  • Hey, jabez: the argument really stands that most computer art (note: not all) is soulless. It´s like playing an electric violin.

  • a little harsh, Wilde. it´s just another medium for the atrist to utilise. to blanket *most* computer art as soulless, whatever that means and you must admit that´s a rather vague statement, is akin to people who say that photography is a soulless medium. what medium is more accomodating to this *soul* of art that you speak of? i´m not having a go btw, i know what you mean but I happen not to agree. oh I can barely use a pc for *art* endeavours, I´m an oils/acrylics/gouache/charcoal/caran d´ache man myself. I´ve tried computer art, I´m rubbish at it - I´m not used to it and I find it an insensitive tool, but someone like Grom would disagree with me there.A lot of computer art is blatantly terrible, partially through lack of knowledge or experience, and partly down to simple lack of talent - which no amount of computer hardware or software will ever replace.

  • Playing an electric violin is soulless? I take it that by defintion of what you term soulless, that electric guitar is &quot;soulless&quot;. Lets lynch him - whose got the pitchfork? I have kindling!

  • I figured someone would make that argument Chips. The two are absolutely incomparable. I play violin and electric guitar, and I´ve handled electric violins. While truly there is a great difference in expression between an electric guitar and an acoustic guitar, the difference is more comparable to that between a gut-stringed violin and a metal-stringed violin. Baroque-age French music one can´t play nearly as well with a metal-stringed violin, but with gut one can´t play Wagner. Similarly, Hendrix´s music sounds absolutely amazing with an electric guitar, as does Sting´s with an acoustic. The difference all lies in style. With an electric violin one sacrifices everything for volume--volume that the violin virtuoso can produce on a wood instrument with expression as well . Point blank, an electric violin simply cannot produce the quality of sound or portray emotion or convey beauty in anything near the same manner as a wood violin. An electric guitar´s tone is fantastic and alive and brilliant....and an electric violin is just loud. Taw--soul as in Martin Buber´s &quot;spirit&quot;. I mean this in the way he speaks of art, as conveying a deep sense of beauty and truth and goodness and emotion that transcends any one individual and arrives at a kind of universal statement. Note: Truly great computer art is as valid an art form as anything else. It´s just that the medium in and of itself because it is so simple truly requires a true artist to use it. Otherwise its just kitch. Edited by - Wilde on 10/1/2005 12:13:52 PM

  • i´d strongly disagree that that is the purpose of art. it would be nice if it was, but it isn´t. and aren´t such grandiose thoughts rather dangerous? I think Wagner would be applauding you loudly for such romantic notions, and just look at him!

"for once, i`ll actually tell you what i was thinking; but maybe i won`t have anything to say.."

  • I´m sure Plotinus would applaud me too <img src=smilies/icon_smile.gif width=15 height=15 border=0 align=middle>

  • We seem to have gotten off subject here a tad.., Orillion, I´m interested in your site.. I have never moved to deviant art or any of those.. dunno why.. guess I´m still learning.. but a place to put models might be nice.. Good idea.. I´d be interested in joining.. Harrier
