Prefer cockpit view or third person?

  • I absolutely do prefer the cockpit view. There is nothing more intense than sitting in the ship yourself. I simply wouldn´t have bought the game if it hadn´t a cockpit view. Yes, it´s that important for me. <img src=smilies/icon_smile.gif width=15 height=15 border=0 align=middle> ------------- <img src=´http://home.t-online.de/home/a…s/lancersreactorsmall.jpg ´> &quot;In all likelihood you´re going to die out there. • It depends on the situation and the ship. If im exploring, ill do third person. If im in combat and the ship im using is HUGE, ill do first person, but if the ship is small, ill do third. Over all im a third person sorta guy. <img src=smilies/icon_smile_tongue.gif width=15 height=15 border=0 align=middle> I like to hear the engine and weapons sounds. <b>- </b>-<b>- </b>-<b>- </b>-<b>- </b>-<b>- </b>-<b>- </b>-<b>- </b>-<b>- </b>-<b>- </b>-<b>- </b> <img src=´http://members.shaw.ca/electricbrain2/sig.jpg ´>

  • I like lookinga round with turret view, and you can hit targets you normally can´t when you´re in 3rd... but that stupid engine flare gets mighty annoying to look at... especially on long cruise runs.

  • Haven´t tried it yet, but can´t you click &quot;cockpits&quot; off in one of the options menus and then go to an &quot;unobscured&quot; 1st person view? I think that´s the case yet I haven´t tried. I´m going to bed now, so hopefully someone knows the answer since i won´t check until tomorrow. <img src=´http://portfolio.iu.edu/dwanasel/sarpsig.jpg ´>

  • Yeah, you can see and fight a lot better in third in my opinion because of the way the controls and turrets/guns work in this game, and I think flying through debris fields and maneuvering is just a bit better since you can see more around you. Though I can´t say the flare effects have bothered me - I kinda like seeing my ship, flares included. Just as a side-note, in thinking of games that this reminds me of, believe it or not one of the most similar games now that I think about it (which I also loved) was a game called Interstate 76. Perhaps some of you played it. Yeah, it was a car game, but very similar in that you could have a limited first person or 3rd person view, third was preferred, and it was also similar in the way you configured your car, fought, and got weapons from other destroyed cars, etc. It wasn´t really open-ended like FreeLancer, but besides that fact, the gameplay was pretty darn similar in my mind.

  • Unfortunately you can´t play as well in first person view. 1.The gunflashes are blocking the entire view 2.You don´t get a feeling for your ship if you want to do a dog fight in the debris field or so, so you collide all the time, which you don´t in 3rd person view 3.You seem to hit better with 3rd person view You met me at a very strange time in my life.

  • The only problem with 3rd person is when the enemy´s right where your ship is on the screen. Then you have to really search for that floating red leader to keep fighting. But that only happens for about 2 seconds max, then the guy you´re shooting at veers off and you follow. Heavy fighters and freighters practically demand 3rd person for the turret view. It´s ok, though, since I like it =) Edited by - Aerundel on 09-03-2003 10:34:53

  • I have found NO use for third person view. I play in cockpit mode only. Anything else would be blasphemy. I think this is supposed to be a space sim like Privateer 1. I should probably try out 3rd person view for fighting, but I don´t think it will work as well as 1st person/cockpit. SumerNivek Killer of Khaja the Fang Privateer Extrodanaire

  • 1st person is the only way to go. I´ll leave 3rd person to the console players. <img src=smilies/icon_smile_wink.gif width=15 height=15 border=0 align=middle> I came. I saw. I conquered. And sometimes get conquered. &quot;I´m Natrunner, I don´t run TLR but we have an understanding.&quot;

  • I prefer cockpit view... I played with nothing but 3rd person view at first for a while, because I liked the wider view in battle. But now I like the cockpit view most... Don´t know why, I guess it´s more realistic.<img src=smilies/icon_smile.gif width=15 height=15 border=0 align=middle>

I use both views and find them both to be fun. I like the variety. I think it is absurd to flame someone for which view they prefer, or to argue that using one view or another makes someone a &quot;twink.&quot;

  • I´m not a console gamer (though I have no problem with anyone who is - from what I´ve seen consoles have great games too, though I personally have chosen the PC route for myself). If you prefer the cockpit view, that´s fine and I respect it - just some of us feel you get a better view for maneuvering from 3rd person. And as far as this being a simulator, that is debateable, but I´d say it really isn´t. Actually, it´s somewhere in between simulator and arcade shooter, but if I had to pick, my opinion is it´s more arcade (whereas Starlancer, for example, is more of a sim).

  • For straight up sims (Freespace,X-wing series, ect) I´ll use cockpit view. But I just feel more comfortable with the 3rd person view in games like Freelancer and Crimson Skies.

  • Cockpit view 90% of the time. I only switch to 3rd person when I absolutely have to, like in the last couple of fights in the SP campaign. I somethimes use the &quot;Roving&quot; view to see what´s off the the sides of my ship (since I don´t have Radar to show me whats there). I must admit, I miss having a Radar display. Particularly when someone decides to glue themselves to by backside and continuously pepper me! If I knew they were lining up behind me, I could circle around and nail them! Instead, I don´t know about it until I start getting hit. Oh well.

  • ThresholdRPG - &quot;I think it is absurd to flame someone for which view they prefer&quot; He wasnt flaming you, he was joking, you left out the wink knowingly I imagine to get your point across.. I dont like 3rd person myself, my ship tends to block my sight from the enemy but the sounds are way cooler... <img src=´http://www.msnusers.com/mypicture?user=4263~4AAtAAAAACoFUE5bS5fEmYMRPh0SIF!Viq9hFr2W4ROM3bDsuD6U0BMg$$~4AAuAAAAAEfDixx545EW7QgwAqaRx6Lsp41kyPFvzaxf4$ ´>

  • Calm down and don´t take it personal. It was just a friendly jab at console players. There has been and always will be a friendly competition between console players and pure PC gamers. <img src=smilies/icon_smile_tongue.gif width=15 height=15 border=0 align=middle> I came. I saw.
