Face transplants

  • *throws up* that is disgusting, wrong, and just against the laws of nature. an organ from a dead person is one thing there typically not visable, but a face...

  •

A new face The recipient would have to take powerful anti-rejection drugs for life, which carry considerable long-term health risks, says the Royal College of Surgeons of England, which formed a working party to look at the issue earlier this year. Also, it is not known how well an individual and their loved ones would adapt psychologically to a completely new face. It is hard to predict what the person would look like after a face transplant.

<font face=´trebuchet ms, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica´ size=2> When a patient thinks it´s worth taking the risks involved, he/she will see it a last resort (it that the right expression?) I know that medication has to be FDA-approved but is that the same with surgeries? Can someone shed a light on that?

  • These days, it seems anything is posible, if you have the money. You can already get most organs, why not the face. Just hope the person had no criminal history, no enemys, and no wives , other wise it is stupid, even for badly burned victims. *Shakes head*

  • are you completely sure it´s wrong? i mean, maybe if the person´s face is perfectly fine. i think it should only be available to those who were in a fire, and they might have 3rd degree burns on their face. Those people´s lives are thrown out the window when that happens. they can´t go into public without being stared at, and soemtimes often wished they died in the fire...and they might as well have because of the life they are living.

  • There is a national security issue here, I´d say. Never mind just the morality of it which also is wrong but why make it easier for people who don´t want to be found to have such authentic disguise techniques?

  • I was thinking that too, that people could disappear by changing their face, like all things if it got routine enough, the procedure would go underground, and anyone could get it done for the right price... of course that doesnt change other forms of iding people, but i guess other than dna, fingerprints can be replaced, eyes at some point? like in minority report... ( I know its just a movie.. but eventually, maybe it will be possible...) eeek, this is all scary stuff... Like all things made for good, it can be warped for misuse... like good mr nobel´s dinamite

  • It´s not like they´re getting an exact copy of the face of someone else, they retain their bone structure and musculature. This surgery can help those whose faces are horribly disfigured. Your face isn´t just there to look pretty, it allows you to blink to keep your eyes moist, it allows you to use your lips to speak properly and to hold in saliva etc. On top of that it helps boost the self confidence of the victim. Even without the "evils of Western society" that Taw loves to harp on about, the general public will always react to seeing someone missing a nose walking the street. If the victim is willing to have such drastic surgery and is fully aware of the consequences and risks of rejection and a life of daily doses of anti-rejection pills, then I say let them do so.

  • I agree with recusant that it is not wrong with the proper restrictions. As for security risks to do the face transplant to look like someone else you would also need to reshape both the bone and muscle structure to mach that of the orginal donor. As a individual who has some skills in movie make-up I could easly make a mask that would fool anything but a medical exam, so old school fx makeup and masks would be far simpler and cheaper, not to mention safer then face transplant. From what I read of the artical it is still in the very early stages of research and the psychological impact may very well be the wall that stops this from reaching public use.

  • I don´t know. I can´t understand plastic surgery at all, why it´s such an obsession i don´t know. vanitas vanitorum omnia vanitas?

"for once, i`ll actually tell you what i was thinking; but maybe i won`t have anything to say.."

  • Guys, this isn´t some procedure for somebody who doesn´t like the shape of their cheeks or something! I´ll say it again: Your face does more than make you look pretty!

  • I´m so beautiful I could be a face transplant donor. people would fight over the chance to look like me.

"for once, i`ll actually tell you what i was thinking; but maybe i won`t have anything to say.."

  • Actually the article said the recipient wouldn´t look anything like the donor - simply due to facial bone structure. So basically it could be anyone´s ugly mug, and it may then look good/bad on someone else... However, I wonder how long before vanity for the "ultimate" facelift would ensure it became a common place proceedure. After all, new skin cells on a face, which haven´t seen UV light anywhere near the extent of a 50 yr old face would mean no wrinkles, crows feet, sagging skin... so there is hope for you yet, get on that list! Edited by - Mike G on 9/28/2005 5:52:34 AM
