Do we really need a language censor here?

  • i totally understand where everyone is comming from, but I believe Killa´s primary argument is for his fanfic. we´ve all acknowledged that this can be avioded, but in general banter, it is heard all the time, especially between characters like those in killa´s fic. I agree whole heartedly that the forums should be censored to this kind of language, but it does take away something from character development in the stories. yes, I know, us fanfic writters could write about someting else and avoid it entirely, but look at the universe the game is set in, it isnt exactly eden now is it? perhaps when/ if the forums are revamped there can be a fanfic forum like the veteran forum, because some stories developing on this site are simply amazing, and so are the authors. anyway, i dont know if my post is helping the cause anymore, so I´ll be quiet, but its just some food for thought Edited by - [GR_Fallen_Angel on 10/16/2005 7:20:33 PM

  • LOL, so you got in trouble with your preacher huh!? Look up Thomas Crapper and give him a history lesson, thats where the word crap comes from. Vulgarity is a cultures teachings wether right or wrong.

  •

absolutely my friend....unfortunately though, it doesn´t explain why the word c*nt still gets through the filter think it would be a good idea to add it, don´t you?

<font face=´trebuchet ms, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica´ size=2>For one simple reason I think, either Bargib forgot to add it, or it wasn´t on the list he got from ICRA, concerning the swearwords that needed to be blocked, in either case, i´d hae to agree with Grom here, and say that it should be added, as it is a very rude and offensive term, no matter in what context you use it. On Today´s other news: Blimey Tix, you sure know how to make an entrance, everything´s well i hope?? with You AND Marija ofcourse, school still busy??

  • I agree there should be a language censor. Simply because it forces people to use different words that aren´t rude. I delight in using as many long, complex and obscure words as possible. So should you lot Oh, and I love being a bore. Seriously, being able to express oneself articulately without the need for expletives is a useful skill to have. Once you leave school the shock to the system is that it is NOT COOL to punctuate every sentence with a choice four letter word. EDIT: Though perhaps we could exempt stories fanfics etc etc as they could be considered ´art´. Edited by - The Evil Thing on 10/17/2005 9:56:13 AM

You mean if the character is supposed to be a crusted up swear ridden salty dog that not being able to put *&^%! in the guys lines takes away from the character depiction? Why not just put the symbols in place of the words? Firstly, it serves the purpose, secondly, it puts it to the imagination of the reader what may have been said which, thirdly, gives the reader a more enriching experience in applying his/her imagination to what you wrote.

  • And fourthly, it makes it look incredably stupid and like I´m five years old. And Fallen Angel was right, my arguement about this is mainly for my story. If I can´t express what´s on their mind clearly, then it really takes away from character devolipment. And as Fallen Angel said, this isn´t set in Eden, it´s set in a grimy 32nd century in a place almost on the other side of the galaxy. Not to mention, with all the stuff that´s supposed to happen in this story, people will think that THIS is a judgment of God, the Tribulation, all that stuff and begin questioning their faith. I´ve seen it happen, people lose their faith because they´re wondering why a God that loved them so much would send them through Hell on Earth. This is mainly about my fanfic, as I want to be able to post it uncensored, and I would like to post it here to reach more people. I could creat another site but I suppose some people just don´t have the time to go there. I will make a site and try to post the chapters there, but I would like to be able to post them here too. And thank you Fallen Angel for seeing the point I´m trying to make, or at least seeing where I´m coming from.

__________________________ Okay, since someone who will remain nameless was offended by my last sentence, I`ve changed it. For those of you who just can`t wait, I`ve finally started a new fanfic, The Holocaust! __________________________ 4 8 15 16 23 42 Twenty bucks to whoever can tell me what the deal is with those numbers. I`ll give you a hint: They have somthing to do with a guy named Hurley. (Congrats to Taw, he was the first to get it right.)

  • I was reading some of Dan Browns (a little late I know...) books, and I don´t remember seeing that many swear words at all! I don´t think having them in would benefit the story either... Seeing as fanfic has had more steamy scenes than an episode of the "red shoe diaries" - I personally won´t be convinced that it´s honestly for "character development or authenticity purposes". Seeing a fan fic with swear words will not make me think "Oh, gritty..." at all. Thats just my personal opinion - but as others have said, it doesn´t matter anyways cause it aint being changed from the looks of things. As a fix up - write word or Acrobat documents (or even plain text documents) and then post links to them. Edited by - Mike G on 10/17/2005 1:55:44 PM

  • Yes we do need the filter! I swear!

  • yes but dan brown´s characters arnt exactly the same type of people we´re writing about. and yes some got a little steamy, but so do some episodes of star trek. Nothing written in the fan fic forum is worse than you´d see on TV on any given night. granted I think TV these days is rediculous, but if this stuff is found on TV, in music and movies, in Fine Art, I think it should be acceptible in writing to if it is used to help define a character. If any of you have seen movies like "Do the Right Thing" they are filled with swear words, yes some of it is overboard, but it is used to help define a character. Now if you´ve ever seen this movie on TV they replace words like mother ****** with mickey flicky, which completely ruins the point the director is trying to convey. I realize this second point detracts from one of my earlier ones, but it is still worth mentioning.

  • Killa . If you insist on the artistic necessity I can´t argue with that. ( Although I also would suggest that if it really is going to look all that stupid with @#$! then consider whether replacing them with the actual 4 letter word really makes the t

  • Killa, I think it rather makes you look more like an adult if you can find a way to stipulate your protagonist´s character, without resorting to common swearwords. I use swears at a day to day basis, but only to highlight certain points I have.

  • I find it interesting that someone said you can only truly express yourself if you *don´t* use swear words...I do agree, but hasten to add that if you are unbelievably annoyed with someone, to the point where you detest them, surely a much more effective way to to express this would be... "**** off you ****ing ****" rather than "please go away you detestable person". By using the second phrase you demonstrate your vocabulary, yet you fail to truly express yourself to the extent of the english language. Whereas the first method is a quick and legitimate expression of disgust. "Swear" words after all are only an extension of the english language - their definition in the oxford english is "To use abusive, violent, or blasphemous language against". Also, the word "swear" itself means "To say or affirm earnestly and with great conviction" which is exactly why it is directly linked to such "bad words" - if you want to be abusive with great conviction, then it surely is not only an acceptable method, but also the most effective, no? (and yes I totally understand why this ICRA labelled site has to be swear filtered - I just thought it was about time someone was honest enough to stand up for swearing!) Edited by - gromit on 10/18/2005 9:39:57 AM

  • I have read many books that have no swearing at all, and I am not just talking about DR. Suess! They usually say something like, "He muttered and oath", or "she said things that would make a sailor blush." You know, implied. I think that swearing comes from habit but when you write it out, whether in a forum or a paper or a story, it is for the shock value. Use of those words really limit ones vocabulary. Look at "Die Hard" or othrs like it where the majority of the dialog is bleeped or voiced over when shown edited. In short, I think that the censor should stay and be edited to include previously mentioned words.

Ahh... marriage. Love it!!! Just now a year and I look forward to those to come.

  • One works with the limitations required is my suggestion. If it is absolutely impossible for the author to get the intended point across without using swears in a written work, it is absolutely impossible for that author. Point would be whether the site is obliged to change its rules for the benefit of the author. My guess is that do so is more like a tail wagging the dog situation.
