trouble with computer (what else?)

 • Windows 98 your going to have to get someone with a much better memory then me to answer this question... I have trouble remembering what happened an hour ago let alone 7 years... "When I was younger I could remember anything, whether it happened or not." Mark Twain (1835-1910); US writer and journalist.

 • format your computer. reinstall 98 or get xp. try windows update/spyware/adaware/online virus checkers(up to date). then do a scandisk and defrag. basicly give your pc the once a year good inside clean. if you dont feel like formatting. it might fix it.

 • One up on Speed, get win 2000 Me isn´t worth the time. First, after reformating, you need all drivers current. A good reason to always to download them, to a disk, then have for later. Drivers are the first I would check. Edited by - Finalday on 3/18/2005 3:43:05 AM

 • When all else fails - reformat, reinstall, reap the rewards of a lousy backup schedule, repent. Let´s get those missiles ready to destroy the universe!! Edited by - Ugnaught on 3/18/2005 2:41:50 PM

 • Wolfy, how many times is this now? rather than just limping along why dont you just back up your stuff and reformat with new o/s? and abandon that 98 junk, sheesh boy bite the dam bullet. you wont regret it.

 • *sigh* nobody seems to listen that i can´t just go out and buy XP or anything else. i don´t have a job, i´m underaged, hell, i don´t even have my driver´s liscence yet.

 • Does your Dad have win XP or 2000? If he does, use it for the time being on your computer.

 • You could try putting a magnet near the comp and leaving it for a few hours. Wipes everything clean

 • would never happen on a unix... ay the holes and flaws of microshaft.

 • Wolfy, your computer is so knackered now it´s virtually beyond salvation unless you start again from scratch. if you don´t want to do that, and you won´t back up and reinstall after a reformat, then this is q seriously what i suggest you do. first, run Norton Windoctor and Disk Doctor and let them fix all the missing shortcuts and registry errors and truncatedfiles, and any disk problems there may be (and herien may lie a source of your troubles - your disks might well be knackered) gon into the startup list and take out all media players, calender programs, fast startup programs, in fact everything but the critical windows stuff like rundll32 and systray and all the AV and Firewall stuff. re-install W98 over the top, from boot. dont repartition or reformat, just install into the existing Windows directory. once complete run Windows Update and update *everything* esp IE and DirectX and the security updates. install a third party defrag utilty like Diskeeper and do a full defrag. update your AV and run a full files and programs scan. use Adaware and scan for spyware and remove the lot. run Norton Windoctor and Disk Doctor and let them fix all the missing shortcuts and registry errors and truncatedfiles, and any disk problems there may be (and again i stress that herien may lie a source of your troubles - your disks might well be knackered) gon into the startup list and take out all media players, calender programs, fast startup programs, in fact everything but the critical windows stuff like rundll32 and systray and all the AV and Firewall stuff. tweak the system for optimal performance, theres plenty of tips around on how to do that, I´ve posted some and so have others, and you know where we are if you need some help. now if that lot doesnt sort it then you are truly stuffed, young feller. very likely your disks are now so trashed that theyre on the point of physical failure, I´m sorry to say, then you probably will lose everything anyway. so backup now. • "Does your Dad have win XP or 2000? If he does, use it for the time being on your computer. " Thas illegal and if you say a guy cant DL a GAME he bought himself because it would require a No Cd patch then I think prioritys need changed.

 • If you own a legal copy of 2000, you can put it on more than one computer to work on it. Our compnay own 3 on our property and one copy of 2000 for all. The theh who set it up, left us the disk, if it ever needs to be repaired. XP, is a one on one basis only. I would say wolfy could use 2000 yo "resuce" his computer then save up and buy XP for it. Sub note, I own 98, 98se, ME, 2000 and 5 legit copies of XP. The first was the night it came out. The others, with new computers, and one with a laptop that was stolen, but I still have the disks. Edited by - Finalday on 3/23/2005 5:12:48 PM

 • i think you´ll find thats 2000 Server with a multiple client licence. W2K itself is *supposed* to be installed on an individual machine only. there´ll be client access licencing going on there FD.

 • Since you did not indicate you have Win 98 Second Edition, might I offer up a program that must be the first file you installed when (or if) you decide to reinstall that operating system from scratch. Windows Installer For some reason this file is not on the regular Win 98 CD and it acts like a traffic cop of sorts for all software you install. It is a life saver and a cure for computer headaches. I swear by it. • goodness gracious Rob I actually agree with you. sadly our mutual acquaintance (Wolfy) will prob complain that he doesnt understand or have or can get that and in 3 months time will still be moaning about his dying computer.
