Thoughts on aliens?

 • I beleive there are life forms other than on earth. As for humanoid/intelligent creatures, I don´t know, but I guess that if there was life forms spread throughout the universe there would be many different stages, some more advanced, some less advanced, some barely evolved etc. However the possibilites of them reaching or contacting us (before we die out or something ) are remote. Remember, someone a billion light years away, taking a dozen steps away from the earth, the time for him is now hundreds of years into the future for us. If he takes a dozen steps towards the earth, it is hundreds of years into our past. (I shall explain if you don´t beleive me ) Thats just an example to show that there are many difficult laws of physics that need to be overcome before they reach us, not just speed of light travel. However I guess its always possible to overcome them.

 • Hmm...I dont think my view can be posted, so I´ll just say...I dont believe they exist...dont ask me to explain...my explanation will be against the forum rules The dude at the game shop is such an idiot...he told me I should try out Real Life sometime...this while he knows that I dont like fantasy

 • Got to ditto sw, though there are days i wish there were a few Vulcans around.

 • There has to be "aliens" imo...how can humans be the only species in the universe...how can only 1 planet out of the billions there must be, be populated with organisms.

 •

how can only 1 planet out of the billions there must be, be populated with organisms.

<font face=´trebuchet ms, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica´ size=2>Thats where youre wrong, those Billions of other planets are populated with other organisms, only question is, are they multi or single cellular organisms?? are they capable of independant thought?? are they capable of thought in anyway??

 • my view is this, we havent been contacted by aliens, as they feel we arent advanced enough for them to bother with us, either that, or they have been through what we have, only not fared as well, and are watching us to see what we do.

 • I´m going to have to agree with Locutus, we don´t know if they are more advanced than us or if they are less... or if they are even capable of conscious life... and if they are, what are their intentions? Good or evil? What ever the answer is... they aren’t any where near us, and we haven’t been able to find any planets that could possibility sustain life, every system we´ve found out side our own have only a few planets and they are all gas giants with a 2 day orbit 2,000,000 – 3,000,000 miles away from their star unless the aliens are lava monsters I don´t think their is advanced life out there sorry. -- Edit -- Wow... that sounds suffisticated considering it was typed by a Texan Edited by - Veral on 11/14/2004 3:22:40 PM

 • I have to agree with Locutus on this one, The question of is there life outside of earh is a almost guranteed to be a yes. The twist to that is though the chances are very very high that the "life" in question will be a single cell organism that just drifts and has no brain or signs of life that we would consider alien. We just dont have the technolegy to tell if their is life outside of earth until they contact us, all of the speculation and guesses in the world can not come up with the answer to this question. As for verals statement about the only planets beside earth and our solar system all being gas giants with very short orbits is very untrue. In the past 6 years using new technolegy that detects a "wobble" in the star caused from orbiting planets they have discovered many planets of smaller sizes and that are solid planets not the gas-giants like jupiter or saturn.

 • there simply has to be extraterrestrial life. its all down to the probability of the stuff. there´s more galaxies than there ever were people on earth (and thats alot) look at it this way. even today, there are people with the rarest of diseases. but are they alone? no. there still are a few others out there who have that same disease. technically speaking, we´re a uber-rare disease to the planets. but seeing the sheer numbers, there has to be at least a couple hundred more out there that are breeding their own definition of life. out of those couple hundred, some may be in infant stages, some in middle, some far into extremely complex development. i read an article about ´inteligent design´ which

“intelligent design,” which holds that the universe is so complex that it must have been created by an unspecified higher power.

<font face=´trebuchet ms, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica´ size=2> mods can delete this part out if they feel it teeters towards religion, but i have to say, any sort of individual ´higher power´ would never reach the capability required to create something as complicated as the universe, save for nature itself, and by chance. back to thoughts on aliens, like i said, there has to be at least a few species on a similar level of intelligence as we are. i´m actually understating, given the odds. i woudln´t be suprised if we find at least 2 intelligent species in every galaxy. the number of solar systems in our galaxy alone, though undiscovered, given the number of stars, has to be ALOT. given the chances, people, if anything were impossible, it´s for extraterrestrial life to not exist. if that were true, i´d hate to live in such a lonely place where ultimately, we´re consumed by stupidity.

