I play both PC games (in the earlier days I played much with Atari´s and the Commodore 64 and MSX) and console games. I used to have a Playstation (and the Nintendo 8 bit and SNES even before that), but then I had to decide on whether to go for the Xbox or PS2. After a while of comparisons between hardware and available games for each console, I decided to go with the Xbox. I´ve enjoyed it very much (still do) and also still enjoy PC games. But now I want to go for the next generation console. I´m leaning more towards the Xbox 360 than I do to the PS3 at the moment. I mean, many sites are claiming the PS3 is the absolute winner of the two, solely based on hardware specs, but more respectable websites aren´t so sure it´s a clear verdict. But what many people are forgetting is that it´s not all about hardware... it´s about the games and what they can get out of the hardware. If I have to believe half the stories I read about developers having a hard time crafting their games for the PS3 and it´s much more easy for the Xbox 360, that clearly has to say something. However, I also know you have to take many of those articles with a grain of salt. I just don´t know, I guess I lean more towards the Xbox 360 because they have actually shown in-game footage and screenshots right from the beginning, where I haven´t seen much of in-game footage of the PS3 yet. And besides, I don´t like the fact Sony is constantly postponing showing in-game footage. They said they would show in-game footage at TGS 2005 (Tokyo Game Show), but at the last minute they decided not to do it and came with a lame excuse for it. And they even lied about the upcoming game Killzone, where they showed a vid and said it was in-game and real time, but eventually (after many sites claimed it was fake) they admitted it was pre-rendered. Sony did the same thing when they announced the PS2 and talked about the ´´Emotion Engine" and accompanied a nice vid with that. Everyone was all "Ooooh" and "Aaaah", but NEVER did any of the games on PS2 looked anything near that good. And then there´s also the online part of the new consoles. I haven´t seen or heard much about PS3´s online capabilities in comparison to the already very established Xbox Live. I mean, I can understand it´s all marketing and Microsoft is also doing it´s fair share of making things appear better than they often are, but at least with the Xbox 360 they are showing more in-game footage and ´real´ screenshots, so you have a better feel of what the machine can really do. Sony just seems to throw out as much CGI as possible. Just my 2 cents
What are you buying in next Gen?

-
I think Sony promised the PS2 every Christmas for about 4 or 5 years didn´t they? and as you say, all we got was nice vids, nothing else.
-
Sony did get stabbed in the back by nintendo over the original Playstation though, i have no idea what it has to do with it, but it shows that even with major setbacks they put out a brilliant product that won over time. I just hope that Sony stays in the console business for the sole reason of variety, rather than another *gasp* MS based monopoly over the gaming system. -:- You Wanna Revolution?
-
If I do get one, it´ll probably be the Revolution, if only because I´m an unwavering supporter of Nintendo, and encouraging creativity in gaming is a good thing. That said, it´s equally likely I´ll just stick with the ol´ PC, and just use the ´cube and N64

VII online would suck horribly. Everyone would be named some variation of Cloud using alphanumeric characters.
-
Not sure which one i´ll get ATM, prolly cause i know very little of the next gen console. I´ll prolly go with Revolution (that controller looks brilliant lol ) although i´m tempted by a 360. If i had the cash, i´d get all 3 (or a better PC ) Before ANYBODY asks.... I had my username BEFORE the game even existed. Thank you.

I think that Microsoft is releasing Xbox 360 too soon...There´s no reason to buy it, outside of fully customizable soundtracks (which are a hassle as the CD drive is soooooo slow) few games have shown us anything that would require new technology. But of course, Bungie and Microsoft are releasing Halo 3 on the 360 only, a clever ploy to get the 360 to sell more...I´m perfectly content with running over to a nearby buddy´s house to play Halo 3 (which doesn´t come out for till about 4 months after the 360´s release I believe). I won´t buy any, but my heart lies with Sony, they haven´t disappointed me thusfar in console gaming, and they constantly have the best Role playing games. Xbox has better multiplayer (largely due to the 4 controller slots compared to PS2´s 2 slots without a multitap) but it´s not enough to win my opinion. I say Sony over Nintendo and Microsoft. But I personally am content with old inexpensive consoles *Cough* Genesis, Dreamcast, PSX *cough* Edited by - parabolix on 10/9/2005 4:38:39 PM

