Hurricane Rita..

    Houston is right on the coast itself but the worst thing that could happen would be a direct hit to Galveston, Texas. Its levees are in worst shape then what the ones in New Orleans were when it was bombarded by Katrina. The storm has turned a little to the East and Galveston will hopefully avoid the worst of it. As of yesterday evening they changed the direction of all the major highways and all lanes are now outbound so that should help the traffic greatly. The problem now is New Orleans will be getting a predicted 3-6 inches of rain, which is very close to the amount engineers have said could completly flood the city again. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but has anyone seen the story on the bus, its a shame. <A href=´http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,170212,00.html´ Target=_Blank> This </a>is a bus carrying eldery people trying to get away from the approaching hurricane, apparently a mechanical problem started setting off the passengers oxygen tanks and the bus blew up...     Houston is so flat they have 5-6 foot deep ditches near roads to catch rain run off and keep from basic flooding. I was there 4 years ago. It could flood in a heart beat.

    Texas City, Galveston Island, Galveston, Houston are now all plotted to be on the west side of Rita´s eye. That´s marginally better news albeit by no means &quot;good.&quot; <img src=´http://image.weather.com/image…ltst_6nh_enus_600x405.jpg ´> Also, Rita´s wind speed has come back down to 135mph which puts her just after the turning point from a Cat 3 to a Cat 4 storm. Be her linear travel also has come down to 10mph... the slower she goes, the more rain she´ll dump. The wind swathe diameter for hurricane force winds is about 125 miles wide or about 60+ miles on either side of the eye. Her currently projected land fall still places the above cities within the hurricane force swathe but on the weaker (western) side of it. Some of the New Orleans levees already damaged by Katrina are beginning to be overtopped by Lake Ponchartrain again as we speak. &lt;Edit&gt; Not yet updated on the graphics but Rita is now downgraded to a Cat 3. Still, killer winds but less devastating. The cooler band of Gulf surface water finally is having an effect and dampening the furnace that was driving Rita´s winds. Lets hope this continues. But her slow place is bound to dump a lot of water so floods remain a clear and imminent danger.     The Yanks aren´t having much luck are they? Don´t they say that such unusual environmental conditions occur on a regular basis every few years? Or is is longer?

    well it´s Saturday morning, the entire family including MiL is up watching the hurricane news feeds on Sky, because idiot brother-in-law set out with his wife to leave too late and consequently couldn´t find any petrol or supplies so gave up and went back home. We can´t get hold of them by phone, mobile, or the interweb anymore. they live in an apartment block (3rd floor) in Atascosita, which is to the north-east of Houston (i think) so they should be quite safe - I´m just waiting for his fizzogg to appear on the telly *I done survive Hurricane Rita...* edit - pah, he´s fine, didn´t even get any windows blown in. his Mrs was well scared though. Q:- in a similar situation, natural or environmental disaster approaching, would <i>you </i> leave your home? I doubt I would, unless it was fairly certain that my home would be destroyed AND that I had an effective escape route.     My uncle is in Houston, we offered him a place up at my house in Dallas, but the traffic was too bad so they just went back and decided to ride it out. That was last night, and I haven´t watched the news yet, but my dad said it wasn´t all that bad in Houston, was it? What got hit hard?

    yeh, they´re fine. apartments got a bit bashed by stuff flying around, a few windows got put through, it just went on for ages and seemed like it was never going to end they said. and next day there was nothing in the shops.
