ELITE - A closed server?

 • I think that´s reasonable. A lot of clan servers password their servers when a game is just coming out. It wouldn´t have to be exclusive, just put the password in a thread on the forum for anybody to find it, but to keep casual people from hogging it, just for a while?

 • thats not a bad idea i think we should have a thread in this forum for that kind of thing when i get my server up it will be password protected but i have every intetion of posting it here (broadband players only however and european if possible) later..

 • About passwording ELITE and putting it on a thread. I think that s a great idea. I think we should make this server like a whisper in the wind. It should be like a something strive for. Go innto a comon room and i want to hear people talking about the amazing server which allows 60 players. It should be great. Anyone with enough wit and commitment to walk onto this sight and see the password is definelty worthy of playing on the server.

 • for the record, I´m against password protecting the Elite server. We want people to push the envelope!! If it gets full, a simple reboot of the server and suddenly, all the spots are open again. It takes less than 20 seconds to reboot a server.

 • Um, kicking all the people is not the solution

 • Just imagine all that hard work people would lose if you rebooted the server...lost upgrades, cash etc...btw what happens if you got disco´d mid battle while you were damaged...does that count as a death like in JumpGate?

 • Password protecting is not the way to promote FL, in fact it does just the opposite IMHO. If the Elite server get´s pegged to the limit all the time, how is that a bad thing? What good comes from utlizing a password, so only people that know where to go to get it can play? I really do not believe the owner wants to manually limit the use of Elite in any way shape or form. The numbers of players (pegging the pipeline) or the hardware/software running behind the scenes is probably going to be limiting enough as it is. No need to add insult to injury.

 • Now dont take this the wrong way Stinger but...would you feel the same way if after say 4 or 5 days you were still unable to connect to Elite because its maxed out all the time? And what about the people who, when they have had enough of playing and are going out or to bed, park at a planet/station and stay connected to g´tee they can continue the next day - thus preventing more people from logging in and enjoying this wonderful game with there friends? Worth thinking about. *My God this thread is getting BIG - what have I done ! * Edited by - TheGauntlet on 13-02-2003 01:41:14

 • We have considered that and are working on that issue (among others) right now. It´s fairly easy to figure out if someone is "camping" out from the server console. Our goal is to automate it if we can. Not to worry, there are some very good, common sense people brainstorming all the possiblities. That why we want to keep it as open to everyone as we can, so contigency plans can be implemented if need be.

 • BTW, rebooting the server doesn´t reset everything. The data is still on the HDD, and when it boots up it will continue just as it was.

 • i´m thinking though, for the most part the sever will be made up of 60% of TLR regulars and say 30% TLR lurkers and 10% random (just a guess ) we may have the odd case of bad apple spoiling the bunch, but my guess is that if bargib says that newyork is a PK free zone. everyone loyal to TLR will follow. so say someone is camping out in newyork and a complaint is logged. the admin will kick him in the genitals, and he will probably be flooded with messages from most other players saying "New York is a PK free zone" given the prospect of having the entire server unfreindly to you.. i think most would stick to the rules. and for those who don´t... a swift boot in the @$$ ...Just a random thought from a random mind

 • Ouch, remind me not to accidently fire off a Sunslayer torpedo at anyone. I´ve been known to hit the wrong mouse button in the heat of battle. Edited by - Stinger on 13-02-2003 18:31:25

 • hahhaha. Poor Tach. Passwording is a bad idea. Especially since it´s not really TLR server. ---------------------------------------- I think Im dumb, maybe just happy - Kurt cobain

 • What is the facination with PKing? If you kill off those who are explores/minors/and trade, how are you going to upgrade your ships much from a wrecked ship worth only 1000 or so credits?
