commodore.

 • By "Hovering", I meant just fly around The Reliant until there is a torp to hunt. Yes, try to destroy the FIRST torpedo bomber you can find, but only the first one, before it launches its full payload. The rest will have launched anyway by the time you can get in range, so they´re more of a distraction than a real target. When should you start shooting? As soon as the torp is within 100k range! The blind fire kicks alive at about 90k, and afterburn towards it, keep both guns blazing! If you use Predator or Coyote, the generators can sustain a prolonged firing runs. Don´t stop until it is destroyed. If it´s not destroyed yet by your face-to-face encounter, match speed with the torp and turn around and keep blasting. If there are no more torps to be found, go back to the Reliant asap, and wait for the next wave. Try to pick the closest torp first. Good luck!

 • and, after you´ve dealt with the torps, DO NOT DESTROY KRASNAYA´S ENGINES! Otherwise, another Kamov will decloak and blast Reliant. there will be nothing you can do about it.

 • Uh, true and false... Destroying the engine does not trigger that Kamov-decloak scene. That scene is triggered if you take too slow in killing Krasnaya´s turret (resulting in Gamma´s torps got shot down) or the Gammas are killed by enemy fighters. If you take the TIME to shoot Krasnaya´s engine, then the mission MIGHT fail for reasons above. So destroying the engine is just one of several reasons that might delay you completing a more significant objective.

 • Well I tried everything to no avail. I just don´t have good aim or speed against those torpedos. I play on dreamcast. I have the original disk but the gameshark codes are dongle dependent meaning depending on one of the several encrypted version not all cheats work. I have go infinite aft burn successfully. But my shield is on and off giving spotchy screens which is very undesirable. I am going to try Xploder Code breaker as a last resort. Unlike you guys who have completed all the levels including the 23 against the ion cannons, I just don´t have what it takes. By the way, dreamcast lets you down load the gamesaves and I was able to play little bit of level 23, once with a phoenix and the other time with a wolverine. I know I don´t deserve it but it was cool to fly those. Nevertheless, I was zapped by the ion cannon. This was cool except using the same gamesave I cannot play level 8. I go down to again five different aircrafts from 12 when I try level 8 with the same setting. I am beginning to wonder you really did the whole game without any cheats of any kind? Don´t mean to offend you but if you did, YOU ARE REALLY GOOD.

 • I had a hard time with this mission. It took many attempts, so don´t get discouraged. There is of course mroe than one way to go at this mission. The walkthrough is very helpful, but it was never intended to be cast as the only way to complete this mission (none really are). It´s more of a tried and true recommendation. I tried all combinations of ships and hardpoints. The first time I completed it I was using the Coyote with 2 gas tanks and the rest were screamer missiles. Sure they are non tracking but they do take out torps nicely if you find yourself lined up right with one. The torps are the key obviously, but if you have some screamers left over after getting the torps they work on turrets and engines too. I think the key to success is getting a jump on the first of the three Kamovs (doesn´t matter which one). If you take out either the Kamov itself or the torps it launches VERY quickly, the rest are fairly easy to handle. I´ve found that during the battle with the torps if you don´t limit yourself to only a frontal or rear assult but a combination of both you´ll do better. Careful on coming up behind them tho, they will kill you if you get too close. That´s usually when I fired off a screamer or two. Persistence is the key, you know if you´re going to be successful or fail based on how well you take out the first Kamov and it´s torps. Believe me, we´ve all been there and we all found our own little unique way of finishing this mission. You´ll find your too, just stick with it. Remember, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. If something doesn´t seem to be working, change it!

 • I think the big key with fighting torps is to make sure you load up with extra tanks of gas. I´m constantly on the afterburners when I play, so I never go on a mission with anything less than 2 extra tanks. When fighting torps I´ll load up as much as I can and just afterburn my way round. The biggest problem with torps is deciding if you´ll have time to go for the torp bomber before you go for the torps themselves. If you can manage to take out at least one torp bomber it will make life a lot easier when chasing down the other torps. But it is really a matter of being in the right place at the right time. With that said though, I don´t think I have ever completed that mission without having Maria Enrique chewing me out in the debriefing, bitching about me letting to many torps through. I wonder what the AI wingman debriefings look like.

 • isn´t miss enriques also flying a fighter in that mission ? That always has upset me most. The Key in Torp hunting missions is just not to care about the enemy fighters, even if they shoot at you. Also I played all the missions without any fuel tanks. for travelling between torps or sth the standart fuel was always enough and for long distances full power on engine works good enough. So you can have more missiles (mostly screamers) which make the fighting -sometimes- a lot easier.

 • I managed to destroy all torps without any damage to the Reliant (on easy level, though) by decreasing my speed and staying close to the mothership. If I started chasing the torps that were more distant, frequently I missed the others. Don´t forget to keep pressing T for torp targeting. However, mine was a PC version, so it can be that DC works differently (actually, I know nothing about this version of the game).