eraser, having much the same kind of gaming background before making your final choice, bare this inmind, the ps3 will be backwards compatable, which means stacks of stuff out there, the new xbox 360 will be backward compatable if you send off your old software for recompiling, (acording to some gadget show on tv) obviously the stuff in the shops would also be recompiled. (gawd knows whos gunna foot the bill for this) so unless you send your old stuff in, it wont work on the new system. if i´m wrong dont shoot me down, tis just what i heard on the/a gadget show, personaly i will stick to the pc, i only upgrade the bits rather than the whole system as with consoles. hmm, anyone know anything about clusters? http://www.kokrull.com home of ** uk server ** Edited by - git on 10/9/2005 7:13:47 PM

I´ll stick with my PC. I have the PS1 wich is now more of a cd player then anything else ( I still play many of the games I have for it) as well as a PS2 wich I play more dvds onit then games. with me I love the fact that PC games are more changable then console games. I just never know when to leave something the way it is lol.

modding for consoles aint so easy either.

I think it´s a little too early to make a deffinate desision. However, as of right now I´m leaning toward the PS3 because of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, even though it´s not comming out for another year. __________________________ Okay, since someone who will remain nameless was offended by my last sentence, I´ve changed it. I read today that Nintendo are really struggling. I wonder if the Revolution will be make or break for them, like the Dreamcast was for Sega, or the Jaguar was for Atari?
-
I read that about Nintendo too. If Revolution is intended to be a "third way" divergent from the Sony/MS Wars, they ought also to have developed their own Gameboy answer to PSP, I think. Their philosophy on game content is more "wholesome" generally speaking so they should think about marketing to the smaller crowd who should not be made to have to sit still in front of a tv/console setup. (Yes. I´ve been researching alternatives for the Munchkin so as not to be caught off guard). They (smaller kids) should be able to take along, drop it, pick it up, drop it again, whatever. A cheaper, more rugged and highly portable Gameboy that runs on both regular and rechargeable batteries. Edited by - indy11 on 10/10/2005 1:59:06 PM

they did, Edward, it´s the Nintendo DS. there´s this new game the kids are raving about (and for) - Nintendogz, it´s called. I don´t really know what it is or does, but apparently I´ve ordered one from Japan via credit card. apparently I wouldn´t mind, I´d have bought it anyway ffs. oo only a few years and my predicament will be yours there´s some blessings in life after all.

Ah hmmmm... *goes back to googling video game consoles*

X-3 will be coming out in the new year! (well, somewhere). However, when they release a new gen of anything there isn´t really anything that will benefit from it at the start - graphics etc. Why? Because its business sense - you don´t make a game specifically in atticipation of a games console being released a year later, because it just won´t shift copies! There needs to be a market to cater to first, and the consoles owners are the "market". There is no point making a Xbox360 only game to release now, before its released, which cannot run on the XBox - as your sales will be minimal. As for release time, just before Xmas is perfect - all that "Mommy..." Xmas buying, you wouldn´t get that if you release at April and thats for sure. It may top the Xmas "must have" list for many. The consoles will shift, that is undeniable - they will get bought if for no other reason than having the latest verion of the console. I would imagine that for the first year you will get games that can be played on both the Xbox and X360 (or at least until a significant number of consoles are sold), otherwise they are going to be targeting a small audience. Best to make it work on both, that way you maximise sales (as in if you could select detail levels a la PC gfx cards). If halo3 is going to be X360 only, then I think that shows the power of that game. They know the game itself will sell consoles... talk about confidence! For me, not buying any games consoles again. I don´t care if they play movies, if they make the tea - and if they allow me to chat online whilst gaming. My PC does all that and more! (well, apart from the tea - its a US processor, so it makes coffee instead).

That "Nintendogs" game (or whatever it is) reminds me of those "Tamagochis", or whatever the hell they were called. I hated those damn things. People kept trying to sell them to me (second-hand usually), and then all of the cheap knock-offs came out which only made things worse.
