Rome: Total War

 • I guarantee you will like it. it isn´t just tactics, even though the tactical element is wonderfully done in all the Total War series. there´s an excellent strategey side in which you build up your forces and infrastructure, leaving the actual combat to the tactical interface. training, experience, morale, status, stamina, as well as armour and weaponry are all taken into account on the battlefield. I´m amazed you haven´t played it before. put it like this, when i played Shogun:TW for the forst time, it was a s close as I´m ever going to get to Sengoku Japan without a time machine or re-editing an Akira Kurosawa film. the game suspends disbelief and is incredibly vivid. so buy with confidence. Radio Free Tawakalnistan <img src=´http://homepage.ntlworld.com/tawakalna/pics/atom.gif ´>

 • If you haven´t read this review already, you might find it helpful. Let me put it this way though Esquilax, it´s being hailed as the best strategy game of all time. Can´t wait to play as the Seleucids, don´t know why but they appeal to me. Then I´ll try Romans and finally Germans. ------------------------------- The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. • Hmm, if I get it I´mma make the parthion shot my signature move, the only thing I´d have to watch out for is a testudos, oh and cavalry. As for reviewing a Total War game I´ve only played Shogun(an dunfortanetly I´ve lost the cd Key for it ). Conquering the land will take time, especially if you choose to control the battles every single time. You see when you mov einto an enemy province(or whatever) and the enemy has an army situated there a screen pops up asking you fi you want to control your army in the battle or if you want the computer to calculate who wins. If you win the battle the province is taken over(also watch out for rebelious people, they aren´t a real faction, but they can pop up anywhere and can bea nuisance). Emissary´s can be sent to the enemy to negotiate a treaty or if the guy is really mad at you, he has the option of sending aspy after the emissary and killing him(as I so sweetly remember the ninja cutscenes from Shogun). Now to talk about spies, basically you can send them to attack an enemy army in the province your targeting, they will attempt to assasinate the officer/commander and decrease enemy morale before battle making a win essentially easier(or you can go after the enemy genral if he´s there and get a clean sweep victory, although the chanc eof you killing the enmy genral like that is very very slim, actually it gives you a percentage of the chance of succes for the assasination). That´s all the info I have if it helps any, the only other helpful thing I can offer is the weakness triangle, calvary beats arrows, arrows beat infantry, infantry beats cavarly, it´s explaine din the tutorial, well gtg bye. P.S. I need a link to Finalday´s Tlr the dark wars story thing(the one wher he put usin Star Wars) I really need to post the new and improved Star Wars Gansta Rap there! Thank you Edited by - Jagged on 9/24/2004 4:51:52 PM

 • I can´t wait to watch Taw fiddle while rome burns....wheres your history Taw, didn´t you know that the visigoths sacked rome? They didn´t burn it down though...and later on most of the roman army was made up of "barbarians" too.. Fear the horde...I´ll trample you underfoot and keep your skull as a trophy

 • don´t think I haven´t learnt the lessons of history. my foot *will* be superior in formation and tactical deployment, and I´ll be well prepared to check cavalry. as "barbarians" have no long-range weaponry, I fail to see how co-ordinated disciplined heavy foot supported by short and medium range missile weaponry can´t prove consistently superior on an ancient battlefield, providing they can choose their ground or can to some extent alter local conditions. the advantage that barbarian armies had in ancient times over the Romans was cavalry, an arm which the Romans had traditionally eschewed. this led to major barbarian incursions, rapid and vicious in natuyre, in the 3rd C AD which were exacerbated severely by internal dissensions in the Empire and rival Emperors. When this trend was stopped, the Roman military came out completely changed, thx to a succession of able Emperors such as Aurelian and ultimately Diocletian (a genius)and Constantine. In this altered form, which you can see on the Arch of Constantine in Rome (when it´s not being "restored,&quot it was able to fulfill it´s duties in the West until the final division of the Empire, and in the East, well it survived for another thousand years. so you see, both the Romans and by extension me, have learnt the lessons well

 • Sounds like a great game! Did anyone see that series on the History Channel called Decisive Battles or something that used this game´s engine to recreate the battles? Ever since I saw that, I knew I would have to buy this game! ____________________________________ Some questions I have... • I didn´t see it, but I read about the show in PCG. I really want this game but I kinda need to concentrate on more important things right now so I am resisting the urge to buy the game. I read two good reviews on it one in PC Gamer and the Game Spy review (which I thought was pretty detailed). Both thought the game was excellent. It just seems like everything I have ever wanted out of a strategy game done well.

 • Medievel is incrediable. You can charge thousands of men into a massive battle. It looks great, I can´t wait to get Rome

 • I just played the RTW demo. I have never played any of the other Total War games, but I was totally blown away. There are literally thousands of men on the screen and everyone is charging and cutting people down (lol bad description but I´m really excited). I was actually laughing when my cavalry charged (akin to the many cavalry charges in the Return of the King movie) and took out a group of enemy infantry. I would say that if your computer can run it and you have any interest in strategy gaming you should get this game. For people that are worried about the interface I found it extremely intuative, of course I only played the RTS part of the game not the turn based part so I don´t know how that is (from what I have heard it is on par with Civilization tho). Anyway the point is get this game!

 • Ecce Tawakalna nunc triumphat qui subegit Esquilax.. choose your ground and use the terrain to your advantage don´t dissipate your forces make the enemy come to you maintain your tactical advantage(s) hold your line´s cohesion even if withdrawing outflank the enemy when his main force is engaged don´t be scared of elephants! follow these rules on the RTW battlefield and you will overcome. the battle should be won before it´s even fought IF you plan ahead carefully enough. check out the campaigns of Pompey, Caesar, Agrippa, Agricola, Julian, and Belisarius, they´ll show you what you need to know. Especially Belisarius.

 • My smaller Carthaginian force made a mockery of that alleged Roman discipline. Of course, this only is the demo and I wasn´t allowed to choose the Julian faction´s force which outnumbered mine by about 450 men. Those poeni and the sacred band heavy cavalry are wonderful units. And those armored elephants made up for being outnumbered. Edited by - Indy11 on 9/25/2004 7:34:35 PM

 • If you want to play as the Romans there´s a little hack avaliable. Go here. Don´t apply it more than once or it´ll screw up the demo, and once you put the hack on you can´t play as the Carthiginians(spelling?) unless you reinstall the demo.