 • Well, I guess you just have to take´em outas fast as possible. Use S to select subtargets. After you destroy several of them, engines become the next subtarget. This doesn´t mean all turrets are out of the way (believing that cost me a failed mission). Just press S till you get a turret as subtarget. Hit´em till they´re finished. A good idea would be to take out some before engaging the Kamvos (i.e. ignore the fighters, afterburn to the Krasnaya, destroy the shield generator and some turrets till you get the warning about the Kamovs). After dealing with them, afterburn back to the Krasnaya and finish the job - this tactics saves time, though it also means you´ll have more fighters to protect the Gamma from. There could be other ways to do it, I guess (a good idea is reading the walkthrough and other postings)

 • Hello, I too am having a problem with mission 8. I have tried a couple different strategies, including telling all of Alpha Wing to engage a Torpedo Bomber as soon as it appears. I really sucks that I am the only one fighting torps. When Enriquez asks ´What´s going on 45th? We took another hit!´ I am asking the same question myself! Where is my support ? Klaus must know that the torpedo bombers are more important to kill than the fighters..why doesn´t he assist? Also, if the Reliant can use the flak guns from the torpedoes launched by the other capship, why can´t the very same flak guns assist me in shooting down the very same torpedoes? I don´t like to compare games, but Freespace 2 has an excellent wingman command, Protect My Target. All I would have to do is make the Reliant my target and tell Alpha Wing to protect it with their lives, engaging *anything* that is closing on the Reliant. True, ignoring the fighters would get a couple shot down, but they would be close to the Reliant so that pickup would be easy. I like this game, but it irritates me that I am the only one that is out there trying to accomplish the objectives. The same problem happens when the objective appears to shoot all the turrets. I completely ignore the fighters on my tail and work the turrets. I ask for help multiple times.. but no help ever appears. FYI if you are thinking that the ´Protect My Target´ would make Alpha Wing also engage the enemy capship, Freespace 2 also has an ´Ignore my Target´ command. I am not saying that I prefer one over the other nor am I putting down Starlancer, but a protect target command is obvious and I don´t understand why it was not included. Thanks for listening, SMATZ P.S. Sorry for long post. Edited by - smatz on 03-03-2003 13:40:41

 • Forget the AI. It sucks. The mission IS beatable, just read my and everybody else´s suggestions above.

 • i had a lot of trouble with this one too. What i found was use a coyote with one jackhammer and the rest screamers. blast the shield generator on krasnaya with the jackhammer, take out some turrets and then a couple seconds after you hear that torps were launched from the krasnaya, burn in the direction of the planet(neptune?). Anyway, the torp bombers jump in and if you got it right, one of them will be within 100k of you and you can kill it easily. After that you can go for another bomber(but it´ll usually have shot at least 1 torp before it dies) or just go torp hunting. when the reliant tells you to take out the turrets on the krasnaya, just kill them in the order that they show up in on the targeting screen. The rest of the mission is pretty easy, and after all that work, the krasnaya makes one satifying explosion

 • I found that by burning towards the rear of the reliant straight away where the krasnaya will appear you can get to the krasnaya pretty quickly. Then have some fun with the shield generator followed by turrets, engines and any pesky fighters that get annoying. Once the word hits that bombers are arriving just burn to the nearest one and dispatch it whist targeting the torpedo (or keeping an eye on) he will undoubtedly krasnayadly launch. Then torp hunt. If you are having too much trouble with the torps get a few locking missiles (I forget the name as I´m updating some stuff at the mo!!) and fire one per torp. don´t wait to see if they will hit just press T for the next torp. and work your way through. Once this is done go and have fun with the krasnaya Hope this helps Skymouse Edited by - skymouse on 03-03-2003 11:34:12 Edited by - skymouse on 03-03-2003 11:35:20

 • This culled from experience with the mission set at Medium Difficulty-- I had played up to the point that I was able to run the mission in a Mirage, sporting that big honkin´ space-gun in her nose. There are three torp boats making the attack, and they let off the fish singly. That means that at any one volley, you have three torps inbound on the Reliant. Press ´T-T-T´ to cycle through the three bombers and lock onto the first torp. Get the crosshairs in on the lead box of the torp, and set up a shot. At Medium Diff, I´m able to kill a torpedo with a single shot from the Mirage´s neutron particle cannon. Down goes one torp, target the second and shoot. Go for number three. Now, the three boats let off the second volley. Lather, rinse, repeat. Wait for the third volley, then deal with the fourth volley. Four waves of three torps each, and you´re done with the torpedo attack. That´s when it´s high time to turn the Coalition capital ship into a floating target. "Best start believing in devils, love-- because you´re dancing with one."
