• Ok here´s one. There are two trains. One from Chicago, the other from Los Angeles. They are both traveling towards Panama City, FL. The train from Los Angeles is moving at a speed so that it will reach Panama City exactly two hours before the train leaving from Chicago. Now assuming that the train from Chicago must also make a two hour layover in Knoxville, Tenn., at what time would both trains need to leave from their respective stations and at what speed would both need to be traveling in order to meet the requirement of the LA train reaching Panama City two hours before the Chicago train. Hint: Assume the trains will be traveling in a straight line. A cookie to anyone who gets the answer. Have fun! Edited by - Sylverfysh on 4/3/2005 9:17:54 PM

 • *Steps from shadows* Very well, I have to answer the following question for one of my Master´s assignments; Can tacit knowledge be transformed into explicit knowledge? It must be answered in the following contexts; professional, socio-cultural, theoretical, individual and group contexts. It needs to be about 2,500 words and cite at least 10 references, preferably academic journal articles. Oh, and I want it on my desk at 9am tomorrow morning! Interestingly, that assignment is one of the easiest ones . *Returns to shadows still typing up assignment* Edited by - esquilax on 4/4/2005 12:13:14 AM

By definition, for speed is distance/time, you would at least need variables on how long the journey for one train takes, and the distance that is covered. Rewriting it to say "I leave my house to go to my grans, and my mate leaves his house to meet me there. I want to get there 2 hours before him, but he is going to make a stop on the way for two hours. How far do we have to go, at what time do we leave, and at what speed?" Simply put, stupid question. Give more details. Edited by - Spanner Monkey on 4/4/2005 5:10:20 AM

 • Furry muff, take it that anyone who actually wants help will thank the timewasters making pointless posts - which will mean that no-one will take the thread seriously, therefore not attempting to help them with any troubles. No wonder these threads never work/are a complete waste of time.

 • You want a real homework question? All right then, this is from my Principles of Chemistry II course. "How much energy is lost or gained when a mole of cobalt-60 undergoes beta decay: 60/27 Co -----> 0/-1 e + 60/28 Ni? The mass of the the 60/27 Co atom is 59.933819 amu, and that of a 60/28 Ni atom is 59.930788 amu. For reference the mass of an electron is 5.4858 x 10^-4 amu." There, a real honest homework question EDIT: I can´t place the elements in their correct form so whenever there is a "#/#" it´s not division, it´s simply stating that the first number is above the second. • Actually need help. I´m doing horrible in chem I know there is something about how when mass is decreased there is some sort of energy loss, but I don´t know how to set up the equation so that I can figure out how much energy is released.

 • well glad to see this threads good! But we need more topics! Language arts Reading science spanish and any other except (med school, health class, gym.) and i got some BAD news! My school is taking standerdiesd* tests AGIAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We just did math paractice and what do you now! my teacher says there is 3 mathe topics we did NOT cover! multiplying fractions by decimals USING the order of operations! ex. 236 1/4 x 300.444 divided by (678.3 x 5) + 5 = what? ihate math! that was an actual problem! and on science what is the rounded distance of the earth from the sun at winter? fall? summer? spring?... how the !@#$ can i figure that out?? and in history. what was the 20th presidants uncle? aunt? mother? we did not !@#$%^&* learn that!!!!!!!!!! and i dont want to get starded about ... (stiky plaese!) (me want sticky) Edited by - Beta-5 on 4/4/2005 7:08:49 PM

 • Homework eh? whats my opinion on the pope dying? i need to know by next tuesday. Kidding aside all this math stuff is beyond me... why cant we do history or something wholesome? Math is evil... _______________ i dont suffer fools gladly , in fact i dont suffer them at all

 • Sorry, hadn´t checked in. J Dawg is correct: A neutron is becoming a proton, electron, and an anti-neutrino. To work out the energy released during the decay, you use (as J Dawg said) E = mc^2 (I can find signs for ½ and ¼, but squared ). So how can we do this? Well, we can work out the change in mass, and c is a constant (speed of light, check your books for value, as we used 2.998x10E8 m/s), and this will give us the change in energy... 59.930788 - 59.933819 = m ergo = -0.003031g (we are talking about one mole) or = -3.03x10^-6 Kg The mass decreases - this means that energy is given out... So delta E (change in energy, or the amount given out) is the change in mass multiplied by the speed of light squared (don´t forget to convert mass into kg´s instead of g´s though - so you can have the unit of joules... (remember ^ is symbolising ´to the power´) dE = (2.998x10^8) ^2 * dM This will give you the change in energy in Joules (J) Anyone see any errors, speak up - cause its been a while *edit* - if you have to calculate per atom instead of per mole, just divide the mass by Avogadro´s constant = 6.022 x 10^23 atoms per mole Edited by - Chips on 4/5/2005 7:13:10 AM

 •

what is the rounded distance of the earth from the sun at winter? fall? summer? spring?... how the !@#$ can i figure that out??

<font face=´trebuchet ms, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica´ size=2> Well, the seasons are not caused by the distance from the earth to the sun - so the answer should be that its the same. If you need an explanation into what causes the seasons, and why the distance from Earth has nothing to do with it - then just say As for math - I am no fan either I would assume the same old method is use these days for ordering maths: BODMAS b rackets o f d ivision m ultiplication a ddition, s ubtraction. This represents the order you work through when doing these types of sums.

236 1/4 x 300.444 divided by (678.3 x 5) + 5 = what? ihate math!

<font face=´trebuchet ms, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica´ size=2> Using the above So for this, do whatever is in brackets first: (678.3 x 5) = 3391.5 Next - I am going to assume the 236 1/4 is actually 236.25 and not 236 x 1/4 236.25 x 300.444 / (3391.5) + 5 = Next, division: 300.444 / 3391.5 = 0.088 So: 236.25 x 0.088 + 5 = Multiplication: 236.25 x 0.088 = 20.79 So: 20.79 + 5 = 25.79 <--- and thats your answer IF I have got this right. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, or times have moved on Just have to split it into steps using the above BODMAS (as we called it) - which is the order the mathematical functions are carried out. • The cobalt beta decay is easy, Take the difference in mass defects. That´s your E-beta-max. If they´re being sadistic and want you to remember that beta-minus decay is not a monoenergetic phenomenon, then take about one-third E-beta-max and that´s your E-beta-peak. *pokes Wilde* A period, comma, semi-colon or something might aid in comprehending that sentence. *pokes all* I want to back-compute a matrix from chosen eigenvectors.
