Microsoft Game Voice is Awesome!

  • Uh... ...I see only one potential problem with this gadget. Can you move that mickey-mouse headphone (singular?) out of the way in order to hear your real speakers? What if you use $$$ headphones (plural!) when playing your games? Is it possible to replace the supplied headset with a clip-on microphone? How do you employ it, exactly? Details! We want more details!!! :p Thx 4 the info P.S. - How come this feature of Freelancer was not publicized in the handbook / Box cover / website? Or am I blind, as well as death & dumb... Traveller - Geneve * Melbourne * Miami * Wien NGC: P4 24b@2.88/ P4PE/ 512MB Samsung DDR426/ MSI G4Ti4200@305 64M@615/ SBLive[!/ WD WDC800JB/ Pioneer DVD-A05S/ Intellimouse Ex. 3.0/ W98SE/ DX9/ nVidia 41.09 GBA: P3 866@1040/ GW FOP-32I/ CUSL-2C/ 512MB Kingmax PC150/ Elsa 721(G3Ti200@220 64M@496)/ Fortissimo YMF744B/ Quantum 313600/ ASUS CDS-500/ iFeel std/ WinXP/ DX9/ nVidia 41.09 Edited by - Travelller on 19-03-2003 18:15:18

  • sure you can use a clip on mic, the mic/headset is basic. plug in what ever mic you want to the "command" module, and and speakers. just have to make sure your mic is muted in the sound controls... if it isn´t, you´re gonna get some nasty loopback.

  • I have Microsoft GameVoice aswell, when you buy it you will have to make a new profile for freelancer because it comes with very old game profiles (think Age Of Empires) but that microphone can be moved and eve lenghthened theres also a small Circle shaped box which allows you to press a button when you want to talk, or have it on all the time (kind of like the Mouse Flight toggle in the game) the earphones are moveable, and very comfortable (not to mention very loud....if you want them to be) and the microphone works very well. Its definitly a must buy for "Armchair Space Pilots" it takes some installation, but is very well done nonetheless, works good with Roger Wilco aswell. And i think you can get it even cheaper now, i saw it at Electronics Boutique for about 10-15 bucks. I bought mine way back, a few years ago, when it was still 50 $ "I Would Rather Die Standing Than Live On My Knees"

Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach that person to use the Internet and they won`t bother you for weeks.

  • I have a similar product called "GameCommander." It received much better reviews than GameVoice, and it works great.. Although I never use it.. I feel stupid enough talking to real people during Freelancer with Roger Wilco, let alone speaking directly to my PC

  • You people made me buy Gamevoice yesterday ( i´ll receive it in 48 hours)... I can´t wait to speak commands like "Cruise Speed!!!", "Fire torpedos!!!" or "Dock". It will be fun!!!!! Thanks for the tip!

  • The GV is a pretty solid product. I wish more companies would see that good quality voice chat programs like GV, RW and Battlecom are in pretty good demand. MS has aparently forgotten about it, I havnt seen an update for it in a long time, maybe cause 1.5 is solid enough :p I wonder if they´ll ever make a GV 2.0

  • After reading what you guys have mentioned here, I´m thinking of getting one of these. What kind of delay is there between the time you speak the command and it being triggered? regards

  • I´ve got one as well, though I originally bought it for Tribes. I´m not currently using the command part of it though I can see the benefits of it. Imagine stating "flare" for your countermeasures or "torp" to fire a torpedo!! Good stuff. In Tribes I used it to switch weapons occasionally stating things like "snipe" for the rifle, etc. As for delay, when speaking to someone you´ll find that there´s about a 1/2 - 3/4 of a second of delay. (I used a phone and the GameVoice to test this out though of course you wouldn´t notice it in game.) I don´t remember how much delay there is when using the command part though I´d expect about the same. It probably depends greatly on how fast your computer is since it´s trying to recognize your voice and what you´re saying. I really enjoy using this to talk through the game. With me and a buddy talking on a private channel we can call up support if we need it. If he´s driving a freighter and I´ve got a fighter then I´ll jump through the gates first and let him know if it´s all clear or not. Also, if we´re in a big fight, I can tell him to get out of the middle of it and that way he protects the load and I occupy the fighters. Microsoft has a free version of this product too called GameVoice Share and it appears to be very similar to Roger Wilco.

  • Why the hell do think Microsoft had the programmers make joystick an non-option. The could not the damned thing any other way. YES I do own a game voice but I still prefer the quicker option of buttons on my joystick for some actions. If you have read the lead programmers reasons for mouse/keyboard only you will find they hold about as much water as a sieve. After all why would you piss-off a whole section of the TRUE gamer market this way.

  • wow you guys got me wanting it i would love to voice my commands. i right now got a logtech 4 button mouse i use the thumb for AB but to voice it that would be even does freelancer KB setup reciknize the GC make voice all secondary options?

  • Viper, your post has nothing to with the Game Voice. You aren´t supposed to start up crap about the joystick here either. Hotkeys are hotkeys, and voice commands for them are simply what they are also. That´s that. Voice commands are all about immersion and the fluidity of control just by SAYING stuff... Btw, nothing´s stopping you from using keys/buttons IN CONJUNCTION with the Game Voice. Map voice commands to all the stuff you can´t reach with your left hand while using the thruster, for instance. • I do have one too. There was just a special offer when I bought it. 2 for the price of 1. Well, what the hell should I do with 2 of it? Luckily, my friend´s brother destroyed the one of my friend. So, I sold him the second for half the price... But I don´t use it for voice commands. I use, or better, will use it to communicate and coordinate action while playing online. But I´m still waiting for my damned cable-modem. Arrrghh... hopefully, I´ll receive it before the weekend. Hail thee, my metal-brethren[!

  • Drop the joystick and step away from the forum. We have you surounded. Anyway, I don´t think I could handle the thought of constantly yelling at my computer without it even doing anything wrong. I would be interested in voice chat, unfortunately none of my friends have head-set-mics. Why didn´t I register the day after?

  • I´m already using my GameVoice with voice commands... IT´S INCREDIBLE!!!! Of course there is a small delay (maybe half a second), but for comands like GoTo, Map, Dock, Cruise, Free Flight, Closest Enemy, GameVoice is great because I can focus on the fight... You know: fly and fight with the mouse, control speed, manouvers and heavy weapons with the keyboard, and do the rest with the Voice!!! It´s a great adition, thank´s again for the tip.

  • Thanks for the feedback. Seeing I already have a headset with a mike, I presume I can use this with the Game Voice share software. Is there any other software that will do the same thing that it may be worth testing out?

  • That does sound pretty neat, although I have to admit I would probably be severely derided by friends/family/whoever happened to be around if I were heard using it