 • howcome people are saying others are "wrong"? to be aliens, they dont have to be as smart as us..or capable of independant thinking. just because para thinks there are other organisms, doesnt mean they aren´t because they can´t think. he was only pointing out that there has to be some type of organism out there...

 • Look, theres already aliens on earth. it all depends on your perspective (mexicans for example) UFOs? Many people have claimed to see extraterrestrial spacecraft. This is NOT the true definition of a UFO. I could see a massive european wasp, and go "what tha *** is that?" and at that point I have seen a UFO. I cant identify it at that point, but then i realise its a massive wasp and I run like a little girlie. (I have a phobia of wasps and bees. wasps mainly) There are some people however who cannot easily identify things and jump to the conclusion that they´ve seen something not of this world when it´s just a frisbee. ET life? Definately. Intelligent ET life? Dunno. But Chaos Theory dictates that they will not be exactly the same, and probably will breathe sulfur and fart oxygen. -Love Shark

 • i have visited a nice dissertation about this topic back in university ~5 years ago. the prof made some nice and easily understandable calculations about probabilities of life (intelligent or not). he actually made 2 calculations, one pessimistic and one optimistic. the calcs relied on numbers of stars in a galaxy, - number of stars that could have planets, planets that could be inhabitable (i.e. ahtmosphere, ...) and so on. the result was... funny but interesting - the optimistic calc said that in our galaxy the probability for life is ~0.83 - including earth an mankind. but it was also clear that we aint the only ones out there. --------------------------------- Infinity TC Mod Leading Developer

 • The sheer size of the universe makes the probability of there being other life out there almost too large to ignore.....but that doesn´t necessarily mean that there IS....it just means that an intelligent person should not rule out the possibility. And that includes for religious reasons. FD and SW, if you´re interested in chatting about this via email, please get in touch (mark the subject line TLR)...I´d be very interested in knowing your views.

 • Gromit , that´s exactly my point as well. My strong point is math, and from a mathematical standpoint, the probability of there being no aliens in the universe is zip to nill. Based on Locutus´s post, I must raise another question. What defines an &

 • I find it improbable that there is no alien life out there. For anyone to think that our planet is the only one in the entire universe capable of sustaining life is purely delusional.

 • when was I mean? I was merely jesting...there wasn´t even a hint of me being sarcastic or sardonic or anything! And besides, its true! Moderation is moderation, but a bit of polite teasing is bloody human nature! EDIT* Dear me after posting this I just went and read "status of TLR II" Well I´m not complaining about moderation (yet) I have much respect for the site rules all I am saying is I have seen far more offensive stuff passed in jest between regulars like taw and esq and indy etc *walks away on tiptoes* Edited by - Griffon_26 on 11/15/2004 9:53:32 PM Edited by - Griffon_26 on 11/15/2004 10:05:58 PM

 • Scientific fact: The odds that this is no life PERIOD other then earth life in the universe is basicly impossible. now sentient life is totaly different. my dear friend said, when i asked him this, that either we would have large amounts of sentient life or almost no sentient life at all. to quote from a favorite movie of mine "Do you think theres life out there?" "If there isn´t its a big waste of space". personally (completly truthfully) due to the current revoloution in Aviation and Space flight i hope to be on/fly a space shuttle around. also in a few years the first mars teams will land (FACT) and so we will get another look at the decent theory that there was some form of life once on mars becuase 99% most likley there was water on mars. (according to a teacher of mine (Univesrty chemistry dude) the water patterns could be caused by something other then water) Bill watson in all his funny brillance said (through a ´friend´ of his ) the sure sign that there is life in the universe is that it hasnt tried to contact us. think about that ___________________ check this! http://www.freewebs.com/worldofbobcrew
